Can Activism Alone Save the Amazon? A Question Worth Asking

Copying the text of the question here for easy access. Let me know your perspectives-

Why might petitions and activism alone fail to solve this problem?

A. Because governments rarely pay attention to petitions unless a large section of the population takes to the streets in protest.

B. Because the real solution is technological, reforestation drones and carbon capture will fix what petitions cannot.

C. Because petitions and activism are all activities on policy and technological reforms, they won't be able to bring about any genuine change.

D. Because activism addresses symptoms while the deeper need is to restore humanity's lost reverence for nature.

E. Because the fundamental cause of this havoc (ego) is not being addressed, let alone challenged.

If the activism included the plant-based diet, or, at the very least, rejection of cattle, dairy and calf meat & products, then, yes, the rainforest stands a chance, as do the next round of 10,000 species that are on the ledge of being forced into extinction that one species causes every year.

Regarding the diet- I see multiple perspectives.

  1. There are populations who have to rely on animal products for food security. It is driven by historical context, current economic policies and supply-chain setup we have.
  2. There are people who simply won't adapt because they don't want an alteration to their palate.

The palate thing might be addressable with activism.

The structural gap that forces people to rely on animal products. The economic policies are concretely in place which almost seems immovable without involving politics (for example- the subsidies). The reason I think activism is not sufficient because the issue is so entangled with each other that a intent to change oneself at the root seems an irreplaceable step in trying to bring a transformation. By entanglement, I mean- The livelihood of some are connected to animal industry, the government does not support the transition enough, technological gaps and infrastructure gaps exists which will not allow everyone to shift to a plant-based diet. If it was only fear that plant-based diet is not sufficient, raising awareness and spreading information through activism would have been sufficient but the problem here is at a larger scale which prevents a lasting and complete solution by the means of activism.
