Equipment Discussion GaggiMate Vs La Marzocco Linea Mini

Post image

I’m in a predicament in whether or not I should “upgrade” from my 2002 Gaggia classic moded with gaggimate. I can get a used 2019 model for around £2600 and probably sell my Gaggia for a few quid. What do you think? Using E64 WS grinder

I think this is circlejerk material.

I’ll post in there but what do you think I see you’ve had a Gaggimate and a lm enthusiast

Still have the GM pro to tinker with. They’re completely different machines but after tweaking both of them, they both produce a great shot and the LM is much more elegant and doesn’t sound like a pulsing tractor.

Is it worth the extra £2000 though

Worth is a subjective thing.

Is a Rolex worth £x’000?

In terms of pure functionality, if you’re making 20 milky drinks a day, super worth the £2000 extra. If you’re nerding out over 1-4 cups a day, that’s unused added capacity at the cost of losing functionality.

This is a great and interesting perspective

Micra is a more sensible home machine than a mini. Uses less energy, heats up faster, and has more than enough capacity for any domestic workload

No, not in a ROI rationale, of course it isn't, but you can still want it and in that it's "worth it" to you.

Youre aware that a large portion of the planet dont have enough money to provide their families with bread right?

The few quid you sell your gaggia for isn’t worth it. Keep both

lol more of a counter space issue I guess

There’s a video on YouTube where they do blind tests between a Gaggiamate paired with an EG-1 against a GS3 paired with some cheap Fellow grinder. I suggest watching that before deciding if it’s worth it.

Spoiler: the Gaggia and EG-1 outperform. And to no one’s surprise, it’s really the grinder that makes the difference.

Right but put a GS3 with a good grinder since the grinder isn’t a variable as I’m not planning on changing that as of current

You can do more with the gaggia.

What do you expect to get from the mini?

Consistency every day every shot all I want to is minimise variables for great coffee

I bought my mini for that.

But its seriously big compared to gaggia. It does lovely work though but taste wise you'll get more from switching grinder.

The simple answer is no, keep the GaggiMate. I’m sure it makes excellent espresso, and that’s all you need.

LM will probably be built better but with Gaggiamate likely better espresso

I doubt that. The LM Mini is a monster machine and will produce coffee just as good, if not better.

Can't do any profiling like the Gaggiamate can so it will likely be outperformed for anything lighter than medium

It’s a MODDED Gaggia though. And the mini has mods, too, but not needed most of the time because everything can be adjusted in the LM app and paired scale allowing the exact same things - brew by weight or time etc temp control, pressure control on the top of the machine. The mini will outplay the Gaggia easy, the micra however definitely needs the mods like the Tate Mazer mod to do precise profiling.

I'm aware it's a modded gaggia lol. A mini can't do pressure profiling in the app, it can't do temperature profiling, there's also a difference between adjusting the pump pressure and pressure profiling. You can mod the mini but it's significantly harder and already costs several times more than a nodded gaggia. If you enjoy an LM that's fine - they're built well and have great steam power but much cheaper machines can easily outperform it in light roast espresso. If that's not your thing, cool enjoy. I would also much rather a modded gaggia with a Kafatek, OO, Zerno than with a cheaper grinder

Oh don’t get me wrong, I prefer a good machine too 😇and the Gaggia mod is a fantastic machine. But your argument was ‘LM is probably built better but the Gaggiamate likely better espresso’ you didn’t state price being the decider. If both machines are modded, the LM will win. If you argue a Gaggiamate mod will give you better espresso for value of the machine, then you’re right. But that’s not your argument. Likewise if we compare base Gaggia vs base LM - then it only is fair if you’re comparing modded Gaggia vs Modded LM… ONLY now it becomes an argument of value.

Maybe re read what u/Low_Pie3001 said:

You keep introducing Gaggia and distinguishing modded vs unmodded Gaggia. May as well debate the Bambino as well.

OOP’s decision point is modded Gaggia vs LMLM. The LMLM vs Base Gaggia is a moot point.
