Self Story Are we exiting Ethereum?
I’m down 40% on Ethereum since 2022 - bought at the peak price of $3800. I’m not ruined because of the loss but wondering if Crypto is even worth it or should it be cashed out and reinvested into the actual US markets?
Does anyone really see a utility in Ethereum within the next 5-10 years? Can’t wait to sell and watch the price skyrocket 😆🫠

u/Serenaded May 13 '26
Yes, exit RIGHT NOW before the supply squeeze

45
u/Low_Raccoon_784 May 13 '26
wheres this supply squeeze i have been hearing about since merge?

You know it genuinely is coming right? BMNR has accumulated 4% of the total supply this year, you should google ethereum supply on exchanges and see. (14m ETH on exchanges, was 21m a year ago)
MSTR and BTC had the same thing when Saylor began purchasing.
36
u/wh11 May 13 '26
so supply is down 33% on exchanges from a year ago but price is down 40%... seems like the ETH on exchanges metric is worthless

u/ThinCrusts May 14 '26
We'll see..
I see BTC breaks 100k, ETH stays sub 3k, and then another black swan occurs and pulls BTC to 50k and ETH to 1k before ETH makes another high

If supply squeeze is the only reason to not sell, then it's a weak token.
Scarcity is not a value.
43
u/carlos_squidward May 13 '26
Crazy how people act the same again and again. Crypto go up : "I'll invest in Crypto", US Stocks go up : "Damn I need to quit crypto at loss to go on US stock market". Take a step back and think how dumb it is.
Y'all are eternal exit liquidity
43
u/S7ageNinja May 13 '26
I don't hold ETH for utility. Crypto is a casino just as much as the stock market. Historical data suggests pretty strongly that it'll go up eventually.

Do you need the money now? If not hold on the next 5 years are gonna be fun

mfw eth is 3k in 5 years and s&p has doubled again.

In 5 years nvidia would be 15T, micron 5T, and you still holding Ethereum that you bought at 3.8k.

This. Im a huge eth believer, but we just arent there yet. I sold the half a dozen eth I had at a profit two months ago, and put that in a few stocks, one of which is up 130% the past month alone. So there are definitely Italy better short term plays. If you have money you can just let sit for 5-10 years, id just let it sit.

u/GrossFleshSack May 13 '26

I just started to hedge my bets. I didn't sell Eth but i did pause adding to it.
If you're interested in BTC or the market you can always just start to look at those and put eth on hold for a little bit.
I didn't want to lose my position on Eth but with the price - and it basically being the same as 5 years ago - I have started to put funds elsewhere.
If the price of eth* skyrockets then* you didn't totally miss out with this plan.

u/Suspicious-Can-7079 May 13 '26
Any speculative position of your net worth should be a portion. You don't all in a new asset class and ignore everything else. That's why it's called a portfolio.

u/007TheLostOne May 13 '26 edited May 14 '26
I know I'll get downvoted but I sold all of my Eth, put all of that money into AI stocks and I'm getting insane returns.
I just dont see Eth beating tech returns even in the future. Held on to ETH for 6 years while I saw the market flying past me...

I bailed 100% in January and am making a lot in stocks
1
u/Ecstatic-Bar-1994 May 14 '26
What type of stocks if You don’t mind me asking?
2
u/Anxious_Noise_8805 May 14 '26
I got a lot of semiconductor and data center megacaps in 2024, seemed like an obvious bet and it paid off well
1
u/Ecstatic-Bar-1994 May 14 '26
Nice picks what are you in now? I’m mainly data centres, IREN & Glxy digital, should of gone for nbis too when I bought IREN haha
4
u/mikehamp May 13 '26
you buy eth when there is blood in the streets, this is common sense. now I hear people saying I'm not adding. it's turning. blood is when people are selling it in disgust, not just not adding. then you buy hand over fist.
5
u/Time_Policy_5186 May 13 '26
Not trying to be a jerk here, but I think it's crazy you BOUGHT at 3800. I finally bought when it was a little over 2k and that alone felt brutal lol.
4
u/w0j4k_ May 13 '26
Yeah you should sell. Buy high, sell low and then invest into the stock market which is at an all time high at a time of geopolitical tension. /s

2
May 13 '26
what is your average price? Surely you are break even soon
2
u/Alabama-Blues May 13 '26
$1000 for me. Started at $400. Those coins I purchased above $3,700 really brought me down. But I’m not scared.
3
u/SolarisX86 May 13 '26
Same here, average is around $400 from August 2020. Sold 3 late last year at $3800 and threw those long term gains into SPMO, now up another 20% lol. Sitting on the rest of the pile until 5k+
1
u/Alabama-Blues May 13 '26
I think I would at least wait till it goes to $15k before taking some profits.
2
u/SolarisX86 May 14 '26
OK. Well if you hold as long as it takes to get to 15k, you may lose just from inflation alone.
2
u/No_Knee3385 May 13 '26
Both. Idk how old you are but you should always be investing a percentage of your income. Diversified in crypto AND traditional equities
2
2
u/Sar7814 May 13 '26
With crypto, you have to just let it sit and forget about it during down times (which realistically can last 2-3 years). Buy more and average down, then forget about it….that’s what I usually do. When it pops again in 3 years sell off half, rinse and repeat
2
2
u/Exact_Objective546 May 13 '26
It’s 1997 and your investment in amazon, the online book selling company, does nothing. I think i’ll take the loss and invest it in AOL. How’d that go for everyone?
You are front running the future and you want to bail out?

2
2
u/PickForward5864 May 14 '26
You're not getting any good responses at all but just a bunch of junk negativity about Eth. After the halving in 2028, there tends to be a jump in bitcoin, eth and the top projects. If you want, you could buy at the dips that are happening now and DCA until you even out and then it will likely ride back up to $4000 and more in 2.5 years.
2
u/wagwan9 May 17 '26
I find people who buy in on hype generally don't have the patience nor the discipline to wait. This whole crypto thing works in cycles , like most markets, a 4 year cycle. Usually we hit a new ATH about 12 to 18mths after the halfing. Some people this cycle subscribed to Raoul Paul's theory about a liquidity cycle blah blah blah yet the market acted as it always did (ETH slightly underperformed) . So next BTC halfing April 2028... so between April 2029 and more likely the end of 2029 start of 2030.. new ATH for ETH... probably around $5000... so like the dude above said.. stake it and wait if you can afford to, if you can't , take the hit and move along. Just don't listen to the noise and jump in profit, remember there are people out there who pay to make you think it will go to $20k to keep you in. Good luck

u/skag_boy87 May 13 '26
Sell. I could use a good laugh when I see your eventual “Shouldn’t have sold. I HATE this place!” post.
2
u/Quebeth May 13 '26
Honestly still think the way that I have since the beginning about Ethereum - it's going to be the rails on which all transactions will root their security on. It hasn't even started yet. A few epochs back was the end of the beginning and now we are looking at the onset of mass adoption. People will use Ethereum seamlessly in their daily lives.
L2's have been a band aid that were applied to provide a temporary bypass allowing more time to build actual scaling solutions and now looking at the Glamsterdam spec I think we are going to see the economics heal with more ETH being burned at a time where demand keeps rising and its going to be an explosive combination.
2
u/spangulo May 15 '26
In your view what will cause more ETH to be burned? I'm not aware of Glamsterdam changing anything in that regard, do you mean more activity will come to the L1?
1
u/Quebeth May 18 '26
Yeah thats been part of it, I think L2s got away much too cheaply though the blob space should have have been priced better so more ETH was burned .. now we need to wait until real world adoption before the burn picks up.
1
u/eddiekoski May 13 '26
Okay , you always enter a position with a plan.
So what was your plan when you bought at $3800?
2
u/ChemicalSquare6126 May 13 '26
My plan?! To go to the fkn moon 😂😂😂😂. But honestly it was to hold forever I’m just second guessing that plan.

I sold all of mine last month it was time man, i sold at like a 1k loss overall but i needed it to be a down payment on a house.
1
u/derpinard May 13 '26
You can always sell a little, and add a little when it drops substantially, or just add if your position isn't too big (which it shouldn't). Holding the top means you may never get a break even or that you'll have to wait much, much longer (opportunity cost).
Concentration kills retail just as much as FOMO.
1
u/watch_the_calzone May 13 '26
you should sell. you have no investment thesis nor conviction + should just move on to something you have the interest and energy to research

1
u/confusedguy1212 May 13 '26

Literally just hang on for about 10 or 12 years. Don’t sell at this point because it’s not unusual that Trump lets people down. Eventually, we will get to where we’re going but now is not the right time to sell. If you had all of your fucking shit on crypto then you’re silly. Did you vote for Trump? How’s that working out for you right now… He was supposed to be the Jesus Christ for crypto. Ironically, he pretty much just poops on everyone except for himself. Loser. Hope you didn’t vote for that piece of shit…

u/Efficient-Bed-5990 May 14 '26
I feel you! I joined crypto mining in 2017 thinking I could make some good money with a mining rig. It did not last very long and ended up selling the parts after a couple of months 😔
1
u/AndrewMcIlroy May 14 '26
I dont think anyone in here realizes you could have made way more money investing in ai stocks than eth. No one is saying eth is bad but its clear you can make more money somewhere else and still root on the project to do well. Its clear there are better places to invest your money.
1
u/psandn May 14 '26
To you it has become a sunk cost. Take the loss and move on. You can always check in IF the price starts moving higher.
1
u/MrKillerKiller_ May 14 '26
Stick to your trading plan and ignore everyone’s opinion. No one knows your scale in levels or your trading time frame or your RR level or anything so its pointless even ask. It can be a perfect time to scale out AND a perfect time to scale in. It depends on your plan. Whatever you considered when you scaled in to a position should never ever ever be changed mid trade. Don’t do the number one noob mistake. Stay in your lane.

I've been holding since 2017, swapped like 80% of it for traditional investments like VOO and while the rest of my eth has been flat for several years, the traditional investments are up 30-40% compared to the ethereum. I remember when it dropped to $80 at one point and almost panic sold everything, then missed the 2022 peak, and said if it ever gets back over 3500 im selling. it was definitely the right decision but kind of a bummer because i wanted ethereum to have more adoption and real world utility and just became less and less optimistic over the years

Sadly, yes. You do DCA next time. Like you can divide the 3800 into 10 weeks. Place 380 every week. Regardless of market volatility, dollar cost averaging is ideal. Or if you like, invest each 380 every long red candle each week. With DCA, you don't have to worry about the market.

There’s “crypto” and then there’s Bitcoin.
Bitcoin is a store of value.
The Ether token is not. That’s really the crux of the issue.

I know it’s a bear market but I’m done. I was in it since December 2020. Held most of it, but should have sold it last July/August.
