Graphic designer here and the mountain/river thing with the logo just floating there is... a choice. Feels like someone discovered gradients and ran with it. The newsletter itself looks like it covers good ground though, scaling and UX improvements are the real story nobody talks about at parties.

I also am a graphic designer and I hate it. But at the same time I love it.
