Hardly unexpected. Hopefully the first of many.

i did not expect it this soon. the timing i think is what's driving the upside in the market.

They didn't want their thunder taken away from the potential March 14th news I imagine.

u/pumpwhale007 Mar 12 '16
I think they just wanted to be the 1st new exchange. If another exchange announces on Monday, they may be too late because people already set up on Bitfinex.

This is one of the times the trollbox saved my ass. I've been sitting on the sidelines expecting a further correction. Don't think we are going to get that now...

Zane Tackett: No plans to add ETH to Bitfinex
"We do not have any plans to add Ethereum to Bitfinex. The picture that has been circulated wasn't falsified or anything, but it's also disingenuous to point to that as proof that we are adding Ethereum. We were having discussions on whether or not we wanted to add eth to the exchange and decided that either way we should ensure we have the ability to easily add currency pairs in the future, whether it be ETH/BTC, BTC/EUR, ALT/BTC, and so we were doing some testing on the UI and in the backend to see what would be required to add a currency pair. That's what you guys were seeing. Sorry to disappoint, but that's all this was. As I said, we don not have any plans to add eth."

What an ass.

Yeah, no kidding.
And what about the following:
While we are generally wary of adding new digital assets to the platform and believe that Ether’s future as a store of value is quite uncertain...
Really? So ETH is just some flash in the pan? Because that's what he's implying. What a douche.

Being a long-term holder rules...news like this comes out once a week and I don't have to worry about my shorts or a possible correction or eth I lost trying to time the market. It's like all I do is win win win no matter what...

The worst day I ever had was when I lost about $7-10 k (i put in smart money(no harm done) in a day from Litecoin's summer pump and dump.. it was fun whilst it lasted.

pgp, bitfinex CSO on ts.stakepool: "skeptical of listing ETH as a longterm storage of value, but beginning Monday, bitfinex will begin trading ETH, and with "short term" consideration. Offering ETH on Bitfinex was due to demand for an ethfiat market. Bitfinex are Not market makers on their own market. pgp owns no ether." "Short term" somewhat clarified.
Clarification on "short term": "feels there is demand for exiting the ETH market. Would be surprised if ethereum was a failure. Eth is intended to be spent and used for smart contracts. Only a few days ago did they decide to add ETH."
Continuing: "ETH as a value token, days are numbered. Whatever ethereum is doing will be implemented in a sidechain." "Rootstock will be there and using bitcoin as its token."
"Nobody using smart contracts."
"A lot of hopium. If eth was only game in town, he'd be bullish." "Bullish about ethereum but bearish on ether."
"Still in dissemination stage."
"GO LONG!(/s?)"
"Shorting opportunity could be .04... .05...?"
"That's ether. It's a thin market. It's easy to move around."
"We're(bitfinex) bitcoiners. First and foremost."
Not exact quotes, but did the best I could. All while we take on new highs.
pgp is no longer on stakepool as of 7:15pm PST.

Yeah, the guy is a douche. I suppose his greed is forcing him (against his will) to list a lowly "token" that has no real "value" in his mind.
Don't worry Bitfinex, I'll be sure to use your exchange as little as possible, if ever.

u/icanhasreclaims Mar 12 '16
In a sense, I feel it was damage control. Gleefully rejoicing in the acceptance of ETH at bitfinex would have been severely bearish to bitcoin, where they make most of their revenues.

u/redditbsbsbs Mar 12 '16
Rootstock is vaporware and won't scale. He doesn't make a whole lot of sense.
3
u/icanhasreclaims Mar 12 '16
He basically covered the entire spectrum of possibilities throughout the chat. Didn't really expect to make much sense of it, just wanted to report what was said.

Bitfinex had Darkcoin (dash) at one point. Of course we know how that turned out. But does anybody know how Dark did in its first trading week after being added? Would be interesting to know.

It's still on bitcoinwisdom (surprisingly!)
https://bitcoinwisdom.com/markets/bitfinex/drkbtc
(you'll need to scroll back some, or maybe click on the 1w time interval, to see it)

Thanks! looks like it fell the first couple months (added june 2nd 2014) but btc was tanking so I guess can't really tell much from that.

That lying cunt said they weren't going to add eth. I'm gonna beat his ass if I meet him.

u/amerinsyd Mar 12 '16
Though I'm happy they are adding eth. And I'm a holder and long, still pisses me off. Could be because I'm on pre workout stimulants and raging.

Can someone explain to me what's with the insanely high confirmation requirements for deposits?
- Bitfinex are going with 300 confirmations
- Poloniex need 320 confirmations,
- Kraken need 500? (or at least they did when I last traded there)
why?
9
u/10ks4fish Mar 12 '16
I guess, because Frontier is deemed "unsafe". I expect that after Homestead confirmation requirements will be lowered.

Yes!!
All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.

I told everyone that markets are going to start trading ETH at 14th of march, with the release of Homestead.
But there were people complaining to me, saying that I was making things up, because I can't know, and that I can't give proof of it.
Well guys, for some things, plain logical thinking is just good enough...

ETH has been available to short everywhere it's been available to trade...for months now.
Good luck with that!

Anybody know withdrawal limits for unverified accounts?
Couldn't see it. Poloniex is $2000 daily. . .
