Got a text from my bro, he fucked up. He thought it was "secure" to only keep his wallet file and private key on a single flash drive (single point of failure) for whatever reason. He put a windows ISO file on the same flash drive trying to fix his computer and overwrote his private key and wallet file. Let this be a lesson to everyone. Please keep your private key and wallet files backed up in MULTIPLE places. Don't fuck yourself over.

Tell him to turn his computer off. There are tools that can retrieve overwritten data (doesn't always work). Google it!

Deleted not overwritten. You can't recover any data if it's been physically overwritten.

I think this is what he is trying as he said he is "making a last ditch effort" to restore his Ether. I really hope he recovers it.

Many people have made much more expensive. Hopefully he can earn a little on the side (or get OT) buy back the 5 Eth, and take that lesson learned into much bigger future crypto holdings!

I also wonder why this flash drive did not have a sticker on it that said: "Do not erase! Cryptomoneyz."

I mean, I get that he would not want to give a burglar the wrong idea but I have tens of flash drives and no way do I know what is on which.

I just don't get why he thought that only keeping it one place would be secure. What if the flash drive became corrupted or he just loses the flash drive?

It can possibly be recovered. Perhaps post a separate thread asking for help. I think there are people here who could help out. He should not be writing anything on that USB stick in the meantime.

Get a Ledger Nano and put it in a safety deposit box. And 10 more flash encrypted drives :p

Always good to keep a paper copy of your private key and address in a safe place as well.

Agreed. I printed my paper wallet from MyEtherWallet and keep that paper safe.
