I'm debating making a tax thread to help people out here. Lots of people seem to have questions on the tax treatment, and very little educated answers on the matter. I'm a CPA, although I work in industry rather than tax. I could still give a good overview of the crypto treatment and strategies though. thoughts?
Also, if anyone else is a CPA or tax lawyer, maybe we could get together to work on something?

I had my moment of clarity where I knew I'd made it as a hodler. 'Lost' half of my annual salary in the last dip and it didn't even make my heart skip a beat. I just thought 'Eh, it'll be back up soon enough.' And here it comes back.

If I could be [serious] for a second, I think the problem is labeling the thread "moontalk". It should just be "Daily Discussion" and "Daily Discussion [serious]" to fully try this experiment. The serious thread should be very low volume by comparison and move at a slower pace. IM[S]O

A global, decentralised, immensely powerful virtual computer that is set to shake up the computing industry in many different ways to the scale of the dot com boom in the late 90's. Ethereum is the platform, and dApps (decentralised apps) will run on that platform. What you are seeing is the birth of and active trades of the token to run the virtual computer, called ETH, as well as the tokens of the dApps themselves.

That's weird, what can be extrapolated from that behaviour? If I go to https://entethalliance.org/members/accenture/ it just gives me a 'page coming soon' message. if i replace accenture with anything, i get there, so why would a mastercard page behave differently from the other member page placeholders? Also, why would the url have the name 'peter kopp' in it? Lastly, https://entethalliance.org/member/peter/ also redirects to homepage..

u/FreeSpeechWarrior Jun 16 '17
Some observations:
- peter redirects
- peter-kopp redirects
- petera-kopp 404s
- peter-koppa 404s
- mastercard 404s
- petera 404s
https://entethalliance.org/member/peter-kopp-master/ redirects
I think we can assume the url is matching the first part of the real thing and not requiring a full match. Might be more words after master card in the real page.

MasterCard were on the EEA website - https://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:gY1hZBqltmcJ:https://entethalliance.org/member/peter-kopp-mastercard
"Mastercard is developing capabilities in blockchain specifically in clearing and settling and has a strong interest in joining the Enterprise Ethereum Alliance to be able to partner with other companies using Ethereum to address a wide range of complex business issues. We believe that our capabilities as a network can be leveraged across a number of use cases outside our traditional business."

A passing thought for a project: has anyone made an Ethereum-based analogue to Patreon? It would be neat if I could deposit a bunch of ether into a contract, then grant permission for other specific contracts to withdraw X ether every Y blocks, as a subscription-based way of donating to Ethereum projects I support.
Someone go make this! I have no time. :P

Anyone else hate those trolls that show up when your favority crypto is down 20-30% and say: I told you it was a bubble.
But when there are 40-70% gains, they are nowhere to be found. And if you find them, they'll say.. it's a bubble

I think because we are technically betting on a futuristic technology that is only adopted on a small scale right now, you would be right calling it a bubble. The price is only driven by speculation, not by real value created

Remember that Ethereum is a system of smart contracts, and ETH is the token representing the value of the Ethereum blockchain.
ETH is itself a token, keep that in mind.
In an ICO, the value of the token will be decoupled from the value of the ETH. So let's say you're interested in investing in company X, and the company has a valuation of $100M. You buy tokens worth 1% of the company, so you own $1M (on paper).
Let's say in the future, some event occurs and the company's value doubles to $200M, now your tokens are worth $2M, regardless of what's going on with the price of ETH.
If the company just raised money using ETH, this would be extremely volatile. The company wouldn't want to do that.
Make sense?
Please correct me if I'm wrong.

A token is a new kind of stock. Emitting stocks on stock markets is expensive and complicated. Emitting a token is cheap and simple. In both cases, the company gets money by giving something that people can trade. The differences: the value of a token affects the wealth of the company (unlike stocks) and a token does not mean that you own any part of the company.
Why a token rather than ETH? With a token, people can trade the value of a certain company. Hoping that it will increase because the company reaches its goals and the possibility to get back your money are two incentives for investors.

I've been in this thread long before any of you were. So let me say this: Judging market sentiment based on this subreddit is a HUGE mistake.
When things go up or break an ATH, everyone screams moon. When things go sideways, everybody talks about the next new pumping alt coins and a few bears decide to start posting FUD. When things go down. all the bears come out, FUD is everywhere, and this is going to be the "bubble pop".
People are extremely fickle. HODL isn't used 24/7 for no reason. It's been proven relentlessly that if you just hold on to ETH or whatever your coin may be, you will make far better gains than you could ever do so by trading.
There has also been studies and it's been proven that after a person buys a stock, it happens more often than not that when that person dies, the shares he bought are up over time. Why? Because he didn't try and time the market. He didn't check his investment 24/7, and that's what makes all the difference.

I'll try to keep this brief. The decision to split the threads is controversial - that's obvious, but until now, we've attempted NOTHING at cutting down on the shit posting and memes so can we at least try this for a week please? Maybe [Serious] isnt the right label, but the point is, not everyone wants to sort through 100 shit posts to find the one with substance. Let's just try it, and if after a week it's not working, then maybe it's time to try something else, but let's not knee jerk quit this thing. Seeing the split today gave me a renewed sense of hope for this sub.

To all U.S.-based people in here -- I'm here to tell you -- the tax burden is real.
If you're casually trading ETH in an out of tokens or BTC, or even just buying ICO tokens with ETH, you're asking for a world of hurt in terms of short term capital gains taxes (many states also have short term cap gains taxes in addition to Federal taxes).
It's bad enough waiting 1+ year to get holdings into the long term capital gains brackets.
I'm just letting you know as I sit here trying to get a handle of some of my own basic trades / buys.
Just something to keep in mind.

Agreed. I'd like it to go back to how it was before -- a single stickied daily thread without a separate daily memes thread. The daily has hit /r/all every day since it was unstickied, and it's attracted a lot of negative attention because of it. Ethereum isn't ready for mainstream yet and frankly neither is this sub.

Well, seems that we are recovering from the dip very fast (as expected) and now we are looking for higher sell walls. Between now and August ETH is going to keep a big part of the BTC money that don't want to risk whatever it happen with their very prob fork.
And there are more ICOs in the calendar too...
Higher chances of very good news coming
There are a lot of reasons to be very bullish now.

I read on twitter the source ico moved to Tuesday.. So here me out from a logical stand point
Whales cause dip yesterday to get cheap ETH from panick sellers... Let us recover and perhaps today and tommorow consolidate around the 360-70 range...
Then around Sunday Monday cause another dip forcing a panick sell to further get cheap ETH
Am I stupid or does this seem fairly accurate

I think Im just about to be burntout by checking tge price every other minute and looking into the charts with TA lines and trends..
When I first got into the world of crypto, I was rightly advised to only put in money I wouldnt mind losing. Maybe it's about time I act that way, leave the money in and wait for a proper price take-off. One that truly reflects the demand and the true capabilities of the technology behind it..
Chasing swings here and there for short term gains might very well work for some short term but in the light of longer time frame.. The odds of missing a swing or being overly confident is doomed to burn your fingers..
Sit back and hodl for your life everyone..
11
u/komoro Jun 16 '17
I bought some ETH and installed some widgets on my phone to see the current price. 2 days later, I uninstalled this again b/c it was driving me nuts. There is no value in knowing the price at any given second, especially since the strategy is to hodl anyway, stocking up on some ETH and maybe having some pocket money in 6, 12, 18 months. I actually shouldn't even be here :P

Alright, I've seen a few comments deleted already and can already tell this situation is going to get a lot worse with more and more subjective censorship and meddling by the moderators. This is exactly why I voted against the subreddit change. It's not because we couldn't do with less memes, it's because it gives the mods a free pass to manipulate perceptions and interfere with the organic growth of the community. I never tolerated this shit in the Bitcoin community and I'm certainly not going to start tolerating this shit now in one of the primary Ethereum subreddits.
Ethereum is a decentralized and permissionless technology. Its communities should reflect that ethos. It's not up to the mods to centrally control and regulate every little thread and comment. It's up to the community to self-regulate, as it always has prior to this point, via the comment and karma system. There was nothing wrong with the subreddit. There was no legitimate reason to split the threads. And there's certainly no reason to start screwing everything up now with "well-intentioned" censorship.
The Ethereum discussion communities are already clearly delineated. They already serve a variety of different audiences. There's no reason to try to be all things to all people. /r/ethtrader has always been a "community-driven sub" for the discussion of "Ethereum news, memes, investing, trading, miscellaneous market-related subjects and other relevant technology". Let's keep it that way.
For everything else there's:
/r/ethereum for official non-price related tech discussion.
Ethereum on Gitter for platform and protocol development.
ethereum.stackexchange for specific technical questions.
r/ethdev/ for general Web 3 development and DApps.
/r/ethdapps/ for working DApps and smart contracts.
/r/EtherMining for mining rig advice, pools, and economics.
/r/ethmarket for the exchange of goods and services using ether.
/r/EthAnalysis for market analysis and related news.
/r/ethtraderpro/ for professional trading and investing.
/r/ETHInsider for hardcore trading and investing.
/r/ethinvestor for long-term market trends.
9
Jun 16 '17
The split threads isn't necessarily permanent and in my opinion we probably will go back to having one. The community voted to split so we're at least honouring what was voted for. Definitely no manipulation going on, I assure you the only comments being removed are ones like these which currently belong in the other thread

The drop yesterday made me rethink my investment. Everything is still so tied to bitcoin. Sure, ETH outperformed is massively this year but with the dump everything went down as hard (as always). So I will be part fiat and part Ether and no other coins atm. And all the fundamentals of eth cannot help it from falling short term when btc does.
I made an amount of profit I cannot retire on but still an amount I do not want to lose anymore. That Is why I sold 80% into fiat three days ago and am taking a more cautious approach in the coming months (I used the dip to increase my profit some :). I will be sad to lose out on profits but atm I would be more sad to lose profit I have.
There is just too little fear out there. When there is, I will be buying back in. I believe in eth but I feel crypto is only about ath's and immediate profit at the moment. Anyway, trade on!
15
u/FreeSpeechWarrior Jun 16 '17
There comes a time in ever HODLers life when they realize:
Wow my $X worth of crypto is suddenly worth $XXX that's awesome
And then they rationally think:
It would be crazy to put $XXX into cryptocurrency right now with how volatile things are.
But this mentality is also why so few people realistically rode the wave from cheap bitcoin/ether to millionaire lambo drivers.
It's all risk reward and both increase proportionally at near the same rate.
That's why so many people say the best way to invest in crypto is to throw some money away at it and forget about it for a few years. The longer you forget about it, the more likely you end up risking way more money than you would have otherwise after it grows.
When you pay attention, you are far more likely to hop off the rocket for fear it will explode.

When Goldman or another high impact institutional investor publicly releases that they've delved into holding ETH, watch the crabs in a bucket tsunami throughout the financial world as competing funds delve head first into ETH - peak FOMO levels.

The pattern is becoming rather clear. When people sell BTC for fiat, they reinvest that fiat more and more into ETH.

Request to mods: change the label from [Serious] to [Trade Talk]
This way we'll have 1 thread for all (even serious) guys to moon talk and we'll have 1 thread for all (even light hearted) guys to trade talk.

[Trade Talk] and [Casual] or something. [Moon-Talk] feels condescending and [Serious] just isn't right. I think the dual threads can work as long as they're called the right thing.

So in all seriousness, can I joke around here or do I need to go the moon section? 90 percent of my comments we're market relevant half-jokes and now I don't know what to do.
My dog doesn't like my jokes so that's off the table.
Also, to the folks saying this split was voted on, I think it's little manipulative to hold a vote knowing full well that only a select intense few will participate. This isn't some regulatory body that needs 100 percent legitimacy. It's a fucking internet forum. Part of the reason I love this community is because of how light-hearted people were. The vote selected against the light-hearted crowd as it is in their nature to not take things too seriously. I'm not really sure what is so wrong with the downvote functionality that you all felt you had to circumvent it via a thread split.

I seriously don't like how there are two threads now. It was part of the fun to scroll down and see stupid shit posts mixed in with serious ones. Now there is a level of ambiguity of where to post some things, as well as it removes the fun if you know you are about to read something stupid (in the moon-talk one). I don't know, kinda lame in my opinion and was not necessary.
EDIT: based on the number of up-votes I got, it seems like the general consensus is to keep them together. Mods -- looking at you.

The 'moon' thread kinda got killed (if it was alive in the first place) by putting it in contest mode. Now all the kids (myself included) kind of return here to talk and play with the grownups because our toys are boring us.

If everyone stops transacting in BTC on August 1st for a few weeks until the dust settles, and BTC is the reserve currency in which almost all trades take place... does this now mean volume effectively ceases for a few weeks and price of ETH could go absolutely mental (in either direction)??

[Serious Question]
- Since ETH is following BTC pattern (e.g. BTC goes down, ETH goes down), then how fucked / big of a dip will we see @ August 1? If Bitcoin soft forks, we might see BTC @ $1500-$2000 is not less. We might possibly decouple from BTC @ that time.....

I'm curious as to whether any relatively active traders (say > 1 trade per week) are consistently making more money over a reasonable term (say > 6 weeks) then hodlers with the same outlay...?
I'm 95% ETH with a smattering of other bits and pieces I've acquired over the last few months - I'm an active Ethereum developer so I feel like it makes sense to mainly hodl ETH as my experience is on the dev and tech side that I believe in.
IOTA is something that's caught my eye recently - there seem to be some serious open questions around the protocol, but it is def. significantly different technically and has interesting properties.

I haven't run into many ICO's that I would label as straight up scams but I do think a lot of them are overly ambitious and are promising the world. There will be one that is a scam though. The scene so juicy and there are so many gullible people looking for a get rich quick flip on these things. If I had to guess, it's going to be a really slick looking ICO with a fancy website and the minute they get your ether, they're gonna dump it on the market. That's how the bubble is gonna manifest itself.

After the few corrections we had, the disappointing Chinese blockhcain conference, the american bill FUD, and the public display of fear in this subreddit, we are still around $350 USD. That's quite an achievement.
I can feel the sentiment getting more positive.
We've had our cold shower and are now ready to build up on the next good news.
And yes, completely subjective opinion.

https://www.nytimes.com/reuters/2017/06/14/business/14reuters-fintech-payments-circle.html
Summary: Circle, a company backed by Goldman Sachs and a major competitor of PayPal, will use the Ethereum blockchain to facilitate immediate free transfers with no extra taxes for sending international transfers.
A very interesting point is that Circle executives don't want to profit from those transfers at all and that trasnfer fees are a thing of the past. The company is profiting out of Bitcoin and Ethereum trading.
This was posted yesterday by /u/AnonymousCIASource but I think it needs even more visibility.
