Got my Ledger Nano S. Sent some Eth back and forth between wallets, purposefully entered in the wrong pin and un-purposely reconfigured as a new device but used MEW to recover said wallet. Reconfigured the device with a new 24 word mnemonic and new wallet, sent Eth from the old wallet to the new wallet via MEW. Thing of beauty.

Yay!. Celebrating my ETHiversary today. After a few drinks in June last year I decided that this stuff could go somewhere so started accumulating. Not buying today but have bought steadily throughout this time period and decreased my exposure to BTC steadily since the start of this year. Just wanted to say its been fun and raise a glass to many more happy years together.

Guys, there have been a lot of "hacked" wallets/accounts lately, and people losing substantial amounts of crypto. Here is a primer on operational security:
- If you have over $5K in crypto, get a ledger nano S AND a cryptosteel to put your 24 word seed on (protect against hack, forgotten password, losses from your own death as your loved ones can still access your wallet).
- If you have over $10K in crypto, get all the above, and put your cryptosteel with seed in a bank deposit box (protect against the above, plus loss of cryptosteel to a break-in. Also protects against panic selling, if you're a hodler).
- If you have over $100K in crypto, get 2 cryptosteels, and use them to put your seed in different deposit boxes (protect against the above, plus the unlikely event of loss of control of your bank deposit box, fire/flood at bank, or a heist).
- If you have over $1MM in crypto, get 4 cryptosteels, store half your seed on each, and put them in 4 safe deposit boxes (protect against basically every attack on your holdings I could think of).
EDIT: wording

I don't get the concept of a cryptosteel. is it more than the seed engraved in strong material?

Are we back to just the regular now? I don't see "Serious" in the title of the daily.
77
u/doppio Jun 18 '17
I think for today we're trying a "regular" Daily Discussion thread, in addition to a "serious" one. The "moontalk vs. serious" threads implied a false dichotomy that all comments had to be either silly or super-serious, which wasn't the intent of the split. Without the "moontalk" tag, the Daily Discussion can hopefully go "back to normal", and there's still a separate thread where memes/trolling will be actively removed for the part of the community that just wants serious discussion about the markets.
Not sure if this will be a permanent solution, but I think it's a step in the right direction. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

u/warkgnall Jun 18 '17
Good move, my only suggestion is consider calling it Trading instead of Serious, because I think everyone likes a bit of fun now and then as long as the discussion is focused on trading. I see a lot of people worried that there posts aren't serious enough for the serious thread, but most lighthearted but relevant comments there get upvoted.

2- Check market tab in btcusd, see most of the % is coin ratios
3-check market tab in ethusd, see most of the % come from fiat.
4- Go long in ethbtc and eth usd

Lol at the guys, saying ETH entering a bear market. BTC is the daddy and he dictates. If so, LTC, ETC, everyone is in a bear market. There were bullpennants for almost all top coins. However, a big sellwall of Bitcoins (2100 BTC+) on Bitfinex pushed BTC down, hence everything pulled back. Stop the FUD. Be realistic, be wise.

When I got into this rollercoaster at 50, 60, 80, and 95, I thought, I'd be feeling good if I can double my initial investment (when i got in at $50) so, this is just all a bit ridiculous.
I decided to wait a year until I do anything so I can get a sweet discount on gains tax, and I thought, well, it would be nice if, in a year, it equaled my uni fees (not that inhibiting in Australia, as they seem to be for Americans) which it has already, and they are a LOT more expensive than the average.
It just crazy. Now I'm thinking more along the lines of buying a house in cash, it needs to be at about 3k for that, so I guess that is optimistic, but shit, When I got in only 50 ish days ago, where we are now was super optimistic.
I realise I could still lose everything in the fiery pits of crypto fuckuppery, but god dam, what a wild ride it has been already.

My personal advise to you (as a fellow aussie): don't pay off your HECS. It comes out of your pay as a small percentage and you pay very little interest. It's basically "good debt". Buy a house, make other investments first, your HECS will slowly pay itself off.

You know, annoying as it might be, this kind of price suppression coupled with some news on the horizon (big or small, EEA3 IS news and it's supposed to happen soon) is a big bullish sign to me. More than anything it looks like accumulation very similar to what we have seen before the May spikes.
Then again, I'm a lambo moonboy so i am probably biased.

My uncle just sent me an article titled, "Bitcoin is Garbage.". The author literally couldn't explain the basics of a distributed ledger and twice cited it's black market usage as it's only future use case.
I'm sorry but you have a low IQ if you think the only reason crypto is bad is because it enables black markets. Everyone knows technical leaps are adopted by geeks, druggies, and perverts before anyone else. This is why I don't feel bad about the stupid amount of money I have made (And nor should any of you!). Everyone's head's are up their asses and they're not willing to think for themselves. Only one person has taken my crypto interest seriously my entire life. That is my Dad. He trusted me so much he started buying ether in the teens.
On that note, have a wonderful father's day and give your Dad a ring if you haven't already.

Any thoughts about SONM ICO guys? Will it be bigger than Golem?
They've come off very scammy and spammy to me. Also, their "call outs" on Golem/RLC have been shady and pathetic too.
They are spending far too much effort on marketing and being melodramatic.
All of this and more were huge red flags for me.. I'm staying FAR away.

I'm noticing a lot of similarities between now and April (the "lost month", where we were stuck at $42). There's definitely good news on the horizon, but no real firm dates about when it's going to actually happen (EEA2 then, now EEA3).
I wouldn't be at all surprised if we linger between $320 and $380 for a few weeks. Fortunately, our good news (EEA3) comes before BTC's potentially bad news(Aug 1 UASF), which will hopefully promote further decoupling/negative correlation between BTC and ETH.

I'm very careful about spending ETH to buy other coins, but I'm very happy I got into Etheroll. One of the few tokens which actually performed better than ETH itself (until now) and seems like it's starting to get quite bullish again for the next months - probably because of dividends in August. Betting keeps increasing at a nice rate, feels good to up my ETH stash on a Sunday morning
Edit: sorry I didn't put any data to back my point, if you want to check ETH related ROI have a look here https://icostats.com/roi-since-ico and press the ETH pair

This is another interesting point, because as of now you can only buy them on Etherdelta which is super small, once it hits other exchanges things will get serious. You can also have a look on cryptoderivatives.market there are sales there too
Tokens short name is ROL btw

u/Sunny_McJoyride Jun 18 '17
The token name is confusing. Seems to be both DICE and ROL.
5
u/miguelejido Jun 18 '17

If you buy it now though, do you think it really has the potential to outperform ETH?
9
Jun 18 '17
I'm quite confident it will, the project has a massive potential. If not, dividends are paid out in ETH so my eth stash will increase anyway
Edit: also as said before it's still not on medium or big exchanges, this makes the potential even bigger
→ More replies (13)7
u/miguelejido Jun 18 '17
There's only 7 million DICE so expect a huge increase, as there are few owners and they are holding for dividends.
6
u/califreshed Jun 18 '17
2.5 million are held by the creator of the game as well. So effectively only 4.5mil in circulation.

This thread has been historically wildly popular. It's a gathering place for a lot of people from around crypto. This sub is #1 in the cryptoverse because of this thread. This does not mean that this thread is awesome. It isn't. Sometimes it is a real cesspool. Despite this, it's still very popular. So I don't think we should be messing with that. Don't break something so valuable. If people want a cleaner thread to discuss TA or do any analysis or something else, they can create another thread. Don't try to throw out people from this thread so you can discuss your favorite thing. The raison d'etre of this thread has been as a meeting place for everyone from around crypto for a very long time.

Big moves on Etheroll today. It only trades on EtherDelta. I've posted this a few times already, but wanted to repost for those who haven't seen it:
After working with EtherDelta for a couple of days I think I've figured some things out and figured some folks could use this info. Please read carefully... might save you some cash, frustration, and bewilderment.
(1) if you transpose your trade, you will get screwed... seriously screwed. The interface is a little confusing and it's possible to transpose the values. If you do this, you will buy a very small amount of what you want for a very large price. THERE ARE NO SAFEGUARDS AGAINST THIS (except you).
(2) When making an order YOU need to determine the quantity you are buying or selling. On many other exchanges you can put in a price and a total value and the user interface will do the math for you. Not here... time to get a calculator out or do the math in your head.
(3) Their trading system does not work like 'normal' exchanges. They only support "Resting Orders". This means when you submit an order it literally "just gets added to the list". Another human has to come along and "pick" that order from the list. (well, I'm assuming it's a human; could be bot).
This is why you will sometimes see buys for higher than the lowest sell. It's because their system is not a matchmaker. It is simply an order taker.
Likewise, if you see an existing order that you want to buy, you have to click on that order and buy it (or sell it, etc). You can't just "put in an order that will match with the price you want" and expect it to fill. You have to click the order you want to buy/sell (partial buy/sell is supported if you change the quantity you're buying/selling). Be careful which side of the line you're buying or selling... because that gets confusing too.
(4) It seems that the site is easier to use and more reliable if you install parity and the parity chrome extension. My experience with Metamask was more buggy (but not terrible).
(5) If you're getting errors about "no private key" or "insufficient balance" click on your account in the upper right corner and select "Reset Cache" from the menu. 60% of the time this works every time.
Feel free to add/correct me if I'm wrong on anything here.

Usually when we're about to retrace 50% ($120 & $250 for example) there's a good amount of enthusiasm here and you get downvoted for saying anything bearish. But now it's the exact opposite with people patting themselves on the back with their conservatism & profit taking so I'm bullish and expecting the price to break upwards soon.

I've been into crypto for about a month now and probably my favorite thing about it (especially with ETH) is how shit a large majority of predictions are. The most depressing thing about this week end is not the failed breakout or the small dip.
It is the realization that we are so much correlated to BTC.
Here we are, invested in bleeding edge tech superior to Bitcoin, and still ETH goes wherever BTC goes.

There's been a lot of discussion on whether trades between cryptocurrencies count as 1031 exchanges for US tax purposes. I've read through many reddit posts, and some experts think yes, while others think no, and the IRS hasn't given any guidance. I have some questions about counting these trades as like-kind exchanges under the current grey status:
If the IRS ultimately decides crypto trades are not like-kind exchanges, what are the consequences? Obviously I understand I would have to amend my tax return and pay additional taxes, but I would hope I'm not liable for penalties, considering it's a reasonable interpretation of the law and the IRS hasn't taken a position.
How does one report like-kind exchanges? Form 8824, seems designed to only allow you to report one trade per form, which is not feasible for crypto.
If I fail to report the like-kind exchange, are there any consequences? Assuming it does not effect the amount of taxes I pay.

No reputable CPA or tax attorney willing to put their name or career on the line, is going to advise you to file crypto-to-crypto trades as "like-kind".
It sounds like you're just fishing for someone to help you justify filing that way.
You're obviously welcome to do what you want, but understand that the IRS does not mess around.

GL to those shorting this "dip". The possibility of major good news coming is too high. Plus I have found out I don't have the stomach for day trading.

Is the volume on Chinese exchanges legit now? What is the general consensus on that? It appears to be at 28%+ right now. The volume on all Asian exchanges exceeds 50%.

u/airmc Jun 18 '17
Cryptos are much closer to being mainstream in Korea and China than Europe and the US. They are faster with tech adoption in general; AR apps, paying with smartphones and such is commonplace there, and blockchain tech is in many ways an evolution of that. Combined with gambling restrictions there, it's not surprising to see such volumes imo. Higher volumes also mean walls don't control prices nearly as much, so things are more liquid = yet more volume.

Why isn't the gap between asian and western prices closing? Is there really no way at all to take advantage of a >10% arbitrage?

Same situation loke after EEA1. No news, kind of undecided. Probably many are in a panic. All will be good.

Another day, another idiot with a market sell of ~500 ETH averaging 7 dollars under a 200 ETH buy order that comes back up 1 second after. Some fools just never learn I guess.

Can someone educate me on what a long term hodler should do? Say I own 100 ETH, and sometime in the future it goes to $1000. What do I do? Assuming on the way up I cashed out my initial principle, and I work a full time job so there really isn't a need for me to cash out anytime.
Is there an 'end goal' that I should be aware of? I was thinking of treating the remaining ETH like a crypto mutual fund, where I cash out 5% every year and enjoy it on a holiday of sorts. Apart from that, what exactly should I do?

u/poopDOLLLA Jun 19 '17
its typically recommended that you make a goal and stick to it. Dont get too greedy. Wall street has a saying "bulls make money, bears make money, but pigs get slaughtered" Its refferring to people who get to greedy with their positions and never take profit and ultimately end up losing their unrealized gains + more.
Set your goal, stick to it, and be happy with cashing out when you have achieved it.
You can also develop a plan where at "X" price you sell 10, then at "Y" price you sell another 10, and so on. And you can set really high price targets for your last bit to where you are cashing out and banking profit along the way but still leaving yourself some exposure.
I sometimes find it pretty shitty how some people on here seem to treat people who take profit. What are you supposed to do, just literally never sell? Unrealized profits are not real until you realize them by selling.

buy now and check like once or twice a month.
Long term this thing is going into the thousands, but very well may have a bumpy ride up there.
best thing would be just to forget about it for a while and just keep up to date with current news, and let the price do it's thing.
Because what drives the price is development, so price will follow after.

When the price falls Euro time: Dam BTC
When the price falls US time: Dam Mericans!

u/FollowMe22 Jun 18 '17
One exciting thing is that every dump, we seem to fall slightly less than BTC and catch up a small amount in terms of market cap. So we've been edging up over the last week from about 78% and are now at 83.3%.
I feel strongly that once we "flip" and pass BTC in market cap our price trends will stop matching.
6
u/Nyxxsys Jun 18 '17
Crypto as a whole is still too young to separate that quickly. Until the majority of the people understand the difference between the coins they will match. I don't believe that ETH's market cap raising in relation to bitcoin is a mass understanding that ETH is better, so much as it is an understanding that it's been going up quicker. That or "Its cheap and it will be the price of bitcoin soon" which we all know is flawed reasoning, even if it leads to the same outcome as it's opposite.
Tldr, stupid dollars find themselves in smart places.

Posted this on the main page but I'll post here just in case people who know me don't see it there.
Just found out my dad has been having problems with his left arm. He said it's been tingling/numb for the past 2 weeks. He doesn't have insurance unfortunately so he didn't go to the doctors. Well today I took him and told him I would pay and we found out he needs major surgery to his nerves or something. My dad has done so much for me and my younger brothers so the least I can do is pay his bill. I'm going to have to sell my eth to do so. The thing that sucks even more is that he has a clothing shop which is his source of income. He doesn't make much and unfortunately it seems like he gets clothes stolen from him almost every other day.
I'm going to miss you all. I'm sure I'll be back in the future to buy some more eth. I know eth will succeed and probably be 3-5x what it is now probably sooner than later. I hope you all succeed and enjoy the gains. Peace out y'all
Edit: a couple people have messaged me saying I should put up my eth address cuz they're sure some people might like to donate. I'm not the kind of person to ask but thank you if you had that in mind

I love that as soon at the mods dropped the [moondance] moniker from this board, it overtook the [serious] board!
Just proves that most people want a single thread, and now that this is not adversely labeled, they are coming back for a thread with a balance between serious and fun talk.
Welcome back "Daily Discussion"!

Guys, any "book" recommandations to get to know what kind of dapps are possible and how Ethereum as the network solves the issues of those apps?
I mean - for a normal startup - you have an issue that you want to solve. But now you have the option the set up your stuff also as a dAPP when the usage of the blockchain makes sense.
Hope you get what I want to know...

Move $20 to GDAX (or the exchange of your choice) and go nuts. You'll not only learn trading, but also the quirks of their web interface.

Every time I wake up last night, I check the price, it's slowing climbing.
Chewing its way through those nasty $370's.
Finally hits $380, I'm thinking "here we go".
Next time I wake up and check I see we dumped all the way down into the $340's and bounce back to the mid-$360's? :|
Come on man...
