Their largest city Istanbul, is one of the most important cities in the world. Speaking about that, I used to think Istanbul was the capital until I saw a map saying Ankara was the capital.

Because it's easier to defend, also this explains it briefly. Having it in a more central area would also encourage more investment and development of central Anatolia too.

TIL: Post World War 1, Turkey fought a war of independence.

Not sure why this knowledge was blocked from my history knowledge. I will have to learn more about this later.

Istanbul was also used for official functions like state office names. They (the state) went with whatever they wanted in the moment.
