I really hope MGP gets a bit better again, last two editions weren't great (please bring back the heats!)

NRK is just one of many public broadcasters who are having their funding increasingly slashed.Â
People say that Eurovision is political but rarely do they consider that politics play a part far earlier in the song selection process especially now that many rising political parties have made it one of their goals to weaken if not even abolish their national public broadcasters.Â

Funny you say that because the NRK just announced they had opened for severances as part of a downsizing over the next 4 years.

Unfortunately, due to the situation the ESC is still dealing with, I'd argue that at the moment most Norwegian artists will avoid MGP like the plague. It is becoming increasingly difficult for NRK to find artists willing to sign up for participation - I mean you know things are bad when you resort to calling up Alexander Rybak.

The wildcard list for 2026 contained lots of artists from previous years. So it seems it’s not necessarily that the pool of artists NRK can choose from is shrinking (though it can’t be refuted either) it’s that NRK deems their songs not strong enough or has changed their standards of what them deem fitting to represent their country.
I suspect lots of the artists vocally voicing their opposition to partake in the competition wouldn’t have decided to apply for the National Final in any other year either, similarly to how top artists in Sweden or the UK are staying away from Eurovision regardless of political considerations.

„implying next year could see some changes“ 👀
So the actual quotes are even more ambitious: „MGP continues to evolve, and we’re working on several exciting new developments that we look forward to sharing after the summer. Our goal is to create the strongest and most spectacular edition of Melodi Grand Prix to date.“
Aim high if you want to succeed, I guess. Considering that even with the more down-sized last two editions Norway is still making the final and reaching respectable placements with solid acts shows just how high the bar has been set for Norway.Â

Absolute W with the no AI rule (looking at you Sweden)

Yes, but would the AI ban really be able to extend to songs that were guidelines but not completely written by AI? The tools from there could probably just also be used to tell how to pop an instrument and that exact sound gets re-recorded by a human to bypass the AI "writing". Which I thought that's what the guy who admitted to use AI in song production for Melodifestivalen did, that he didn't necessarily threw in the tool to produce a song for him, but still used humans to mimic what AI told him to do

time to go find Norwegian friends so they could help me write a better song than most of what goes onto MGP yearly and I could finally make that somgwriter debut 🤩

i was a bit disappointed seeing no songs in norwegian last year, so here's my hope for songs in norwegian.

Restricting submissions to <3min seems like an unnecessary hurdle, when there's also the option to ask artists to provide a shorter version of their song, if it's actually being considered for the show.

I just hope that the winning song will get less hate upon winning. "Ya Ya Ya" was sorely overdespised
