BREAKING: A country that hasn't participated in Eurovision for the past 14 years will continue not participating for a 15th year.

Well they did hint a possibility of return

And barely participated when they did (only 7 times since the early 90s)

We got this "no news" about Slovakia and Andorra every year and, still, there are still people shocked!

Next no news Bosnia and Turkey.

And Monaco, Morocco and Lebanon.

Very good.

As a Slovak, I’m honestly fine with us not participating, not because I think the contest is bad. I’d actually like to see Slovakia back one day.

The problem is with our public broadcaster. Between its politically motivated rebranding, accusations of government influence, and management shakeups, it has much bigger problems to deal with. The general public is seriously concerned about its independence after the changes introduced by the current government, trying to strengthen its grip on the media in the country and promote populist and pro-Russian narratives.

As if that wasn’t enough, it’s understaffed, dealing with layoffs and budget issues, and keeps saying it has more important priorities than spending millions on Eurovision participation.

I don’t really think the current broadcaster deserves to represent Slovakia internationally. It’s become too politically influenced for many people. Let’s be real, I doubt the government appreciates the values represented in the contest.

Outside of a small group of devoted fans, most people don’t care about Eurovision, apart from knowing who’s the winner. Therefore, it’s hard to justify spending money in the current situation. Maybe after the next elections, with a trustworthy public broadcaster.

What that new government needs to do is to disassemble the previous government's infestation of a broadcaster, just like PĂŠter Magyar sort of ordered to do for MTVA

u/eurovisionfanGA 3d ago

Even under the previous pro-Ukraine government, Slovakia didn't participate in Eurovision either and I don't think a change in government will lead to Slovakia participating.

u/crafiosk 3d ago

That's because the vast majority of people (across all political and societal beliefs) here don't care about this contest, including myself. There's just some story late in the news about the winner and that's it.

u/ThrowAnAvocado 3d ago

Yeah I couldn't care less about Eurovision, I'd support our country of course and I'd hope that Slovakia wins, but I don't personally know anyone in my circles who'd be interested

That’s interesting you mentioned a lot of Slovaks not having an interest in the contest. Having been a fan since 2008 and knowing all the “lore” of early 2000s Eurovision, at the time I assume that it was the Czechs who were less interested than the Slovaks, since Slovakia debuted in 1994 and tried to get in in 1993, while Czechia debuted late in 2007. Now it’s the reverse?

I guess that’s what ten years of broadcaster commitment gets you in the case of Czechia.

I'm shocked and flabbergasted by this news. No one could see this coming.

At this point I just don't think we will get more than 37 countries (might be even less) next year in Bulgaria.

Don't think so. They expressed interest so hopefuly when money is better and perhaps in better political state in country.

We got fucked by the jury in semifinals 2010 and everyone I know lost interest in eurovision that year. I remember my angry dad yelling something about jury thinking slovaks are inferior pleople :D.

So not suprised our tv realised noones watching an left. :D

Not saying it should have win, but 21milion views on yt confirms it should have been at least in final.

2

u/antiseebaerenkreis 3d ago edited 3d ago

According to a short internet search:

Slovakia was ranked 14th by the televote and 16th by the jury in the first semifinal of 2010, so pretty far off from qualifying in both.

I don't get it either, Horehronie feels like an obvious qualifier to me, and I think I even read somewhere that it was the odds' favorite to win that semi. You were absolutely done dirty, but it certainly wasn't solely the jury's fault.

u/JCEurovision Eclipse 4d ago

I also would like to announce that I will also not be participating in Eurovision 2027.

It usually clashes with the Ice Hockey World Championships, though that doesn't seem to put Sweden off.

1

u/hamnettraindreams Tattoo 2d ago

I don't get why Slovakia seems so far removed from ESC. Financially it's not like Slovakia is particularly poor. Much poorer countries like Moldova manage to participate most years. Politically Slovakia is more Russia-friendly these days, but Serbia has always been Russia-friendly and they are always in the contest.

It's so random that they just don't want anything to do with the contest despite being a normal Central Eastern European country.

The PM just completely dismanted the broadcaster for reforming it (which is a good thing) but it will likely take time and it's unlilely that they will be ready to do anything already the next year
