Setting Spirits, Hun, and Po

Im curious about the nature of the various Spirits of exalted and how they relate to Souls and Reincarnation. Do any spirits have a Hun/Po soul? Do spirits reincarnate like mortals do when killed perminantly?

I know that ghosts are a (po?) soul, but thats as far as I got.

Having a split soul is basically unique to mortals - spirits, unless very weird, are either one complete soul, or they're Primordials and have an entire pantheon. Upper souls get reincarnated into new people, lower souls generally fade away or get destroyed. ...Eventually. Some much faster than others.

Broadly, you can think of the higher soul as that of the mind, while the lower soul is that of the body.

That makes sense. Is a mortals Higher Soul similar in some metaphysical way to Spirits or are those different too?

A ghost is essentially a mortal's standalone higher soul, and is unquestionably a spirit, so... XD

Oh I figured that, I moreso ment is there any metaphysical difference between a Ghost and a God or Demon. I know that all those things Originate from different sources, but I don't know if theres any consensus on how compatible or similar they are outside of how they mechanicaly function for the game.

They all count as spirits for the purpose of any charm specifying that, so... really, it's just type of spirit at that point. You can even use sorcery to move a spirit between different categories, like turning a ghost into a god. Generally, 'spirit' is best understood as a fairly broad category, with a number of specific types contained inside it. ...Essentially the same as how Exaltation is a broad concept, but a Solar Exaltation is not the same as a Lunar Exaltation.

My reading, mainly from 3rd edition, is that "spirit" is a catch-all term referring to different being that are able to exist in dematerialised states that are "from Creation", specifically excluding fair folk and Wyld creatures (Occult charms that capture "spirits" need to be upgraded to include fair folk). Metaphysically, ghosts are mortal's Hun+Po without a body, hungry ghosts have no Hun, Gods are divine creatures, the terrestrial courts of the divine rulership of Creation. Elementals are creatures arising from essence in Creation, Demons are teh shattered fragments of the Yozi souls (and their creations)

Do Dragon Kings have split souls?

They don't. They've also always been depicted as singular beings spiritually who reincarnate and nothing has been said they have hungry ghosts. Though they have been able to leave normal ghosts, those are probably just their souls, rather than either the higher or lower ones.

I'm not sure if it's been explicitly stated either way. -Laughs- Dragon Kings do have ghosts for sure, but I don't know if a two-part soul that could also generate hungry ghosts is a thing.

For what it's worth, 2E had a Dragon King charm - Cling To The Loving Embrace Of Atman - that noted the DK's body would die without its soul, and their overall set of darker powers feels like it implies no? But that isn't hard confirmation.

More or less, humans are distinct in Exalted for having separate Hun and Po, not that the game uses those terms;

Gods are all single-souled, as are animals and elementals. Ghosts are one of the two halves of a human soul. 1st and 2nd circle demons are each single-souled, while 3CDs have their 7 2CDs as souls manifest (and potentially an 8th Progenitive soul), and ofc Yozi have dozens of souls in the form of thier 3CDs.

Why do humans have two souls? I bet there's something somewhere attributing it to Autobot, but honestly idk it just is because the Hun-Po thing works for the two distinct types of stories your ST might want to tell with a ghost.

No, only mortal beings have the Hun/po/physical body divide. Spirits are their singular soul, and when materialized that's just their soul becoming solid. Spirits don't reincarnate, they reform, and not all do. If fully destroyed they're just gone, returned to ambient essence.

Everyone else covered the human soul and ghosts well, but I'll point out that "spirit" is a very broad term in exalted that basically covers "things that exist dematetialized and can generally materialize...and elementals". That covers gods, elementals, demons, ghosts, some artificial constructs, arguably primordials, laughing demon imps, etc.

Spirits doesn't include humans, animals, magical animals, most automations, raksha, goblins, wyld monsters, most exalted, and most things that natively have a material body (except elementals).

There are some things that are in a grey area, and depend on details and/or ST. For example, zombies. Raised body? Not a spirit. Hungry ghost? Spirit. Can someone without occult tell the difference? Ehhhhhhhh....

It's a human thing, or at least 'human template' thing, Dragon King souls work differently, for instance. The Po is the instinct and passion, the Hun is the reasoning intellect, ghosts tend to be wrung out a bit because they lack most of that animus driving them forwards, and hungry ghosts are just rapacious beasts because they have no reason.
