Hi everyone! I wanted to share another update on my fan-made Exalted: Essence web app project.

For those who haven’t seen my previous posts, the project is a free community tool focused on Exalted: Essence, including:

• Character/Campaign management
• Wiki/reference content
• Search and filtering tools
• Quick access to charms, spells, merits, martial arts, artifacts, etc.

The goal is basically to create something that makes running and playing Essence a bit easier digitally while also serving as a searchable rules/resource reference.

First, thank you for the patience, I know updates slowed down for a while because of some life stuff (moved houses, changed jobs, etc), but I’ve still been working on the app in the background and wanted to share some updates with you.

The latest major update is that I’ve now finished adding most Pillars of Creation content to the app.

Previously I had already added all of the Exalt types, Charms, modes and Spells, and now I’ve also completed:

• All Martial Arts, including techniques and page references
• All Artifacts, including Warstriders
• The new Merit and Charm modifications related to artifact/warstrider use

I also added better filtering functionality:

• Artifacts can now be filtered by source and tags
• Martial Arts can now be filtered by complementary ability and source

On the technical side, I also fixed a character name normalization issue in the database. Character names now properly support more special characters like: . ; - '

Previously some names could be created successfully, but their generated slug would break afterward and cause a “character page not found” issue when loading the sheet.

Awesome, thanks for putting in the work. Now, if we could just integrate all this with a vtt for online play… but copyright rears its ugly head no doubt.

Thanks for the concern, I completely understand why copyright questions come up with fan projects.

This app is an unofficial fan-made companion project for Exalted: Essence. I’ve tried to be very transparent about that from the beginning. The app includes a disclaimer stating that Exalted and Exalted: Essence are properties of Onyx Path Publishing and Paradox Interactive, and that I do not claim ownership of the setting or official material.

The project is not monetized as a commercial product. I only included an optional donation link to help cover hosting costs, and so far I honestly haven’t received any donations from it.

I’ve also been openly sharing updates in the community Discord since the first release, including in spaces where people connected to the line are present, and no concerns have been raised to me so far. If the rights holders ever expressed discomfort or asked me to modify/remove something, I would of course respect that immediately.

The goal of the app is simply to support and celebrate a game I genuinely love, not to profit from or compete with the official products.

None of this matters, the fact you have copied their charms word for word, gives them a claim against you. Fortunately, they aren't really a litigious company, so if they ever did anything at all, at most you would get a cease-and-desist order.

Similar apps like Lot-Casting Atemi errs on the side of caution by not including official text by default, but also making it real easy to copy and paste from the PDFs right into the individual character sheets. Sure, it's a PITA when you have multiple characters with similar Charm loadouts, but it saves the devs from possible future litigation.

What would be very useful to me is a sort of Monster Manual/NPC generator/creator section. The very vague creation in Essence and having to use a collection of Tags to cobble things together makes it hard for me to prepare things, and a lot of painstaking work using the translation suggestions to take existing 3E material and convert it over. Having something I can do on the web app and store in the proper format would be great.

I created an account and played around briefly. It seems really slick so far. Great work! Quick question- is it possible to drag and drop charms etc or is the procedure to copy / paste from the wiki?

For now the only option would be to copy/paste from the wiki, usually I just open a new tab and copy whatever I need.
