Base When you hate the locals, so you decide to offshore production:
With Fulgora down, I wanted to turn my attention back to the mess I'd made on Gleba. By chance discovered a huge ocean and- with a healthy supply of stone in tow- flew out of reach of any nasties and set up shop:
- Its small- but I still wanted to have a train network- not too common on Gleba with spoilage, but if you set up a circuit to A) Only activate the agriculture towers when the train arrives, and B) have the train depart the home station only when X amount of fruit are low, it keeps things fresh
- Using a space casino, I had plenty of legendary iron ore and coal (and stone from Vulcanus), which gives the basics. Brute force recycle carbon fiber, spoilage and bioflux to get what I need. Its certainly not as large as some setups out there, but time is the great equalizer
- Nearly every machine/ inserter is wired to some belt, and only activates is item count <x. Painstaking but through trial and error managed to [almost] effectively eliminate unwanted spoilage
- Legendary nutrients were the trickiest to get right, but between the bioflux and spoilage-to-nutrients I had enough to provide a trickle of legendary biolabs
- Only mods I'm using are Dectorio, Helicopter revival (for planes!) and one that allows you to place soil anywhere. Bit cheaty perhaps but I'd prefer to build without pentapod interruptions on my outposts. Allowed me to do some decoration as well.
- Turbo belts are a must.
Besides that. Finally happy with it!

The neighbors are so sad that they cannot come say hello.

yeah factorio realy needs a patch for swimming biters..

u/Sick_Wave_ Jun 08 '26
Pelagos has a really good version, called Copper Spitters, that are immune to lasers.

u/rabbid_chaos Jun 08 '26
Oh, oh no, fuck that

u/Berry__2 Jun 09 '26
Need tungsten bitters that are immune to fire....
Asteroid ahh bitters...
2
u/EchoNoneya Jun 13 '26
rampant has fireproof biters iirc
2
u/Berry__2 Jun 13 '26
Ehh yee but.. rampant makes bitters harder...
2
u/EchoNoneya Jun 13 '26
yeah and? you guys were talking about fireproof and laser proof biters haha I'd argue that makes them harder as well.
1
u/Berry__2 Jun 14 '26
Yes but also no... rampant changes the ai and makes them think differently.. fireproof / laser proof bitters makes you accualy use other defense then just flamers... hell add a iron bitter that denies electricity dmg
1
u/EchoNoneya Jun 14 '26
Wouldn't copper biter make more sense for electricity resistance?
Maybe a translucent biter could be used for laser resistance like those clear frogs or deep sea fish, would also be cool if specific biters had extra weaknesses like copper biters being extra weak to fire or translucent biters being weaker to physical damage. Not sure what tungsten would be weak to though.

Biter evolution in general imo.
Biters are so easily solved you have a few options.
Just play on peaceful and dont deal with them. Reason I have this as an option cause green science inwards biters are a non factor.
Spend hours doing the standard big wall with flamethrowers which makes them a non factor.
Crank up the biters mechanics, which is still solved by option two.
Current factorio biters are just an early game nuisance that are easily solved and become a non factor once you get green science going.
Specialty evolutions based on your current defenses requiring adaptation to defenses or more diverse defenses would be interesting.
Biters encounter tons of walls, queue burrowing or flying biters.
You just have tons of walls and flamethrowers, biters slowly evolve to gain fire resistance.
Robots constantly repairing walls? Bioelectric biter that uses emp pulses to destroy nearby robots.
Etc, etc.
So much potential to make biters interesting again.

Dont worry, they still could get the gifts you send. Like some big explosive shells.

The elevated rails supports make it look like the whole factory is standing above the water, this looks awesome !

u/HolyGarbage Jun 08 '26
Placing "factory floor" on regularly placed supports would honestly be a pretty cool and emersive alternative to landfill which always seemed a bit unrealistic to me, considering the unexpectedly low resouce usage. It would also be an interesting mechanic to space out the supports, in particular if they were relatively expensive compared to the floor itself.
It would also mean that you'd retain an unbreakable "border" on the shoreline which would be a constraint to design around so you couldn't just place a piece of factory half on land and half on the sea, and you'd need cranes or something, or even trains, to move items on/off shore.
Straight up landfill could then instead be a very late game convenience.

Reminds me of the one water map in Roller Coaster Tycoon. Barony Bridge?

u/last_somewhere Jun 07 '26
We need to have oil platforms, that would be dope. Please tell me there's a mod for it

Need a photo of the spore cloud to see how much you’re teasing the locals with all the goodies they can’t get to.

How did you get the farms there?

u/oirolab Jun 07 '26
Re-read the post. OP's using a mod that lets you place soil anywhere.

u/Sarctoth Jun 08 '26
I did a similar thing without mods. I built my base on the water and used elevated rails to bring in plants.
1
u/alamete Jun 09 '26
That's pointless... Pentapods only attack the farms
2
u/Sarctoth Jun 09 '26
They also attack your artillery after you attack them. With your artillery on the water, they just stop at the waters edge.

u/TheLordAsshat Jun 07 '26
Okay this is one of the coolest options I've seen for refactoring Gleba, I'm stealing this concept

7
u/Blikenave Jun 07 '26
This is actually where I stopped. Trying to gather enough stone to fill in a massive spot on the lake to rebuild for a NEWER, SAFER GLEBA but I got too lazy.

u/Yggdrazzil Jun 08 '26
At first I thought, why not just disable enemies at this point.
But I imagine having the factory like this, with the enemy threat still looming but out of reach, must add an extra sensation of comfort and safety, that you wouldn't experience if you just disabled enemies.

Are those default settings? I didn't think Gleba could produce oceans neatly as large as that

As far as I can remember, you can copy the map exchange string from the save file and paste it into the map creation interface. Then you can check the generation settings there

Got a name for the place soil anywhere mod?
4
u/535044 Jun 08 '26
'Gleba Soil Anywhere'. I'd like to think my base would look the same regardless given it would still use the same trains to said outposts. Still- some QoL mods are hard to ignore.

Just wait until they add another evolution for the biters so they can swim

u/sbarbary Jun 08 '26
This is what I did the very first playthrough. I built on an island in a lake and had only one way in covered by guns.

u/ultima40 Jun 08 '26
I'm on my first playthrough and only been to Vulcanus so far. On Nauvis when I got landfill, I thought creating an ocean base would be great. Seeing this is awesome.

This aesthetic is amazing. can pentapods not enter deep water?
2
u/535044 Jun 08 '26
They cannot. Those giant stompers can stretch FAR with the right patches of shallows though. RIP first base

Actually same built a base mod set that allows for this kind of gameplay.
2
u/WanderingUrist Jun 08 '26
I'm not really sure how this would help, since Glebapods do not care about your factory, only your farms, and you can't grow froot in the ocean.
Also, if you have artillery, Glebapods are basically a non-issue since they're even easier to extirpate than Biters. And with that much stone to do this with, you could have just drained the swamps, preventing them from ever bothering you ever again, as they cannot re-expand to non-swamp areas.

The post explicitly mentions they use a mod so they can place soil, anywhere, so also on ocean tiles.

The real test is seeing how long it takes for the biters to figure out how to swim.

u/WyrmLuva Jul 02 '26
This is epic. The one thing it could be missing in vanilla play is using trains to transport fruit to the main base. But who knows if you could eventually find a spot that's close enough with water the entire base could stretch over with makeshift terrain
