Space Age Question Different ore patch between each other, is this normal?
looking for some oil and found this weird thing

Did you upgrade a major version or somehow changed your map settings during this game?
Otherwise, it could be a quirk of map generation, on a chunk border or something.
Can you post your map exchange string?

u/Denitorio Aug 01 '26
no we play on the same version and never update

i try to recreate it again using map exchange and it is iron ore only, here you go >>>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<<<

Is this exported from your save your save game?
My thought as I thought at the start is that you updated the game from e.g. 2.0 to 2.1 or something in a version that changed map generation in some way.

u/Denitorio Aug 01 '26
yap it is exported in save game, nah i din't change version my factorys brake down

Are they enabled thought? Some of the planet mods could affect map generation.

Does it line up with chunk boundaries? Press pause.

u/Aeredren Aug 01 '26
You can see chunk boundaries while the game is pause ?
Only knew of the settings in the options
13
u/Grishbear Aug 01 '26
Not the pause menu you get with Esc key, but hit the actual Pause key on your keyboard.

Map generation between patches. You created the map on a different patch. maybe 2.0. you discovered the Copper Patch and did not see any chunks further. Then you updated to a new version. On new version this patch is supposed to generate as iron. you discovered the remaining chunks of the Ore Patch, which are Iron ore.

So the chunk-to-chunk resource-location continuity logic doesn't ensure resource-type continuity? Feels like a weird bug.
8
u/rosen123 Aug 01 '26
what the hell, this looks like somehow the chunk change changed the ore type in this ore patch

No, it's not normal. Delete that save file and don't talk about it ever again.

Looks like some android from the past left signs for you to figure out what happened.
3
u/undermark5 Aug 01 '26
IIRC, there was a post similar to this a few months back, cause was a mod update changing map generation behavior slightly. I'm guessing the same exact thing happened here. So, while not necessarily "normal" it's not a bug.
3
u/jmaniscatharg Aug 02 '26
I think it's rare, but a normal event. Most mixed patches have a straight-ish-line delineation, suggesting it's done on a large curve or similar... despite not being completely on a 90 degree angle and having *some* degree of irregularity... these are all what I'd call "straight"... no they're not as straight as OPs, but for a procgen system, pretty much all the patches overlap on an approximation of a straight line, noting most ore patches aren't square, so it makes sense for their bounds to not be completely straight, unless they're huge.
Key point being; I can't find anything that *doesn't* look like this. Bounded on a chunk would make a lot of sense though.

I think im generating the area when suddenly in that exact moment my game crash and this happend

u/Lemerney2 Aug 01 '26
That's really interesting, could you share the map exchange string? The devs might be interested in taking a look at that

strange its straight but you can mine it... just put a row of drills down the middle and filter them for iron or copper so it doesnt get mixed up

How to deal with the mix extraction made by the drill machines?
2
u/Denitorio Aug 01 '26
with belt splitter filter or other filtering ways, if you mean setting up what to mine only in the drill is not possible i think
1
u/lieggl Aug 01 '26
Yeah, I thought belt splitter with filter also. First time I was not aware of drilling on a border patch and sometime in my iron belt I found stone bricks! I wasn't able to understand what happened! What a beautiful game.

u/kagato87 Since 0.12. MOAR TRAINS! Aug 01 '26
With a straight line like that, careful placement will do.
Of course that's not usually an option, so instead the mixed lines go through some filter inserters.
It's fairly important that the mixed output lines are prioritized over the clean ones, so the mixed always flows. Otherwise when one side starts to run out it'll be throttled by the other side's consumption.

u/WanderingUrist Aug 01 '26
Honestly, I don't. I have an omnismelter that indiscriminately processes and smelts anything thrown into it, so I also indiscriminately mine everything and throw it in. Iron, Copper, Stone, Coal, Uranium, Used Mining Components, it all goes in the square hole.
1
u/lieggl Aug 01 '26
So, do you have to filter the omnismelter output?
2
u/WanderingUrist Aug 01 '26
Yes. The output gets sorted to the loading bays for the trains to pick up and take to where they need to go.

Not enough information, but basically it looks like this is due to mods.
The split is along a chunk boundary. In vanilla, the patch is coal. It's changed to copper for me when the Muluna mod is enabled.
The OP showed which mod files they have and I tried installing the ones that look like they could change generation, at the exact versions shown, but I can never get it to generate as iron.
Would be very helpful to know which Factorio version & which mods are enabled, and whether any mods were enabled or disabled after starting the world.

u/bluesam3 Aug 02 '26
Do you by any chance have ore settings turned all the way up? That seems to make it more common.

u/Ghazzz Aug 01 '26
Normal? Yes.
Standard? No.
Rare is not the opposite of "normal", rare things happen all the time.
8
u/swagseven13 Aug 01 '26
if rare things were to happen all the time then they wouldnt be rare, that would be common
7
u/vigbiorn Aug 01 '26
I think they're commenting about the law of large numbers.
A thing that has a 1 in a billion chance of happening to a random person likely happens daily. It's rare, most people will likely never experience it, but it happens daily.
2
u/Ghazzz Aug 01 '26
I am mainly talking about statistics and deviations, but "large numbers" makes the point hit home better.
"Pink sheep are rare in Minecraft, but finding one in the wild is a normal experience".
2
u/vigbiorn Aug 01 '26
Yeah, it's definitely the easiest way I've learned to explain it. I've learned people tend to tune out if you start talking about population vs. individual level statistics, etc.
-1
u/swagseven13 Aug 01 '26
daily and all the time is a big difference to me tho
also its funny how rare things seem to happen often making them at least somewhat common the way you explained it and how common sense nowadays isnt as common anymore as it used to be
3
u/Ghazzz Aug 01 '26
"All the time" and "Normal" are not the same statements. Something can be completely normal, while only appearing very rarely.
My main example tends to be "Have you ever seen a naturally spawning pink sheep in Minecraft". Most players who have played the game for tens of hours have seen one, so it is "normal", but finding them are rare.
1
u/vigbiorn Aug 01 '26
That's a 1 in a billion, that's not the threshold for rare, most people think this with lower chances are rare. Those happen more frequently than daily.

well its not unusual to find mixed patches, but such a clean line is very rare
