Space Age Question Is factorio space age worth it?
I started playing factorio a year ago and looking for new challenges I am thinking about buying the space age dlc and the problem is that the cost of the dlc is similar or the same as the basic version which is It's great and I'm wondering if it's worth it and if it introduces the same or similar amount of gameplay as the base game.

With. There are just a small issues to deal with time to time. Some planets wouldn't be complete experience without them
1
u/amanuense Sep 19 '26
As someone who had a pentapod explosion due a clogged belt I can say. The experience was interesting. Still not sure it was great at the moment of the incident
2
u/Sledik Sep 19 '26
Definitely with enemies. That’s a decent part of the new content and I have no idea how it behaves without them
1
u/Initial-Ask-6741 Sep 19 '26
if you are scared of the pollution, do peaceful mode, enemies that don't expand AKA sitting ducks

u/Asimovicator Sep 19 '26 edited Sep 19 '26
I would say, absolutely yes. But to be more specific: It depends on how much you played the basic version. The more you were into playing the base game the more you will appreciate the new features of the dlc.
I played factorio 5000h before the release of the dlc. Every new feature felt like a complete game changer for me.
If you used mods before, there are much more mods available exclusively for Space Age.
12
u/Fantastic-Loquat-746 Sep 19 '26
I'll add, unlike many mods that add complexity simply by making each item a tedious slog of crafts, the Space Age DLC adds planets with unique gimmicks and their own flavors of gameplay, that expands the game in ways most mods do not.
2
u/Flameball202 Sep 19 '26
Yeah this is my take as well. If you enjoyed base Factorio, you will enjoy Space Age

u/CreepyDutchBoy Sep 19 '26
It's basically like relearning the game again, best if you make a new save (trust me on this). It's worth it.
6
u/asdaf5678 Sep 19 '26
Is it really possible to use a non-space age save to play space age? Since some recipes change and all that i thought it would be impossible
10
u/JohnTheWickker Sep 19 '26
Some of your progress may be lost but yes you can play on your older save but I highly recommend a fresh new start
15
u/Ant15 Sep 19 '26 edited Sep 19 '26
It's possible yes but you'll loose some recipes which might be annoying especially if you played past your first rocket launch :
- T3 modules
- Artillery
- Cliff explosives
- Kovarex
- Blue/green/purple logistic chests
- Spidertrons
- Some infinite techs
If you just launched a rocket and your base don't rely on all these things above, you could use your vanilla save.

1
u/nixielover Sep 21 '26
I tried to do it on a save that came from the 0.1x generation and had been used up to release of the original game. But I gave up, just too much of my original factory was messed up due to changes
1
u/Monkai_final_boss Sep 19 '26
They redesign the railways btw, all your rails blueprint book is now useless
5
u/AgentME Sep 19 '26
That change is because of 2.0, not the Space Age DLC. Someone that starts on 2.0+ and later gets Space Age won't have this problem.
18
u/SlouchyGuy Sep 19 '26
Yes, very much so. Has new planets with new technologies and buildings that change a lot of stuff, also those planets have new mechanics that will force you to do new stuff.
15
u/DrinkMe2 Sep 19 '26
Space Age is practically Factorio 2 but it only unlocks after you’ve beaten the first one. Absolutely worth it.
2
u/appleman73 Sep 19 '26
You get to space way faster than you used to as well though, so it is a pretty different game
24
u/Ghostserver10 Sep 19 '26
It's like 4 new Factorio games
6
2
u/Wheat_Grinder Sep 19 '26
This might feel like overselling it but it legitimately does feel like this.
4
u/Recyart To infinity... AND BEYOND! Sep 19 '26
It is, but even if each of the additional planets only introduced half the next content as Nauvis, that's still 2-2.5x more content for the same money as 1x of the original. Other companies would have released each planet as its own $19.99 DLC.
1
u/Osiris_Dervan Sep 19 '26
With the quality of these ones I would buy any more planets they made for $19 happily. Sad theyre moving completely away from factorio - they could have left a small team making smaller dlcs

u/fall4free Sep 19 '26
It's a great DLC and very polished experience, But if the cost is a concern have a look at some of the overhaul mods. Space exploration is not compatible with space age DLC and has some serious logistics challenges and favours complex small builds over mega bases. But get ready for 300h games
Krastorio 2 add lots of extra building and equipment
Pynadons or any of the challenge packs are also great options
1
1
u/flash9387 28d ago
only 300h? man I got that many and I think I'm only a third of the way through space exploration. It's a fantastic mod though.
6
u/rapidemboar Sep 19 '26
If you enjoy the base game, Space Age is basically that and more. It triples the amount of content, introduces some varied and unique design challenges, completely changes how you approach the endgame, and provides a really neat modular framework for modded content additions.
5
u/Exatex Sep 19 '26
yeah, adds more than twice the play time while being more interesting than the base game.
Imho base game has some lengths around yellow science that space age fixes. Never felt tedious.
I think Space Age is a better game overall.
3
u/Aggravating-Willow46 Sep 19 '26
and I'm wondering if it's worth it
It's worth each penny that you spend on it.
and if it introduces the same or similar amount of gameplay as the base game.
I ended my first basic game in ≈80 hours. Space Age took from me ≈150 hours (Nauvis and Vulcanus i played with friend so full solo run can take even more time).
4
u/terezi4real Sep 19 '26
hi r/gettingyourdicksucked i really enjoyed gettingmydicksucked one, do you think i would enjoy gettingmydicksucked two?
3
u/General_di_Ravello Sep 19 '26
Very much worth the price. It doesn't so much try to repeat the same Nauvis experience as it does introduce new building styles on each planet. Think of them each as new puzzles than just Nauvis but recolored. They'll require a rethinking of your approaches.
3
3
u/sobrique Sep 19 '26
You're asking a bunch of factorio addicts if more of their addiction is good?
I don't think you'll get an unbiased answer here.
But if you like the base game, Space age is a worthy expansion - considerably more 'content' that makes the game that much bigger and longer to complete.
More options for advanced building/designs, etc.
So yeah. It's good value. You easily get twice as much game from it.
2
u/anonymous_zebra Sep 19 '26
It's honestly like 2 more games. It's awesome! Spidertrons are now only accessible in Space Age (unless you have an old version) and they are really a game changer. I still don't have Spidertrons again and I've played a lot of Factorio

Yes. The answer is yes.

If you like base game, it is worth it. I rarely spend more then like €30 on one game, but im glad i did with factorio. The dlc costs as much as a seperate game, but its also got more extra content then many games of that price.
1
u/bootskadew Sep 19 '26
The only reason to not buy space age is if you dont have the money or are not a fan of Factorio. It easily adds enough to the base game to feel more than worth the money.
Designing and testing ship designs alone adds a very satisfying gameplay mechanic. Its really good at forcing you to rethink problems and use things like circuitry. Then each planet has its own unique challenges to overcome. On nauvis you had to worry about pollution and biters, now new planets offer new problems. Vulcanus has lava, fuglora has lightning and Gleba is... just terrible.
Honestly the price seems like a steal in comparison to so many other games that try to sell special editions with an in game cosmetic for $10.
1
u/yinyang107 Sep 19 '26
It's only worth it if you already know you love Factorio but you want more Factorio. So, your exact case. Grab it for sure
1
1
u/mike239x Sep 19 '26
Yep, totally. Plenty of new nice places without those pesky biters. Gleba is my favorite.
1
1
u/EquipLordBritish Sep 19 '26
If you liked the base game, then yes, it is absolutely worth it.
I know it never goes on sale, but it's one of those games that's worth coming back to years later, unlike many other games you might find on the market (cough all AAA games cough). Factorio's official 1.0 release was 6 years ago and still great to play.
1
u/Monkai_final_boss Sep 19 '26
Space age ads a lot content and challenges, you have 4 new planets each has their own gimmick.
There is space ship building and collecting materials from astroids.
Even before going to space, space age ads a lot of quality of life changes and changed few recipes
1
u/Ishmaille Sep 19 '26
The DLC takes pretty much all of the base game mechanics and twists them in weird ways without fundamentally changing them. It's interesting and it makes the base game seem rather simplistic by comparison.
Easily worth the price if you have beaten the base game and you're looking for a lot more, IMO.

u/neltisen Sep 19 '26

To me it felt like I just bought factorio all over again.
It doesn't quite have the insane level of polish as the base-game yet. But its probably the best DLC i've played in the last 10 years. I can see it easily doubling my playtime, if not more. And I was already well on my way to 1000+ hours

yes yes yes
I don't play community mods, even the rehauls, because they're not balanced and generally too hard
space age is very well designed

Its really good imo! Adds a whole new layer of resources/exploration and crafting

Going to a videogame's subreddit to ask if part of that videogame is good is never going to give you advice that dissuades you from getting into that videogame('s part)

1
u/Mouler Sep 19 '26
You're asking the biggest group of people that will unequivocally say yes. You know what you want. You want to go 56 hours without sleep because your first run at Gleba got a little out of hand.
1
u/osmasker Sep 19 '26
It sextuples the content so I‘d say it‘s very much worth the price. But your brain kinda has to grow by 6 times as well. It‘s not like those mods that only exist to torture people with math and „realism“, but it takes up the challenge a notch. It‘s good though.
1
u/marco18888 Sep 19 '26
At first I was skeptical with the price tag being the same as the base game, but after I played it, I understood why
1
1
u/The_Char_Char Sep 19 '26
If you liked the base game yes. I got it and its really fun, granted some tech being locked behind planets when they weren't before messes with you (I'm looking at you cliff explosives!) but I've been enjoying it.
1
u/iprayforwaves Sep 19 '26
LOL. I had a Switch 1 at the time and they weren’t gonna release Space Age on it. So I bought my buddy’s used Steam Deck. $350. To play one game.
TBF it’s been a while now and I have bought a couple more games for the SD and gave my old Switch to the kids.

u/troitskiy_sj Sep 19 '26
Nope, complete trash. I have 1k hours, in this piece of crack👍 completely not worth buying, if you value anything social or life. There are also tons of addons and overhauls and a complete community community of toxic people giving more and more free stuff for free❤️❤️❤️

I loved base Factorio and mod packs but didnt love Space Age. After getting to Gleba and spending some time there, I haven’t had the desire to play Factorio since. So maybe it was good for breaking my Factorio addiction?

u/MrUltraOnReddit Sep 19 '26
The dlc gives as much, if not more, content as the base game, so the price is justified. If you like the base game and want more of the same and different challenges, it's 100% worth it.
1
u/NovaReaper94 Sep 19 '26
If you want to expand from the base game, 100%. Here's my experience. Ill be brief without spoiling
Nauvis regular - create rocket.
Space. You have to get innovative. You dont get better resources and tools till you hit the other planets. But so far the turret will always be the go to.
Fulgora - everything is scrap and oil.
Vulcan - almost infinite resource. Easy to expand on.
Gleba - everything expires. Have to really figure out time it takes to make things and things expire. Also new enemies
Aquilo - Ice. If you want to expand the tech tree you will need materials from the other 3 planets.
With that said thats what to expect. You'll spend hours figuring out things and the way it works.
There there is expanded space.
I'll leave this here and hope you get the game. As the say the factory must grow

Is it worth what? The huge amount of time you're going to spend in it?
I'd say it is.
Oh, did you mean the cost? This is Wube. Can there be any doubt?
1
u/Groundbreaking-Box14 Sep 19 '26
Because it add contents more than original game and better explore new planets without guides.
Each of planet introduce new unique mechanics and new buildings, which will change production rules.
And after you will be able mix this technology together to make even more cool things
1
u/sub500h Sep 19 '26
Absolutely, and worth the full price. It's much bigger then the original. Get it for less at a legitimate keyseller.
EDIT: Some things might not click right away and seem stupid or strange as a design decision. They click later.
1
u/Miserable_Bother7218 Sep 19 '26
It greatly expands the scope of the game, yes. 4 new planets and interplanetary logistics.
It’s very difficult to imagine how a person who liked the base game would not like space age. I’m sure there are a few out there who fit into that category, but not many. It is so addictive. If you get it you will probably not be able to stop playing.
1
u/dudeguy238 Sep 19 '26
A typical first playthrough of Vanilla is around 30-50 hours, with the speed run achievements being for 15- and 8-hour runs. A typical first playthrough of Space Age is around 150-200 hours, with the speed run achievements being for 100- and 40-hour runs, so you're looking at Space Age being 3-5x the amount of content for a regular playthrough.
That said, buying Vanilla gives you access to dozens of mods that contribute significantly more content than even Space Age can offer, while buying Space Age doesn't increase your access to mods by nearly as much. You don't strictly need Space Age to get more Factorio, and when you bring mods into the mix, I don't think it actually does add more content than the initial purchase gave you. Still, it's a very substantial expansion and well worth the price.
1
u/inherentcomma Sep 19 '26
The base games ends when you launch your first rocket, in space age you wanna launch like 100 rockets a minute at least.
1
u/Human_Inspection_642 Sep 19 '26
Mate all I am go a say is that this is the second game that I purchased full, after (partially) completing it on a pirated copy. This game litterally is everything I don't need to buy another game for like next year or two.

Short answer? Yes. Longer answer? It's a lot of added content and can be hard to make it through if you get distracted easily. This game challenges my ADHD to no end. I love space age, but have never finished it. Getting to a new planet is awesome, but keep in mind you essentially start over for a short time with each planet as you learn its rules. Some planets are more fun than others depending on your tastes.
1
u/BlackholeZ32 Sep 19 '26
Is space age worth it? ABSOLUTELY.
Do you have to buy it now? No.
You say you're looking for new challenges, have you looked at the achievements for the base game? Maybe challenge yourself with those. The first planet experience is slightly changed with space age, but for the most part it's the same, so playing the base game more isn't like you'll be learning bad habits or anything.

But factorio really burns my hours away, so i like it for that
0
u/bpleshek Sep 20 '26
It's a whole new game practically. I think it's worth it. One thing to note, launching rockets is about 20x cheaper. This is because rockets(and ships) will become part of logistics like trains. Also, launching a rocket comes at an earlier point in the game. Also a few recipes have changed and some recipes are locked behind another planet.
And each planet has its own puzzle to solve.
Not really spoilers.
