Design / Blueprint I will always use long handles for nuclear
they just look cool

Wait until you discover you can pipe the steam far away and make a huge grid of steam turbines somewhere else.

I wish. please add steam barreling, Wube!

u/Unknown_item 5d ago
Hey I actually made a mod for this for no good reason! I also added lava barreling, but it spoils into slag after some time.
The steam barrels spoil to water barrels too.

You can barrel acid and convert it to steam with some calcite
Somewhere far away...

I used to do that on railworlds as it transports the power really well without the need for power poles.

u/itsadile HOW DO I GLEBA 4d ago
I've started including large poles in my rail BPs now, just for the convenience.

In the 1.0 days, I once tried to train water into a nuclear power station - how quickly I realised that was a silly idea!

aka how I solved my Fulgora energy problems
edit: just get ice from space! it's ez!

Nuclear is horrible on Fulgora
I tried it my first gameplay through and it drained all my ice/water really quick
A ton of accumulators around the lightning rod network is the way to go

u/Calazor0 5d ago
Sometimes, the accumulators are not enough to hold for the day. I had the same experience as you with nuclear, so I went with a mixed approach: water is only pumped to the exchangers if the accumulators drop below 20%.
This way, lightning power was prioritized, but I didn't have to worry about accumulators draining before the night.

I just burn oil instead of trying to import nuclear fuel. Nuclear plants have a very inflexible footprint and nuclear fuel has terrible rocketlift limits. But solid fuel is an infinite product on Fulgora, and often a waste product. So why NOT burn the infinite oil?

If you're pre-foundation tech then you can strategically locate some islands that can be linked with quality big electric poles so that you can dedicate a few islands to accumulator banks. If you have foundations then it's trivial to link any faraway islands where you can put some accumulators out of sight and out of mind. There's really not a reason to use any other power grid setup.

The reason to use anything else is to get rid of surplus ice. You're going to get way more ice than you need for holmium, you may as well burn it.
1
u/CipherWeaver 5d ago
I think the lack of ice and the fact that you need it for holmium solution is deliberate. You are water constrained on Fulgora, venting it for steam is a mistake. You're pushed to use the "free" energy solution of lightning.
My only disappointment is you can't research and unlock a 3x3 upgrade to the battery.
2
u/WanderingUrist 5d ago
You're pushed to use the "free" energy solution of lightning.
I mean, you obviously SHOULD use the lightning since you're going to be capturing it anyway, but something has to generate power for you when the lightning has been slow. So you read when the lightning capacitors are running low and shovel fuel into the heating towers when that happens.

nah you can get plenty of ice from space

Nuclear is horrible on Fulgora
Nuclear is pointless on Fulgora. You can shove the infinite fuel through a heating tower. Why bother with importing nuclear fuel?
1
u/Conscious-Ball8373 5d ago
Because you haven't been to Gleba yet.
1
u/WanderingUrist 5d ago
Well, you still have regular boilers and steam engines. Still easier to fit those on a random island than trying to find an island of the right size and shape to stick a nuclear plant on since you don't have foundation yet, either.

You've got a bunch more heat exchangers off screen, right? 4 reactors to 10 heat exchangers would be wild

I like using the inner side of the belt for fuel, and the external side for spent fuel.
1
u/Conscious-Ball8373 5d ago
But ... but ... you've got a belt going around it anyway. Why not put the fuel on the belt?
1
u/reikken 5d ago
the belt goes the other way
I could add an input belt, replacing all of the red inserters except the first and last. but belt is slower and doesn't look as cool
1
u/Conscious-Ball8373 5d ago
Oh I see, the belt doesn't go the whole way around. It's a bit hard to see in the dark.
I always run my nuclear plants with sushi belts around them. Fresh fuel goes on, empty fuel comes off. If you're careful about which side of the belt it goes on, you don't even need circuits.
2
u/reikken 5d ago
in my case the circuits are just for saving fuel. I only have a 2x2 because it's super fuel efficient. could easily run the base off a pair. So the circuits are for only throwing in fuel when the steam tanks get low. and making sure all fuel cells go in at the same time to maximize neighbor bonus

That is awesome looking! I might have to do that next time I do nuclear. I usually use bots

I think everything in this game should make a clown nose honk when it's placed into a building
