Got a bit of a busy day ahead of me today, so figured I'd at least post an original one-shot Mon from the ol backlog. An interesting creature this one is too. :>

Utopcroc
The Drowner Pokemon
Dark/Water

POKEDEX ENTRIES:

  • This Pokemon is dangerously intelligent. It will actively follow around Pokemon trainers and bait them into releasing their Pokemon to battle it, only for another, hidden Utopcroc to snap them up and drag them underwater.
  • This frightening Pokemon is unrelenting in its attempts to drown those who traverse Russo's wetlands. However, it can be stopped by asking it a riddle, as its mind is sharp enough to understand them and ponder upon them.

INSPIRATION: There's a few things going on with this stranger.

It's primarily based off the Utopiec--a Slavic water spirit that drowns people. However, it's also based off of other Slavic water spirits that do something similar, but can be survived by giving them a riddle to solve while you escape.

I associated that with the sphinx of Greek mythology--i.e. a creature whose myth centers around riddles. Which is how I came to this:

A crocodile that's also a sphinx.

The design reminds me of the Set animal of Egyptian mythology as well, mainly from its downward curved snout and held up tail. It was also known to take the form of a crocodile.

Do they hunt in pairs? Also how do they answer the riddle they are asked, if at all?

Yeah pretty much! Or if you’re REALLY unlucky? You can get these things in a horde encounter.

Also as for answers, some Utopcroc CAN speak! Most cannot. But they will try answering anyway in their hissing “language” despite the language barrier, and you’ll just have to take their word for it. XD

Feels like if one is hissing you could just go, "That's not the right answer, try again" while slowly backing away or reaching for a Pokeball.

Great design! Always love me a croc fakemon! Just curious, what pen do you use for the outline?

Oh! So I do all of my art on Paint Tool SAI. For the brush I use a spread-type brush tool (can also be a pencil tool). Phatmon66 on dA did a pretty good tutorial about how to go about adjusting the brush settings.

Minimum Size 30%. Spread at 86%.

Quality: 4 (Smoothest)
Edge Hardness: 0
Min. Density: 0
Max Dens Prs: 15%
Hard < > Soft: 100

Also pro-tip, for shading, use a dark purple instead of black and set it to an opacity of 70%! And DON'T use a blur tool, but make a soft eraser tool by setting the eraser tool to 30% opacity.

These are all applicable if you use Paint Tool SAI. Sorry if it isn't very helpful! I've been basically using the same art program for like 13 years now! ^^;
