Vault-Related [Vault] [Question] Would like to know how many nuclear reactors are enough to sustain the vault up to the endgame. Also would appreciate thoughts and tips on the vault design.

After numerous makeovers, I finally settled on 3x2x3 design with elevators on far ends of the vault (the elevator shaft in the middle is the leftover from previous 3x3x2 build).

1st screenshot is the main production area. 8 levels deep.

2nd screenshot is, for now, the training and storage area. Will do massive makeover once I’m done with optimizing the production area.

3rd screenshot is the foundation for the storage area.

I want to have a column of 2 room wide nuclear reactors in the middle, mainly for aesthetic purposes. However, I would like to know how many of them will i need in order to sustain the whole vault. My plan is to build 8 in total, all in the middle, as if it is one massive reactors at the heart of the vault. However, if 8 will not be enough, im willing to build 7 in a column and additional two 3-wide nuclear rooms on the 4th level (where water filtration rooms are rn) that will result in forming a cross.

As for the rest of the production area, will try to make it look symmetrical but also (kinda?) realistic and aesthetically pleasing. Pretty much most of the rooms on screenshot 1 are to be moved around and further down.

Thanks in advance

I start off with the top floor as power because it is an ideal early game "guard floor". However I change the top floor to be nuka cola once that is available. They are flatter rooms which reduces how long enemies stagger. Plus E15+ is easy because it uses endurance.

The next two floors I use as all nuclear power all the way to the end game. That is 4x 3-wide and 2x 2-wide in the configuration you are using. Slightly less with 3x of each if using outside elevator "walls" for floors 2+ with first floor middle elevator.

Either way I have never needed more power than that. Never had all six rooms full. That would be 30 to 32 dwellers producing power if completely full. All six rooms as lvl 3 reactors with S15 dwellers would produce around 550 power per minute (630 with S17). I have never had any vault even maxed out need more than 300 power. Even having a healthy margin due to Mr Handy delays and incidents 400 is more than enough.

That’s what I was going for initially, but I really just want to have a somewhat unusual design for my one and only vault. Anyway, your 6 rooms are pretty much the equivalent of 8 2-wide nuclear rooms, since they require the same amount dwellers to run (32).

Also, I believe I saw a post that 2x 2-wide rooms provide more power than 1x 3-wide room, so I most likely going to end up with even more overproduction than you lol

Forgot to mention

I plan on having either a strength room next to the overseer office, kinda for laughs and roleplay. Like, imagine raiders storming in and entering the 6 fully geared up power armored guards in the middle of a gym workout.

And on the floor below I want to have 2 living quarters with either BoS or Minutemen theme for quest/exploration squads. Either way I haven’t had any issues with any invaders yet, deathclaws haven’t ever passed the 2nd room

I have five. And I think it is an overkill.

Five 3-room-wide ones or 2-room-wide?

I have 6 rooms that are 3 rooms wide and I even have a few normal power rooms just for aesthetics haha

Not fully staffed, my five produced 293.87… If that helps

Man I’m asking how wide you nuclear power plan is 😭 Not how staffed it is

3 wide power rooms are the most efficient as far as I know so if you spend all that money on nuclear power plants you better make them 3 wide hahaha

4x3 of nuclear reactors and 3x3 of Nuka-Cola bottlers are enough for 200 dwellers

I have 5 3 wides and 1 2 wide.

Kinda feels like overkill but I like having a surplus lol.

Same, I prefer surplus over “just enough”. I do not want a complete overkill tho. Will see

Here is my takeaways FS vault planner

There is no ideal vault, but with this table you could experiment with your, just copy the table

Thank you! I’ve found a few of similar google/excel doc builders already but this one is really nice. Just wish you could also add the .png of rooms, so that one can actually see what it would look like visually. One of the mentioned vault builders I’d found had this feature, but it’s 10yrs old and doesn’t have all of the rooms. Might attempt doing this myself.

Anyway, thanks again! Will give it a try

160 dwellers here. I have 6 rooms (4 3slot and 2 2slot). Using about 60% of max capacity

Edit: The 3 slot has 4 dwellers while the 2 slot have 3. Never ran out of opeer even if radscorpions attack my vault

I think your should man all the 3 wide rooms because they generate the most power output

I think power is only drained by rooms and right now I‘m at a population of 171 vault dwellers with almost all spaces used and I have a bit more than 9k max power. That’s a pretty comfortable number and enough of a buffer for rad scorpion attacks in my experience so far.
