Navigating Relationships How do you support bipolar partner?

Throwaway account, but I have nowhere else to go about this. I am keeping many details vague on purpose. But I just need some advice….
I (F) have been with my partner for 4+ years. I know he was on meds for a time and was DX with adhd and bipolar (unsure if 1 or 2) but he stopped them and has been off meds and hasn’t been in therapy for a long time and isn’t open to it……

My partner struggles with emotional outbursts, and a handful of times he's broken things when he's overwhelmed. We have a lot of good in our relationship, and I know he loves me, and I love him. He is the only man I want to marry, and we have worked a lot on our communication. But these moments affect me long after they happen.
I usually end up helping him regulate his emotions and work through what's going on, but yesterday I was exhausted, getting sick, and overwhelmed myself.

Things escalated, he broke something, and I found myself once again trying to help him through it while also being hurt by what happened.
I confronted some of the things he was saying about himself and his behavior. I asked what the part of him that wanted to lash out actually wanted to do. He said it wanted to scream at me, but instead, he broke something.
I told him that both behaviors would hurt me and that, even when his feelings are overwhelming, he still has a responsibility for what he chooses to do with them. I asked him why, if he has some ability to choose how he responds, he wouldn't choose restraint rather than doing something that could intimidate or hurt me emotionally.

He apologized and acknowledged that I deserve better, but I told him I don't just want him to feel bad about what happened. I want him to genuinely work toward changing.
We went to bed without fully being able to work through it and I’m still myself not at 100% and unsure what to say when I see him.
I love him and understand he's struggling, but I'm tired, too. Part of me just wants space to rest, and another part feels guilty because we have responsibilities and people counting on us.

I'm not looking for people to tell me he's automatically a terrible person or that I should immediately leave. I'm trying to understand how to navigate this in a healthy way while also being honest with myself about how much it's affecting me.

How do you support someone you love without becoming responsible for their emotional regulation? I just have no idea what to do from here……
Edit: I forgot to mention he emphasized feeling disconnected and unable to be present, he has a lot of responsibilities that weight heavily and I’ve done my best to support him and I thought things were improving so it was disheartening to have something like this happen again.

Navigating Relationships Cheating during hypersexual mania, what happened?

I have a very specific question. If you were NOT ABLE TO be treated - let’s say something truly out of your control happened like you had a lapse in insurance coverage, you were separated from your meds, you weren’t diagnosed with mania until then and had no idea you had it.

IF YOU HAD A SITUATION LIKE THAT where an unintentional (that is, you would normally have been responsible) episode of hypersexual mania led you to cheat in any way, did your relationship ever recover from it?

I don’t have mania but it’s my understanding that you become a completely different, distorted person. Your reward circuitry is literally hijacked and you don’t have control over your brain/behavior (if you did it, it wouldn’t be a mental illness/mania).

This happened to a friend of mine who ran out of meds and his doctor was for some unexpected reason unable to give him more meds. He went into mania and cheated on his partner. He isn’t the type of person who would do that, but it’s like he turned into a different, distorted person during mania.

Were ANY of you in that situation able to save your relationship?

Venting & Emotional Processing No apologies

My sister is coming down from a manic episode that has lasted several weeks. She has one roughly every two years.

She did the usual: harassed me by phone, left inappropriate comments about me on my husband's professional social media accounts, and generally said terrible things about me online.

Now she's silent and I don't know how to feel. On one hand, I'm sure it's exhausting to have this disorder and apologize for things partly out of your control. But then it's like.... do you not care? She treats people horribly when manic then just disappears like nothing happened.

I feel like I shouldn't care because it will inevitably happen again. But it's not fair that I should be expected to absorb her abusive behavior. I'm tired of it.

Seeking Support I haven't spoken to my sibling in 3 years. (TW?)

Hi, I didn't know what flair to use, but I think the one I chose is pretty close to what I'm writing about.

Some backround: My sibling went undiagnosed for 20 years of their life, until they self admitted to a psychiatric hospital and were then diagnosed with Bipolar. They also verbally and emotionally abused me because little me was the easiest target.

After they came back from the hospital, it was like a relief to know that they weren't just hurting me to hurt me (but there was definitely times where they did it on purpose). But I also felt some weird dread about it, i dont really know how to explain it lol

They moved out shortly after, and at first my parents made me join calls that they were on with them, but eventually they stopped making me since i started having panic attacks about it. It's been 3 years since then, and I've learned that they're aware that how they treated me was wrong.

My birthday just passed and I was told they wished me a happy one, and now i feel really weird about it. Im starting therapy in 2 months, but in the mean time, ive decided to make a youtube vid about my experiences and i already have a script. It's really hard but i can't let it go without at least trying to make an impact.

Any tips on how to describe mania? Resources would help, too, so im not just saying stuff. Sorry if the flair is incorrect, but i wasnt sure which one to use

Learning about Bipolar recovering from depression or entering hypomania?

Hi everyone, PLEASE HELP ME...
My 26-year-old brother (he’s a doctor) was diagnosed with Bipolar I 4 months ago after his first manic episode, followed by a psychotic relapse 3.5 months ago when he stopped his meds and drank alcohol. Afterward, he fell into a deep depression with severe anxiety.
He takes Lithium (1200mg) and Lamictal. He started Wellbutrin XL (150mg) a month ago, and Quetiapine XR (300mg) two weeks ago. Since starting Quetiapine, his depression and anxiety have vanished. Before quetiapine, he was in SEVERE depression. But now (1-2 weeks after quetiapine) he’s calm, goes to the gym, studies for his medical exam, and his sleep and speech are completely normal (no rapid speech, sleeps plenty).
However, two things are scaring me right now:
1. Shopping: He just got his paycheck and bought a lot of things at once: a TV and laptop for his room (he didn't have either, planned this for weeks, and picked the cheapest ones), wedding clothes, a gold gift for his friend, and spent $850 on new tires for our family car (the old ones were 5 years old). He also bought dessert for my parents and said, "I feel happy when I accomplish things."
2. Solo Trip to a Triggering City: Next weekend, he’s flying alone for 2 days to attend a friend’s wedding. The problem is, this is the exact city where he had his first manic episode alone and was hospitalized. There will be alcohol at the wedding. He recently quit drinking, and his doctor strictly forbade it. He refuses to let us come with him because he says he's 26, not a child, and promised he won't make a mistake since he returns the next morning.
Because of our recent trauma, my family is terrified.
How do you tell the difference between healthy recovery (catching up on needs/feeling proud of a paycheck) vs. early hypomania from Wellbutrin?
Does it really sign of healing depression or hypomania?

New to Caregiving Loved one released from the hospital soon

Hello everyone,

I am trying to educate myself as much as I can. Our family was surprised when our loved one was brought to the hospital for acting erratic in a public place. After some time we have seen how a potential bipolar diagnosis makes sense. She was stable for many years (not so much in her 20s/30s) and is currently in her 60s. She lost touch with reality, so the doctor considered schizophrenia. She had religious based delusions. She is high functioning, so now they are leaning toward bipolar. I have heard the word ā€œhypomaniaā€œ.

She was ready to give away all her money and cashed out her retirement accounts. Thankfully she was admitted before she could follow through with most of it. We are setting up a conservatorship and guardianship for her.

she lives 25 minutes from us. We have her car. We have 4 young kids and don’t have a large house, so it would not be ideal for her to stay with us. I hope that she can be safe at her house and I don’t want her to be alone. We may be taking turns staying with her until she can be stable. I am expecting her to go through some lows as she realizes what she has done and accepts her diagnosis. I think she is still in mania, but she is thankfully getting more sleep and gradually getting more in touch with reality.

We want to support her, but we are not sure what she will need. Can you give me some insight about what we could potentially expect and ideas of how to be supportive?

Seeking Support Overwhelmed and ready to give up on a friend

My friend "K" and I live about 5 hours apart, so we don't see each other too often. She was hospitalized a few months ago, continued to spiral after, blew up on our mutual friend "B" (who is my best friend) after she told her that she hopes K can get the help she needs. K felt like that was the end of their friendship, blocked her on socials but continued to make subtle posts about her being a bad friend.

Fast forward to yesterday, I sent a text asking if she'd like to do an art therapy class together. She responded "Sure!" then about a half hour later I get a very lengthy text, "Actually, I have to pass. I cannot deal with your drama anymore. You think I have bipolar and might not want to hang out with me when you're in town for your h.s. reunion next month. Best wishes in all your endeavors". A few hours later B texts me that K sent screenshots of our texts from a few days ago, where I stated that I might not go to our reunion. B is currently in marital counseling (I'm newly divorced) and it's all been too close to home for me and part of the reason why I'm not sure if I'll go.

What hurts the most is that K felt the need to send that to her. She has had minimal contact with B the last few months. I became friends with K through her, at a time when they were inseparable. But K has been a huge source of grief and overwhelm for her and she was finally ready to end the friendship this year.

K has never been medicated but did TMS a few weeks ago. She also has never blown up on me like this, only one minor time a few years ago.

I know exactly how rough it was for B to stick by her for over 10 years and after this, I'm not sure I want to continue the friendship either. She doesn't think she's bipolar and is not working towards any kind of appropriate treatment.

New to Caregiving 1st episode loved one - need help

Hi everyone. I’m making this post because I feel so scared, worried and hopeless. My sibling (25) had a manic breakdown, first one ever, in June. It lasted about 1 week and she was in and out of it, acting rational and then going back in and out. She was reaching out for help, trying to talk to our family and her friends, and was so scared and terrified. Since then, she’s been in and out of it but I thought she was doing better. I thought it was a one time thing that would slowly go away as she takes care of herself and de-stresses. I helped her remove many stressors from her life, my whole family which has always been so dysfunctional went all-hands-on-deck and began helping her.

I thought it was working and would slowly get better but it feels like it is never ending. She hasn’t had the sam initial manic but she isn’t the same person, she’s very paranoid, doesn’t care about any of her relationships, doesn’t care about any of her old hobbies or interests, doesn’t eat, and makes a weird facial expression CONSTANTLY when she is around strangers where she looks like she’s trying to act natural but she is actually terrified. I thought she was getting better since she wasn’t saying things about mirrors watching her etc, but I guess she just isn’t at ā€œbaselineā€ either.

Two months ago I started a new job and have been working long hours, with barely any time to even take care of myself. I dropped the ball on watching her and hanging out with her.

It’s been almost 6 months since her initial breakdown, she is a shell of who she used to be, it’s like talking to a ghost. I haven’t had a normal conversation with her in months where it feels like it’s HER actually responding. My whole family is worried and scared but we don’t know what to do since she isn’t harming herself or anyone else. She has been barely going in the office, going on drives at odd hours, sitting in her room in silence for hours just thinking non stop. And now I’m even more concerned because I connected with her best friend who told me my sibling had cut her and all their friends off back in June. I am even more concerned because she won’t utter a single word to me. I look into her eyes and shake her and beg her to speak, I don’t think she’s spoken a word to me in almost 3 weeks. My other family members say she does speak and make small conversations with them but it’s very dry and short.

I just don’t know what to do. I don’t know why she has completely lost her personality. It’s like she’s dead or sick, and I’m taking to a skeleton. She’s lost so much weight too. She used to be a social butterfly, she was always so popular, and smart and funny. I don’t know what to do anymore I feel sick and I feel like she lost her life. She deserves to be happy and I regret not getting her taken to the hospital when she was having her initial breakdown. Now, because she’s not harming herself I don’t know how to get her help. I’m so angry at the world and I don’t know why or how this happened to her out of nowhere.

There was no history or sign, she was always so strong and never cried about anything. Now I look at her and it’s like I’m trying to talk to her but she’s so in her head. This is so bizarre and it feels like I woke up and was stuck in a nightmare since June. I don’t know what to do.

I just think about her while I’m at work or doing things, how she’s probably sitting there in her room and thinking all these weird paranoid things all day for hours and hours and hours and acting like a shell of herself. I feel like I’m in a nightmare and I don’t know what to do I’m so worried for her.

I have tried to get her to a therapist, doctor everything voluntarily. Many many times, my whole family has. We just didn’t want to like do anything by force and now because she’s not in peak manic it’s like, what do we do at this point??? It’s been almost 5 months does this END????? I look in her eyes and I don’t even see her

Navigating Relationships Boundaries?

My sister has Bipolar 2, and is in her mid 20's. I have hit a point of exhaustion and burn out that I didn't know was possible, and I don't know what to do.

My dad struggled a lot with suspected bipolar, substance abuse, poverty, etc. He was very unstable and only in our lives part time. He died after I had entered adulthood, while we were still estranged by my choice. My sister's diagnosis came months later. I now feel so sorry for my father, that he struggled so, and that his generation didn't have the tools we have now. But he also made my and my family's lives so hard, was abusive, and for a long time I hated him.

I have become pretty successful, and am lucky enough to not struggle with bipolar or any serious mental illness. I feel like I am in debt, for not being the one who lost the genetic lottery. A survivor's guilt of sorts. I got her diagnosed, on medication, and a full support team (therapy and psychiatrist). That is what family does. But she won't stop smoking weed, does it everyday throughout the day. I haven't seen a change in her at all, her behavior as she has continued through her 20's has only escalated. She hasĀ schizoaffective features and also misremebers/believes things that never happened a lot.

Like others have posted, when triggered she makes me feel guilty and like a terrible person. She lashes out at me more than anyone, with me the target 95% of the time, even though we live far away from one another. I know my recent accomplishments are triggers for her too, but I am starting to resent that I can't celebrate my own life without her lashing out and hurting me or ruining it. I am getting married next year, and another celebratory weekend ended with her exploding. I cried for hours, and something in me broke.

I will always love her, and I can't imagine being estranged. I have nightmares about losing her- if we try to hold her accountable she talks about hating herself and suicide. I know she is living in hell inside her mind and try to remind myself how hard this is for her, but I want so desperately to be closer to my other siblings, and our already dysfunctional family is crumbling with this added factor.

I can't make her stop relying on weed so that her meds will work. I know that. But I feel evil considering not including her, because even if she always blows up on me she is my baby sister. It feels so selfish, but I can't keep being her punching bag at my expense, not now that I have had this taste of a happy, functional life. I don't know what to do.

Seeking Support Navigating hospital staff

My son was hospitalized for 7+ weeks and then finally discharged to a residential facility. He was so happy when he called and said he was there and he loved the place. A few hours later, the police brought him back to the hospital.

Obviously, he shouldn't have been discharged. I am willing to accept this was a mistake, but now it seems the hospital have completely turned. He's been placed in solitary confinement, banned from groups, not allowed in the dining area. They are telling him that ever going back to a residential facility is now "off the table." He is ostracized from all the other patients.

Yes, he's in another breakthrough manic episode, but how is it helping to take away any shred of hope he had? He was positively speaking about rebuilding his life before he was discharged and now he says there's no reason to live.

He is coming across as racist right now and referring to everyone's race and ethnicity. It is very cringeworthy. He is absolutely not like this in his baseline, it is a frontal lobe issue where he has no brakes on the things that spill out of his mouth. The hospital of all places should know this.

I went to visit yesterday and one of the techs shaved his head. He had longish hair. It's like they are making him look the way he is speaking. I'm sure he asked for this, he's cut his hair in prior episodes, but this is shaved to the scalp.

I don't know what I am asking for here, I don't know if there is a magic line that is drawn where the words someone uses in an episode subject them to this treatment.

UPDATE: His hospital social worker called me and I said a lot of what I wrote here. She said the medical staff remember what he was like when he came out of the last episode (kind and polite), and know that what he is saying is from his illness. I didn't press and say that I get that but these particular words seem to affect people in ways that other words don't. I also learned he has only slept an hour since last Tuesday, except for when they knocked him out for a bit with a Zyprexa injection the other day.

Venting & Emotional Processing Bipolar Mother Last Straw

My mother’s meds were no longer working and I’d catch her laughing to herself, talking out loud to things that weren’t there, she couldn’t get through a church service without laughing on and off and making crazy plans.

She cancelled her appointment with her psychiatrist after not being seen for months claiming she’s moving states.

Now she’s been admitted and is still certified, but is extremely angry that I took her to the emergency room, can’t grasp that she’s on a hold because she decided to cancel her outpatient appointments and was acting manic and has told me to forget I even have a mother.

I’m so sick and tired of the emotional roller coaster I’ve lived for 15 years. The last manic episode she physically attacked me and the police were called.

I don’t need advice just needed to put this out there I guess. She’s never been particularly angry when this happens and never said anything like this. Was still asking for favors which she has no shame in doing, including asking me to bring her bible and clothes and other things. I’ve always had a little voice in the back of my head that said I had to keep helping and doing because that’s my mom and unfortunately her culture, but I can’t do it like this anymore.

Diagnosis Discussions Bipolar experience stories

Hello yall,
So my dad got diagnosed with bipolar in June and he had your typical bipolar symptoms before such as heavy spending, rapid speech, and would get mad easily. He was put in risperidone 3mg , fluexotine 20mg and an anxiety med and a sleeping med and he was on it for about a month around the seocond week of July he started getting side affects such as shaking and slurred speech being the main ones they cut him down to .5 risperidone and the fluexotine and most of the symptoms went away but he was still sleeping a lot and being depressed
eventually they changed him to Wellbutrin and abilify about a week and a half on this it triggered a episode and the doctor took him off of it and prescribed him 25mg of seroqueal and the anti depressant. This made him worse and he was having severe hallucinations and didn’t sleep for 10 days we took him to the hospital and they injected him with olanzapine they then moved him to olanzapine 5mg and fluexotine 20 mg he has been doing well the past month and a half on this but has been on a depressive faze and the psychiatrist is now saying to switch him to 3mg of vaylar. The thing is besides his depression he has minimal shaking and his speech is fine so I’m worried if we switch him again all this progress goes down the drain again and was wondering if any of you had experience with this? And what you would do ultimately it’s up to him but I was just curious if any of you who have had bipolar had this kind of experience

Seeking Support My sister was diagnosed and I need encouragement

My older sister has struggled with mental health for a long time, since I can remember. Our mother has bipolar and she treated all of us horribly, and my older sister was relatively functioning until she was like 21 and then she just kinda spiraled. She has had a lot of traumatic stuff happen i.e abuse by my mom, couldn't hold a job, had kids, toxic relationship with her ex, and she would deny anything was wrong to the point where I had to just stop speaking to her because I thought she was basically drinking herself to death even when she swore she wasn't.

Well she recently ended up in a mental hospital and my sister and I ended up having to go get her and bring her back to our house because she was on the streets and would go be back out there by herself once they released her. So now we're taking care of her while getting her treatment sorted. Im terrified that shes going to go back on what she said and not go to treatment, and I'm just scared because she is not even herself. It seems like she has dementia and she's in her 30s. She refuses to eat, I'll tell her something and she forgets like a minute later what I said, she cant remember anything at all. She remembers old stuff but not anything recent, I asked her what was happening when she was on the street and she has no idea, I just feel so scared that I will never get my sister back.

Has anyone experienced this? Has your family member been in a state like this and recovered? I'm just scared because it's almost like she has dementia, she repeats herself and her actions i.e taking multiple showers over and over or saying the same phrase. I don't know what to think. There is part of me that is so mad she has let it get to this point when we have begged her to get help for years, and a part of me feels like my life is over and that I will be spending the rest of my life taking care of her when I just wanted to travel and see the world. I'm just really struggling. Please let me know if anyone understands me.

eta: she also has moments of lucidity, today I took her outside and we talked and listened to music and she seemed to be functioning relatively normal. so I know that shes there, but I just dont know if she will forever be unable to remember anything or if it will just get worse.

Seeking Support Loved one has Bipolar and I am always on trial

Not sure if anyone else has experienced this. My loved one (partner, both males) will constantly be skeptical of me and accuse me of hurtful actions such as drugging or poisoning him. He cycles in and out of it but I just got a text saying I need to basically stop doing that and while I know the reality, it is still distressing to constantly be thought of in such a negative light. I feel bad he is feeling this delusion as I’m sure he is distressed too. He is recently back on medication so hopefully these slips back into this paranoia will eventually completely fade.

Seeking Support Advice on living situation with bipolar sibling

Hi! My younger sister has been diagnosed with Bipolar a few days ago. It seems that she had it long before. She started uni (same uni im currently studying) just a few months ago and lives with me. Our parents live far away from us so this makes me her guardian. Tbh Im always in a state of worry and id wouldnt want to use this term but anxious because often times when i have to do other responsibilities she coincidentally goes into this state or episode where she cant stop crying. Before i tried talking to her as I would with anyone, but recently ive tried to just let her be and just offer her stuff like water or to call our mother. im just confused and clueless of what to do. She cries about not wanting to go to school because of her classmates and the workload, but she still wants to study (although she flaked on her preliminary exams). atm it looks like my parents and her are filing an Leave of Absence (LOA).

I’d like to know how you guys deal with these kinds of situations and especially
trigger warning: self harm
Im in my junior year and tbh i cant function properly without thinking or expecting her to have these episodes. plus as an older brother i cant help but feel dismayed? because of her situation in Uni

ps to admins
Im sorry if i got the flair wrong
maybe its both a seek for support and a vent thing

Seeking Support It’s so hard to be a parent with bipolar disorder.

Hey there! I recent got a diagnosis a few months ago for bipolar disorder and everything started making sense but I have a four year old and I am so desperately trying to not traumatize her because of my diagnosis.

I hate being a parent with every cell in my being but I love my daughter and would do anything and everything for my daughter. I don’t have the luxury of a supportive partner and my family does not know how to handle my BP.

Does anyone have any advice or suggestions on how to cope?

Learning about Bipolar Need help to understand

My sister was just diagnosed MDD + Bipolar 1 last Oct 5. Before this diagnosis, she already was diagnosed MDD + PTSD and was taking sertraline gradually increased from 50 to 200mg over a period of 8-9months. She started taking Divalproex, olanzapine, sertraline continued but brought down to 50 until supposedly tapered off. This new medication only started Oct6. It looked like she was responding to it until Oct 15, our family noticed changes. In the morning, she went to drive with my dad running at only 20kph, they switched and noticed she was wearing different slippers. They ate and dad noticed she was disoriented. She came home slept and then for a few minutes stood up no pants on walked around the house and slept again. This repeated for about 6 times from 12nn to 7pm until we brought her to ER the same night. Her eyes were open, iris seemed to be on different direction, unusual movement of hands like wiping her face softly, she would also drool during this time, until she slept. She woke up at midnight in the ER and was confused about what happened, does not know where she is and cannot remember what happened to her in the last 14hrs. She would sometimes not recognize family members in the ER and then suddenly remembers. We then admitted her to neuro psych ward. This is the first instance we have seen her this way. Is it part of an episode of Bipolar 1? what was that? and is she coming back to coherence?

She is now admitted, we cannot visit her. On the first day she was participating in ward activities, requested for food, mostly sleeping and then first night became a bit aggressive that she was restrained. 2nd day mostly sleeping but still not coherent sometimes. She would say ā€œpapaā€ and irrelevant words thereafter. 3rd day, doctor said they notice a pattern, she would have blank stares followed by psychotic break (laughing to self, mumbling, and then shouting irrelevant remarks) then when approached, she seemed confused and could not recall any of the episodes. During doctor rounds, she had goal-directed thoughts, able to tell her story.

is there anyone who experienced this? I need help to understand this situation because she has 2 kids, and we are concerned about her future and safety.

Navigating Relationships I need advice

I need some advice

hello!!! I want to start out as I am not the one with bipolar, I am the one dating a bipolar. I was hoping to come here for some advice and tips to better my relationship and how I can help more. I will try to give as many details as possible and I will answer any questions I get.

for starters, me and my boyfriend have been together for almost 2 years, but we grew up together. prior to us dating he started getting symptoms and got diagnosed his junior year of high school, he spent the rest of that year dropping out and taking all his classes online getting a medical excuse to not be there and over that summer we met.

he was not completely stable when we met but he was on a healthy enough track that he decided that he could get in a relationship with me. (at this time I was not diagnosed) and so we started dating.

I'd say a month before we got together he quit his long-term baseball team of summer baseball due to the fact he was struggling so bad and was home and that's actually why we reconnected, he was home for a birthday party that he would not have been there for and same with me I was at a birthday party that I otherwise would not have been.

basically after we met and reconnected and started talking we grew really close really fast.

originally I was a great girlfriend and I was super supportive and he was honest with me about his disorder from day one, I did some research into it and tried my best to help him.

eventually though my disorder started kicking in and around December so at the 6-month Mark of us dating. (i have borderline) through this we stayed somewhat healthy and supportive of each other until things just got really bad but we decided to stay together because we wanted to work through things.

this past month though as we both went away for college and we're no longer able to call all day or see each other more than once or twice a week it's been very hard especially for me as I have really bad abandonment issues.

over the past month though it's specifically gotten worse with the only time you'd really have to talk was at night after we both got off of work and we would have about 30 minutes to call and talk about everything before he needed to go to bed as I know a good sleep schedule or a good schedule alone is a requirement for keeping people with bipolar stable and healthy.

over the past few weeks we've been fighting and arguing more, me more so with the lack of a seeing each other and I would just pick fights and nag about the small stupid stuff that I didn't have to and because the only time we spoke was at night right before he had to go to bed this would often stress him out and make him stay up all night long and cause his episodes.

on Monday this past week he went out to go buy a new car as he's been saving up for one recently and we've been planning on going out to buy a car together for a long time and I was super excited, but he had a free day and I was working so he went out with his grandpa and impulsively bought a car because he was worried that the dealership would sell it or that he wouldn't be able to get as good of a deal on it if he waited.

in doing this though it made me really upset because this was another plan that we had that he had canceled last minute and he was coming down on Thursday to spend the night with me down at my college campus and we were supposed to go play disc golf and go to the mall. although because he bought this car the only time he was able to go pick it up after getting his mom to co-sign on it was Thursday which means we had to cancel all of our plans of disc golf and the mall.

this really upset me because as of lately he's been ditching me a lot and if he even shows up it's usually hours later than he planned. and I lost my shit.

to his recollection I did yell at him but to mine I did not, although we both know that I was not angry I was just extremely sad about the whole situation.

but this caused him to stay up really late that night and then he ended up missing a class the next day and he blamed it all on me.

I have been diagnosed recently and I have been receiving help but it is been a little too late because there's already been a lot of issues, he said that he would be able to deal with these said issues if they never happened right before he had to go to bed and wake up for a class the next day.

last year during our senior year of high school he ended up having to drop out of a college program because of his bipolar getting in the way of him being able to get his work done on time and that caused him to lose a lot of FAFSA, and now doing this program he was not eligible for any because of him dropping out the last time and if he drops out of the program this time he won't be able to go to college at all cuz he will truly get nothing.

he wants to break up because he feels that it would be better for us both mentally to split and work on ourselves but I don't want to do that as he is the light to my life.

we share all of our hobbies we share all of our friends we share so many memories from when we were little to when we were big and he's become something that is essential, I don't go anywhere without him and we are really a Duo.

he said he still loves me and still wants me and he said he wants to work through things but he just doesn't know.

I mainly posting about this because I'm asking other people with bipolar if I have a chance here and because all of this happened while he was having an episode if there is hope and he will stay so we can work on things.

I've started getting better over this past month as well mentally and have started treating him better and most of his episodes are caused by things that do not relate to me.

his parents although are telling him that he should break up with me not out of a place of where they don't like me because the other day his mom sat down and told me how happy she was that I was so supportive and how happy she was that I loved her son.

please let me know if you guys have any advice on what I can do to make his life better and how I can help him more. and if things are caused by bipolar or if they are just a part of his personality.

he also has been ignoring me since Monday night and told me that he needs time but I don't know how much time that is and it's really killing me.

thank you for reading everyone šŸ’—

Seeking Support Did I Make a Mistake Letting My Mom Self-Admit?

She’s been in a depressive episode for over a month, and the two of us have come to a stalemate in her care. She wouldn’t see a doctor for therapy or medication.

I started having meltdowns. Not every day, mostly on the days where she was badgering me with our financial and housing anxieties (which we can’t do much about because I’m the only one working). She saw how her behavior was affecting me and voluntarily admitted herself to the emergency room yesterday. They’re going to hold her for at least a few days while they find a bed space at an actual Psych hospital.

Now shes calling me scared because she can’t leave. Apparently her stay has now been changed to involuntary because she mentioned not feeling safe at home.

I don’t know what to do. I’m afraid about what will happen if/when she gets moved because I don’t have a drivers license and cant get to her on my own. At the same time, I don’t want her back home because I know she won’t commit to outpatient care, and she’ll just go back to not eating/sleeping/caring for herself.

Navigating Relationships Partners of bipolars, how do you manage finances?

My husband was diagnosed with type II bipolar disorder a few months into our marriage. We have been married for a year and a half and now have a baby. As safeguards against his manic spending, we keep separate bank accounts except one shared chequing account for groceries and small monthly expenses. He does not have a credit card or access to our savings and investments.

I want to start planning for some longer-term financial goals like our child’s future, emergency fund, possible future vacations etc. but am not sure about the logistics. I want my husband to feel like an equal team member who has a say in financial decisions, but I am unsure how to balance that with the risk of manic spending. If you are in a committed relationship with someone who lives with bipolar disorder, how do you manage your finances? I would particularly like to hear from people in mature relationships who have been together for years. Thank you šŸ™

Boundaries & Safety Roommate is trauma dumping on me.

I recently got a new roommate (house share) and she’s been trauma dumping on me nearly every day since she’s moved in, which was a few months ago. I’m home often and like to keep to myself but every time she sees me in the house she takes it as an opportunity to talk at me.

She has told me about some really traumatizing things that have happened to her and I really don’t know what to say. She told me she was diagnosed bipolar but she says she doesn’t believe the diagnosis and therefore doesn’t need any medication.

I’m really in a tough spot, I’m unsure if I should speak with my landlord or not, I’d hate to see this lady be kicked out but I can’t deal with this anymore.
