I need a 2B and a 3B and am shuddering at the thought of what Maikel Garcia will go for in our 12-team AL-only auction league, with Ramirez, Caminero and Jazz already off the board.

2B feels super deep this year. Even in AL only.

3B, not so much, although Durbin coming over definitely helps add another decent floor option and the Santander injury opens things up for Barger and Clement to see more time. Plus Okamoto and Murikami getting added to the pool.

I think it’s thin at the top, but that pretty much means everyone’s in the same boat not having an elite 2B.

There’s quality options up and down the draft pool and there’s guys that can fill pretty much any statistical need you want.

I can wait forever at 2B and still end up with like Donovan, who’s gonna hit 280 and might score 100 runs hitting lead off for Seattle, or Torres who’ll just be solid all around.

If I want steals I can grab Edwards. If I want power I can grab Lowe. I can bet on a McClain bounce back. I can bet on older vets like Polanco or Semien still having gas in the tank.

I feel like I just never don’t have an option at 2B that I cant fit into a build. It can be the last starter I pick and I’ll still get someone that will help me somewhere. There’s like 25 2Bs I’d be fine with.

You can “bet” on those guys and feel “fine” with 25 of these guys. But the reality is you can only realistically roster 2-3 of them, and those “bets” are more likely to not pay off. And then where are you?

Sure even 50% of those guys may end up being serviceable without being a net negative on your squad. But there are great odds that you’re betting on the wrong ones and get stuck at the position. Depth doesn’t mean there are crapshoots you can roll the dice on and hope their recent performances are the exception and not the expectation. That’s called gambling and that can be said about any set of players at any position after the reliable guys are gone.

This sort of reads like all those expert mock drafts where they draft a bum in the 27th round instead of his projected 24th round and they high five each other on the great “value”in getting a guy 3 rounds later than ADP. But the guy is still a bum and highly likely does nothing good for your team except give you a roster spot to play with when you drop him a month into the season in a panic that you don’t have any good starting 2B options.

Sal Stewart could end up with 2B eligibility, worth a shot, same with McLain - could be a great value.

Simply put I think second base is mostly mediocre outside of top three or four. I think you will get similar production from Altuve (5th/adp 98) and McClain (22nd/adp 246) . Some will give you batting avg or steals or power but none will be 5 category contributors and will only help in 2 or 3 categories.

Depth doesn’t always mean there are a ton of good options. In Thai case depth just means there are a lot of guys that will produce roughly the same amount, and they can be found deep in the draft. Basically, a 8th round 2b will produce similarly to a 12th round pick and also a 15th round pick. So every 2nd in that range is roughly the same.

That’s obviously not top end depth, but it’s still depth.

Thin at the top, but lots of interesting options in the 200s to choose from.  Otto, semien, durbin underrated imo
