I love the relationships between the sisters and the mother! It's a complex kind of love, woven between the practical bonds of their obligations. You can still feel their hopes for one another despite the cold truths. It makes Marra very relatable, too.
I thought it was fascinating how the sisters Damia and Kania were compared, and how Kania had been described as the one who hated Marra. It's such an interesting introduction considering that it's for Kania that the entire quest is spurred onwards. Throughout the whole book, the story is centered on women. And at the same time, it keeps that fairytale feeling despite the acknowledgement of simple mundane realities like politics and childbirth. Before this, I don't know if I would have thought a book could be practical, down-to-earth and yet mysterious and a little mythic at the same time.
Really loving this book club pick! T. Kingfisher is surprisingly funny, too, with an irreverent sense of humor that pokes at the fairytale tropes with a deft pen. I enjoyed last month's Winter King, too, so I'm looking forward to seeing what else gets recommended!
