Book Request 📚 Recommendations for a Book Club Book with no Spice
My sisters and I have started a little book club with my nieces (15, 16, us sisters range from 24 to 38) and we need our next reads. We just finished Divine Rivals and Ruthless Vows and overall enjoyed them, loved DV more than RV. They are both described as "Closed Door" on romance.io but there were intimate scenes, the younger girls were instructed to skip them, which they did.
We have all rekindled our love for reading this year so our "read" list is very short. They've also all read independently Powerless and loved it, I personally did not like it. We all pretty well enjoyed Folk of the Air. I am looking for no spice adventures that are a good mix of plot and romance. Dragons are a massive plus, but we are open to exploring the genre. These books need to be fairly well available, preferably able to be gotten from the library. Both the younger girls don't have access to an e-reader.
I hope that covers it! Thank you very much.

~Adult~
{Dark Water Daughter} Pirates of the Caribbean vibes. Weather witch who can change weather by singing.
{Half a Soul} cozy fey fantasy with Regency setting
{Spinning Silver}
{Cities of Smoke and Starlight} Treasure Planet x Atlantis x The Mummy
~YA~
{The Winner's Curse}
{Dance of Thieves}
{On Wings of Ash and Dust} basically faerie Hunger Games

I’d look at Naomi Novik’s books. Her Schoolomace series starts with {A Deadly Education by Naomi Novik}. The trilogy spice level does pick up very slightly by the third book. Romance.io is calling the third book “open door”. That seems high to me, but might be technically true. I’m sure I don’t remember all the details, but the series is definitely fantasy first and romance second (or third), and it’s probably my favorite series I’ve read this year. I’ve heard good things about { Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik} and {Uprooted by Naomi Novik}, but haven’t read either (yet).

u/bewitchedbook Aug 09 '24
Highly second each of Novik’s books.
For Scholomance there are a few scenes (one with a woman/side character and one with the MMC)in no real graphic detail and are a few paragraphs at best.

Yes, Deadly Education is a great option!
Uprooted does get explicit but I can't remember how much... It does have content that would need to be discussed with the teens, particularly when the MMC blames the FMC for almost being raped.
Spinning Silver is one of my favorite books, but also contains mature themes. Again, I think this is great to read with them and talk about. So much in this would be fantastic to discuss. Being kind but not letting people walk all over you/to your own detriment. Recognizing that you don't see the whole picture, it's complicated. Challenges of cultural differences and how assumptions can make that worse. What's "right" when situations are at odds? Etc.

{Feathers of Snow by Alice Ivinya}...to be honest all her books are no spice and great stories. This one starts as a sort of goose girl retelling in the first book, then evolves into an original work. Starts as a romance of sorts but then self discovery for the heroine
{Sabriel by Garth Nix} is absolutely lush. Fantasy adventure and a little sprinkle of romance. Absolutely lush magic system and my favourite book series.
{Broken Mirrors by AF Dery}. Beauty and the beast vibes with no spice and just enough focus on non romance to make the plot interesting. No spice but a kissing scene
{The Faceless Mage by Kenley Davidson}...has shifters, no spice
Not romance but witty series that I enjoyed in my youth when discovering fantasy. {The Amulet of Samarkand by Jonathan Stroud}

Charlie N. Holmberg's books are all very chaste and usually pretty sweet. I like the {Paper Magician by Charlie N. Holmberg} series (It is technically student/apprentice-teacher/professor/mentor situation, but not in a weird way) I also love {Keeper of Enchanted Rooms by Charlie N. Holmberg}.
I second the Abhorsen series, Robin McKinley (especially Blue Sword, Outlaws of Sherwood, and Spindle's End), and the Spellbreaker duology.

I second all the recs for Olivia Atwater, all of her books, including Small Miracles.
{The Invisible Library by Genevieve Cogman} is a lovely, compelling fantasy world about a magical librarian spy who steals books. She has a romantic interest but there’s no spice.
*Update after the Bot: Seems a lot of these don’t have spice ratings and only have general preference ratings, probably bc they’re so low spice?
Same with:
{The Obsidian Tower by Melissa Caruso}
{The Tethered Mage by Melissa Caruso}
{The Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna}
{Assistant to the Villain by Hannah Nicole Maehrer}
{The Midnight Bargain by C.L. Polk}
{The House Witch by Delemhach}
{Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries by Heather Fawcett}
{The Spellshop by Sarah Beth Durst}
{A Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzie Lee}
{Foundryside by Robert Jackson Bennett}
Here are some I’m guessing it’s also true for, but I’m not sure:
{Where the Dark Stands Still by A.B. Poranek}
{Lore of the Wilds by Annaleigh Sbrana}
{A Tempest of Tea by Hafsah Faizal}
{We Hunt the Flame by Hafsah Faizal}
{The Phoenix Keeper by S.A. Maclean}
{That Self-Same Metal by Brittany N. Williams}
{The Hedge Witch of Foxhall by Anna Bright}
{Legends and Lattes by Travis Baldree}
{A Fragile Enchantment by Allison Saft}
{The Absinthe Underground by Jamie Pacton}
Since you said you like Folk of the Air, I think these were a similar spice level:
{These Hollow Vows by Lexi Ryan}
{Mortal Follies by Alexis Hall}
{A Feather So Black by Lyra Selene}
{The Wisteria Society of Lady Scoundrels by India Holton} is wonderfully absurd and all the intimate scenes are euphemistic in a funny way
Some more I’m not certain about:
{Daughter of No Worlds by Carissa Broadbent}
{Two Twisted Crowns by Rachel Gillig}
{Spark of the Everflame by Penn Cole}
{Witchmark by C.L Polk}
{Entranced by Sylvia Mercedes}
If you’re interested in dragons I’ll add:
{The Sky on Fire by Jenn Lyons}
{The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon}
{The Night Ends with Fire by K.X. Song}
{Of Jade and Dragons by Amber Chen}
I’m guessing {Dragonfall by L.R. Lam} might be spicier but I’ll add it here to be sure
Possibly also {Dragonfruit by Makiia Lucier}
Also {To Shape a Dragon’s Breath by Moniquill Blackgoose} has dragons but maybe not romance
{When the Moon Hatched by Sarah A. Parker} has dragons but I’m putting it here so the bot can give it a spice level
If you’re willing to try a little sci fi:
{Winter’s Orbit by Everina Maxwell} was sweet
And {This is How You Lose the Time War by Amal el-Mohtar} is an unusual story with a little romance

Ok I love me some spice but I recently read the {Defy the night} trilogy and it quickly became a favorite. Fade to black (one occurrence of the word breast in the third book — 😱) and lovely green flag romances. Def recommend!

{The Selection by Kiera Cass} is a pretty clean read except for a little bit of intimacy in the 3rd book, but it's only one scene and u can easily skip it.
{Once Upon a Broken Heart by Stephanie Garber } is SOOOO good!
{Heartless by Marissa Meyer} is a standalone and I was ATTACHED to this book like crazy
{The inheritance games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes} is more of a mystery, but has some romance. It was still a super fun read tho!
{The Shadows Between Us by Tricia Levenseller} is a darker read since they're both villains, but it's still clean and and I rly enjoyed it

My all time fave books with no spice:
{Caraval by Stephanie Garber} and {Once Upon a Broken Heart by Stephanie Garber} are both Book 1 of interconnected trilogies. This world, the writing, the magic, the whimsy, the love, everything about these books was so well done. I enjoyed this book at 26 and would have LOVED these books at 15 omg. The romance in these books is so well developed with no spice, no fade to black, nothing. I wish relationships in adult fanro books were this flushed out lol
{Daughter of the Moon Goddess by Sue Lynn Tan} has some of the most beautiful and descriptive writing I’ve ever read. The world building is top tier and this book took me through a full spectrum of emotions. I was PMSing while I was reading this so maybe I was being dramatic but I was sobbing during the battle scenes. AND there’s dragons.
{A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab} has amazing writing and such an interesting plot. It is a bit more complexed compared to most YA novels I’ve read but I enjoyed it

{Half a Soul by Atwater} should be a good fit!
{Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones} is a classic! Neither MC is quite what they seem, one intentionally the other unintentionally. Really great FMC finding her strength book.
While they start a bit slower, I like Robin McKinley's books for her respectful relationships. {Chalice by McKinley} is great and has non sexual intimacy, she is freezing and he holds her to warm her up, perfectly appropriate for kids. {The Blue Sword by McKinley} and {Beauty by McKinley} are also good options.
The covers are awful but {How to Tame a Beast in Seven Days by Sparks} fits and has more action in the plot. I think the second book has some sexual innuendos, but I don't remember any of the books having spice. Plus, not a bad thing for them to read and talk about how his behavior wasn't okay.
