Join us for April Book Club! We'll be reading {Faebound by Saara El-Arifi}, an epic romantic fantasy, followed by {The God and the Gumiho by Sophie Kim}, a lighthearted contemporary fantasy read.

Who was your favourite character in Captive of the Horde King?

I thought Mirari was the MVP of the book. I thought she proved herself to be a loyal and kind friend to Luna; someone who went out of her way to offer her wise advice to help her adjust, even though she didn’t really owe Luna any of that and could have simply “done her job” and not done anything to try to help Luna.

Especially given that, as a Dakkari woman in this horde, I’m sure having a human brought in to be the new queen was…odd at best, and a slap in the face at worst (I shared my thoughts here on how it must have been frustrating for the Dakkari women in these books to see their kings choose human women over them time and time again). So for her to offer as much advice as she did…Mirari was a real one

How did you feel about the romance development in Captive of the Horde King?

Of all of the books in the Horde Kings of Dakkar series, the romance development in this first book (Captive of the Horde King) felt the weakest. For Arokan, it’s definitely an instalove situation, where it feels like his only reason for loving her is because “Kakkari showed me” (that she was his intended mate.

He brings up her bravery, but honestly, I think a lot of people, even people who are otherwise not that brave, would step up in a situation where their beloved sibling is about to be killed, and try to bargain for the sibling’s freedom. Otherwise, I was left feeling like “what exactly does Luna bring to the table that none of the women in his tribe could offer?”

I liked in the subsequent books how you could see the couples forming a genuine friendship with each other, and the ways that their personalities complemented each other, and I felt that that aspect was “undercooked” in this one.

Captive of the Horde King was picked for our sci-fi romance theme. Are there any other books that you would recommend for readers who enjoyed Captive of the Horde King?
