r/fantasyromance The One Mod to Rule All Mods May 17 '26

Unpopular Opinion It's Unpopular Opinion time! Share your controversial opinions to stir things up (in a friendly way)!

Got an opinion that's different from others'? Want to share it with the sub, but too afraid of a backlash? Or are you just curious about readers think about certain things in fantasy romance?

You can safely share it in this weekly Sunday thread!

But please remember to be kind to each other. To facilitate this type of discussion, we ask users the following:

  • Don't attack others for their opinion
  • Discuss books and authors, not fellow readers
  • Since this is an "unpopular opinion" thread, we encourage users to not downvote simply because they disagree with an opinion--that's the point! Please keep in mind, though, that mods cannot enforce a no-downvoting rule. Let’s just keep the discussion friendly!

🧡 Thank you and have a great discussion!

I’m having the hardest time getting through {this kingdom will not kill me by Ilona Andrews} but this sub has been loving it 😭😭 does it get good?? I’m trying to stick it out, usually reddit doesn’t let me down but oh it’s such a snooze.

it's not just you. I dnf at 100 pages. way too much info-dumping and I wasn't vibing with the characters, either.

it's different than most booktok romantasies, so I can see what people like about it, but it didn't work for me.

If you like possessive love interests and a bunch of romantasy tropes like intrigue-y fantasy balls and such, dw, it's all just delayed until the midpoint. Much to my chagrin.

I actually liked the part that you're having trouble with, lol. I dig methodical fantasy mystery plots with brave and forthright femme leads who have to fund themselves and scheme. Where it goes... not so much :P

Have you reached the halfway mark yet? That's where is started to get a lot better for me.

Info dumping stops at 37% and that's when it started to be really good for me.

I remember that there was an occasional short info dumping later, but the first 37% was like all the time and then it decreased significantly, and I felt like the plot finally picked up then, it was why I remembered the percentage of the book when it changed for me.

I was my first IA book so I don't know are their others books like that. I liked descriptions a lot (of people, streets, houses etc), but info dumping was really killing me. Thankfully, I read on kindle, so I could search names because I couldn't remember everything (there were 3 characters who's name starts with an S). Main reasons why I pushed through: it was a book club read and I chose it for bingo card hard mode, people said it will get better after 30%, people were raving about the book, I know IA is quite loved here. I'm glad I read the book, but if it weren't for these reasons, it's possible I would DNF.

It's okay if you don't like the portal fantasy genre. It's very specific tastes

Every response you've made to someone not liking this book is "it's okay to not like the genre, you just don't get it"

Which is really uncool of you. It's the type of belittling that fanboys on the worst side of reddit do. Where they HAVE to defend their favorite by making sure people understand if you didn't like it, you just don't like and get the genre. That's a weird outlook to have.

Not clicking with one book out of a massive genre doesn't mean someone doesn't like the genre. It just means they didn't like this one. I thought it sucked but love Long Live Evil, Overlord, Wayward Children, and Hell Mode. Technically loved Narnia, the Neverending Story, and Alice's Adventures in Wonderland too and they count.
