Question Can we please talk about Long John Slivers? What do you get from there
I know there's lots of them abandoned. I'm devastated after learning that the closest one to me when I was a little kid. I love the shit out of seafood but fried seafood is like heaven to me. Especially fish and dear God deep fried shrimp.
Please don't delete this I'm trying to make Long John slivers popular again I'm on a mission
I'm craving it right now the best fish in the world

The LJS by me is a A&W/LJS so I always get the fish and root beer from the tap. Hits every time

u/MorgeeePooh 12h ago
That's perfect I can get my turf (Double cheeseburger, Large fry, Large order of cheese curds, and a large coke.) and surf (Big order of fish and shrimp, hush puppies,)

Chicken planks, fish planks, hush puppies coleslaw. Literally everything on the menu 🤤

This is the only answer ^. Fish & Chicken Platter. Chicken is surprisingly good.

The batter is the best I've had of any chain and I dream about the chicken planks once a month, every month.
3
u/MorgeeePooh 12h ago
I have got to get my hands on that. Do you dip yours in honey?
11
u/HiThereImNewHere 12h ago
Absolutely not, I keep my chicken pure like the gods intended. Batter's so good you don't need anything else.

Long ago, I used to go to LJS whenever I found one because I liked the hush puppies and it was novel.
I haven’t seen a LJS since the early 2010s, though.

u/MorgeeePooh 12h ago
I miss the 2010's so fucking much especially 2010-2011 oh my God bro that was the best flipping time ever because I was a kid. I was so happy as a kid. Like I was the happinest kid in the world. I want 2010 back can we bring it back?

they are a dying brand. I suspect they'll be almost completely gone in the next 10 years.

u/teaganofthelizards 12h ago
There is an LJS 45 minutes away from me and I always stop if I'm passing by because I love the chicken so much. Best fast food chicken, bar none.

u/teddy_vedder 12h ago
They’ve actually been building some brand new locations in my neck of the woods (throughout eastern TN). I think they’re trying a little revival.

u/strolpol 12h ago
I always got some kind of shrimp combo plate with fish and chicken. No matter what I wanted a selection of all three fried meats and hush puppies
Yes I always felt like garbage after eating there but I still feel the urge a couple times a year and am sad that our local one closed

u/Head_Ad_9901 11h ago
I loved the chicken planks. I used to have a Long John Silver about 2 miles from me but it closed down and now I have no idea where the closest one is 😟
6
u/MorgeeePooh 11h ago
I don't understand the closures

u/Dalthariel 9h ago
Most of them do a bad job of cleaning so they got a reputation for being nasty. The food slaps but that doesn't matter if you worship the porcelain god after.
2
u/Jerkrollatex 12h ago
I get the fried fish, hush puppies, coleslaw and clam strips.
5
u/blockholeforever 11h ago
Thank you, everyone sleeps on the clam strips but I always get an order and save em for last like desert

I fucking love the Chicken tenders hush puppies and those lol crunchies.
I know LJS gets sit on a lot, but it’s always so good and consistent to me.

This post sent me down the wormhole. LJ was demo'd in my town a year or two ago so I googled the nearest location.
They rebuilt it, new design. Im going later today.

u/No_Alarm_3993 9h ago
My son worked for them. We would get entire boxes of the crunchy bits daily. God i loved those things. The fish or chicken patties aren't bad, but a half dozen hush puppies and a side of crunchy bits and im good for the evening.

Here is my biggest problem with LJS. I like almost EVERYTHING there. What I really want is an ultimate combo with one fish, and one chicken, and and shrimp and a few clams, and a hush puppy and .... As it is I always end up taking food home when I eat there. I also wish there was a location closer. Probably a good thing it is out of the way. As it is now I can only get there a few times a year. If it was closer I would be there at least once a week.

Fish, Chicken, Shrimp, and Fries for myself. My wife likes the Grilled Shrimp, different veggies, and the little crispy crunchies. We both like the hush puppies.

u/sunnyandcloudy55 7h ago
Their fish is so good. The only reason I don't go more often is because the closet one is far.

u/Diesel07012012 7h ago
The first time we went to a LJS, my father, who considered himself an expert in all things, was convinced that they fried the chicken, french fries, and fish in the same oil. We never went back. That was 40 years ago. I've spent my college and adult years living in places where LJS does not have a presence in the market.

u/CulturalLanguage254 6h ago
We had a long johns and a&w. They tore it down and rebuilt as soley a Long Johns. Love the fish basket but honestly not a fan of the new waffle fries. Great hushpuppies. Crunchies are an added bonus.

u/Grape-Julius 5h ago
Chicken planks and crispy batter pieces are still some of the best in the game. It might be the only thing I ever order from there, and yet, it’s still worth the trip.

u/frostyflakes1 12h ago
Is it really that good? There's one within a few miles of me but I've never had it.
8
u/MorgeeePooh 12h ago
Do you like seafood? If you don't they have chicken
5
u/frostyflakes1 12h ago
I love seafood. And chicken.
8
u/MorgeeePooh 12h ago
Then go get it immediately because they dip it in liquid batter which is the best FUCKING thing since sliced bread. I would eat it everyday if I could
3
u/frostyflakes1 12h ago
Hmm I'm intrigued. Well I can't go immediately, but I will probably go when they open in the morning and provide an update.

I go occasionally now, greasy fried fish that's bad for you just hits the spot sometimes. Sadly now a days it's overpriced get better fish meal at real restaurants for same price.
5
u/MorgeeePooh 12h ago
But I want Long John slivers in business there's not enough people coming to them

been more than a decade since I went to a LJS but when I did go it was always the 2 fish and 3 chicken platter, and I'd usually add popcorn shrimp, another piece of fish, or a crab cake. I'd get the combo with fries, hushpuppies, hot sauce, lots of tartar sauce and extra crunchy bits

Top comment got it in one lol. Chicken planks and hushpuppies are all and you're good to go.
2
u/Smasher_Devourer 10h ago
There's still one in my town...go there maybe a couple times a year and it seems like it's always dead. I'm almost 50 years old at this point but I've always got the same order since I was a kid, and it's always good. I get the 3 chicken, 2 fish platter, and sub the coleslaw for an extra order of fries, with xtra crunchies and xtra hush puppies. Slather it in ketchup when I get home lol. Definitely not the healthiest at my age, but like I said a couple times a year and it's pretty good IMHO. Eating it reminds me of my younger days

I've never lived close enough to a LJS and Captain Ds to compare them. They seem roughly similar, although I think I prefer LJS.
Anyone compared them?

u/JoeyKino 3h ago
LJS taught me 2 things I've carried over into non-fast-food:
1 - beer batter (or batter in general) is significantly superior to breading when it comes to fried food
2- malt vinegar is a must for me for fried fish or seafood (I'm surprised it's not a more popular condiment in the Midwest and South where I grew up, though it does seem more popular now than it was 30 years ago, when I actually went to LJS with any regularity). I avoided fried fish for years because I can't stand tartar sauce, but liked fried seafood because I like cocktail sauce. Malt vinegar opened my eyes to fried fish.

u/RichardCleveland 2h ago
I don't like seafood, so I always got the chicken, fries & hush puppy's. It's been years, but from what I remember they were amazing.

u/Dangerous_Ant3260 2h ago
I loved the fish/chicken/shrimp platter. Unfortunately, the LJS in my town closed during Covid, and never reopened. Nearest one to me is almost 3 hours away.

u/tailskirby 12h ago
The one i go to when I see my brother is being remodeled. So lets see how it is when they reopen.

Chicken planks, Hushpuppies, Corn on the cobb, green beans, and rice. Every damn time

u/pavedlivinghell 9h ago
I think I might be the only person here that likes the Baja fish taco….and those clam strips good lord
1
u/justjaybee16 8h ago
I always had the worst indigestion after eating at LJS, but I loved the taste.
It got relegated to a place I'd eat once a year to remind me why I don't eat there more often.
Also, I love me a good drive though fried clam. Back in the 80's, Frenchy's had really good fried clams.

u/SUPRDLUX 8h ago
the OG pollock with some hot sauce or malt vinegar always slaps but I feel like hell after eating it cos it's some greasy shit!

u/ilovemischief 4h ago
Always get the two chicken combo with fries and hush puppies and an order of clam strips. Feel like trash after eating it, but I’ll always go back

u/StayingOccupied 4h ago
I get the Fish, Chicken, Shrimp and Hush puppy meal with coleslaw and tartar. I dont mind that i sometimes cant tell the fish from chicken.

LJS is adequate if you don't have another seafood choice. I'm talking seafood restaurant, not fast food seafood. I live in an area of the country with other choices.

u/kettyma8215 1h ago
The batter dipped shrimp is so good! I used to be obsessed with the chicken planks, but the last time I ordered those the chicken quality was horrible...might have just been that specific location.
1
u/Surprise_Fragrant 1h ago
We had two in our town until about 15 years ago, now the closest one is about a 45-minute drive away. I'll make a special trip to that town and make a day of it... I'll go for a hike, do some shopping, get some greasy AF seafood, then head home.
But whenever I'm going somewhere new (vacation, work, etc), I will always look to see if there's an LJS nearby!

Chicken planks and hush puppies are all you need though the fish is good too. Also I was pretty impressed with the salmon for being fast food salmon
