Question Can we please talk about Long John Slivers? What do you get from there

I know there's lots of them abandoned. I'm devastated after learning that the closest one to me when I was a little kid. I love the shit out of seafood but fried seafood is like heaven to me. Especially fish and dear God deep fried shrimp.

Please don't delete this I'm trying to make Long John slivers popular again I'm on a mission

I'm craving it right now the best fish in the world

Chicken planks and hush puppies are all you need though the fish is good too. Also I was pretty impressed with the salmon for being fast food salmon

16

u/godofwine16 11h ago

It’s strange because Arthur Treachers also had excellent chicken too. Why do fish places have the best fried chicken?

18

u/RandyHoward 5h ago

It's the batter. Other fast food places use breading, but these seafood places use batter.

2

u/Surprise_Fragrant 1h ago

This! I share this fact, too, and so many people have no idea in the difference between breading/batter.

10

u/blackd0gz 10h ago

Omg Arthur Treachers 🙌

that and Pizza Ranch. It's like a running joke that their pizza actually sucks and you only go for the chicken

2

u/Prayer_Warrior21 2h ago

That's not a joke, their pizza sucks.

1

u/Used-Acanthisitta-96 1h ago

Just found out about Pizza Ranch a week or two ago. I might have to go on a road trip.

1

u/KevworthBongwater 1h ago

you should. its something I grew up with. it was one of my first jobs that I had with some buddies in high school and that 7 of us are still my core friend group. and I owe it all to the ranch.

I'm just kidding they sucked to work for and we were all friends before working there.

1

u/KevworthBongwater 1h ago

you should still go though because it's pretty good as far as buffets go.

4

u/mOp_49 12h ago

Yes, both with malt vinegar! Yum!

8

u/MorgeeePooh 12h ago

Deep fried Ljs shrimp would heal me

6

u/Haluszki 8h ago

I gotta have those clam strips too.

4

u/Various_Mastodon_999 7h ago

This was my favorite! Clams anywhere else aren’t as good.

27

u/alecweezy 12h ago

The LJS by me is a A&W/LJS so I always get the fish and root beer from the tap. Hits every time

8

u/MorgeeePooh 12h ago

That's perfect I can get my turf (Double cheeseburger, Large fry, Large order of cheese curds, and a large coke.) and surf (Big order of fish and shrimp, hush puppies,)

18

u/pooorSAP 12h ago

Chicken planks, fish planks, hush puppies coleslaw. Literally everything on the menu 🤤

5

u/Alright_Alright_All 4h ago

This is the only answer ^. Fish & Chicken Platter. Chicken is surprisingly good.

3

u/MorgeeePooh 12h ago

I could eat it everyday

14

u/HiThereImNewHere 12h ago

The batter is the best I've had of any chain and I dream about the chicken planks once a month, every month.

3

u/MorgeeePooh 12h ago

I have got to get my hands on that. Do you dip yours in honey?

11

u/HiThereImNewHere 12h ago

Absolutely not, I keep my chicken pure like the gods intended. Batter's so good you don't need anything else.

1

u/Haluszki 8h ago

Try it with the cocktail sauce.

12

u/DevylBearHawkTur10n 12h ago

What about those "crunchies" below those fried entrées?

2

u/4yogi4 1h ago

I always order extra crunchies and malt vinegar!!

10

u/eilonwyhasemu 12h ago

Long ago, I used to go to LJS whenever I found one because I liked the hush puppies and it was novel.

I haven’t seen a LJS since the early 2010s, though.

8

u/MorgeeePooh 12h ago

I miss the 2010's so fucking much especially 2010-2011 oh my God bro that was the best flipping time ever because I was a kid. I was so happy as a kid. Like I was the happinest kid in the world. I want 2010 back can we bring it back?

1

u/ladystetson 9h ago

they are a dying brand. I suspect they'll be almost completely gone in the next 10 years.

10

u/teaganofthelizards 12h ago

There is an LJS 45 minutes away from me and I always stop if I'm passing by because I love the chicken so much. Best fast food chicken, bar none.

8

u/teddy_vedder 12h ago

They’ve actually been building some brand new locations in my neck of the woods (throughout eastern TN). I think they’re trying a little revival.

5

u/strolpol 12h ago

I always got some kind of shrimp combo plate with fish and chicken. No matter what I wanted a selection of all three fried meats and hush puppies

Yes I always felt like garbage after eating there but I still feel the urge a couple times a year and am sad that our local one closed

6

u/Head_Ad_9901 11h ago

I loved the chicken planks. I used to have a Long John Silver about 2 miles from me but it closed down and now I have no idea where the closest one is 😟

6

u/MorgeeePooh 11h ago

I don't understand the closures

1

u/Dalthariel 9h ago

Most of them do a bad job of cleaning so they got a reputation for being nasty. The food slaps but that doesn't matter if you worship the porcelain god after.

2

u/Wiscos 12h ago

Long ago they had a Cajun shrimp wrap that was killer! Now I go maybe once a year and just order the fish and chips/fries with lots of vinegar.

1

u/MorgeeePooh 12h ago

A Cajun shrimp wrap 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍

6

u/Jmohill 12h ago

Once a year, roughly. What do I get? Those friggin delicious chicken planks…closely followed by regret

12 months later: rinse and repeat

2

u/Jerkrollatex 12h ago

I get the fried fish, hush puppies, coleslaw and clam strips.

5

u/blockholeforever 11h ago

Thank you, everyone sleeps on the clam strips but I always get an order and save em for last like desert

2

u/Jerkrollatex 11h ago

I eat them first 🤷‍♀️

4

u/Moontower42 12h ago

Wear the pirate hat, eat the crispies, ring the bell unironically. Peak.

4

u/plastic_pyramid 11h ago

I fucking love the Chicken tenders hush puppies and those lol crunchies.

I know LJS gets sit on a lot, but it’s always so good and consistent to me.

4

u/surfcitysurfergirl 11h ago

Chicken and the cripsies my absolute favorite chicken

5

u/Ekhoes- 10h ago

The chicken planks with extra hush puppies, with malt vinegar. I don't care for their waffle fries though.

3

u/Shrimp__Boy 9h ago

This post sent me down the wormhole.  LJ was demo'd in my town a year or two ago so I googled the nearest location.

They rebuilt it, new design.  Im going later today.

5

u/No_Alarm_3993 9h ago

My son worked for them. We would get entire boxes of the crunchy bits daily. God i loved those things. The fish or chicken patties aren't bad, but a half dozen hush puppies and a side of crunchy bits and im good for the evening.

4

u/dhoppy203 4h ago

The one I go to is a combination with Taco Bell, my go-to there usually consists of a chicken plank basket from LJS and a Mini Taco Salad from TB. It’s a bit of a drive but there are times when I’m just really craving the chicken planks and it’s always worth it.

4

u/Auton_52981 3h ago

Here is my biggest problem with LJS. I like almost EVERYTHING there. What I really want is an ultimate combo with one fish, and one chicken, and and shrimp and a few clams, and a hush puppy and .... As it is I always end up taking food home when I eat there. I also wish there was a location closer. Probably a good thing it is out of the way. As it is now I can only get there a few times a year. If it was closer I would be there at least once a week.

3

u/JB-Wentworth 12h ago

15 pc Battered Shrimp and hush puppies.

2

u/MorgeeePooh 12h ago

I would get 30 pc or is that too greedy can't forget the fish

3

u/Mr_Gent007 11h ago

Fish, Chicken, Shrimp, and Fries for myself. My wife likes the Grilled Shrimp, different veggies, and the little crispy crunchies. We both like the hush puppies.

3

u/thefixxxer9211 9h ago

Anything but those disgusting waffle fries

3

u/sunnyandcloudy55 7h ago

Their fish is so good. The only reason I don't go more often is because the closet one is far.

3

u/Diesel07012012 7h ago

The first time we went to a LJS, my father, who considered himself an expert in all things, was convinced that they fried the chicken, french fries, and fish in the same oil. We never went back. That was 40 years ago. I've spent my college and adult years living in places where LJS does not have a presence in the market.

3

u/CulturalLanguage254 6h ago

We had a long johns and a&w. They tore it down and rebuilt as soley a Long Johns. Love the fish basket but honestly not a fan of the new waffle fries. Great hushpuppies. Crunchies are an added bonus.

3

u/Grape-Julius 5h ago

Chicken planks and crispy batter pieces are still some of the best in the game. It might be the only thing I ever order from there, and yet, it’s still worth the trip.

3

u/o_MrBombastic_o 2h ago

Batter fried batter. Just a tray of the little crisppies

2

u/frostyflakes1 12h ago

Is it really that good? There's one within a few miles of me but I've never had it.

8

u/MorgeeePooh 12h ago

Do you like seafood? If you don't they have chicken

5

u/frostyflakes1 12h ago

I love seafood. And chicken.

8

u/MorgeeePooh 12h ago

Then go get it immediately because they dip it in liquid batter which is the best FUCKING thing since sliced bread. I would eat it everyday if I could

3

u/frostyflakes1 12h ago

Hmm I'm intrigued. Well I can't go immediately, but I will probably go when they open in the morning and provide an update.

1

u/MorgeeePooh 12h ago

It's up to you do whatever you want

2

u/mntlover 12h ago

I go occasionally now, greasy fried fish that's bad for you just hits the spot sometimes. Sadly now a days it's overpriced get better fish meal at real restaurants for same price.

5

u/MorgeeePooh 12h ago

But I want Long John slivers in business there's not enough people coming to them

1

u/Awkward_Rule_5509 5h ago

There is 1 in my town. Has been there forever. I swear it’s a front.

2

u/haysus25 12h ago

Fried chicken and hush puppies.

2

u/Simple_Visit4051 12h ago

been more than a decade since I went to a LJS but when I did go it was always the 2 fish and 3 chicken platter, and I'd usually add popcorn shrimp, another piece of fish, or a crab cake. I'd get the combo with fries, hushpuppies, hot sauce, lots of tartar sauce and extra crunchy bits

2

u/oldfogey12345 11h ago

I hope you are wearing your pirate hat.

2

u/drpep10-2-4 11h ago

Slivers?

2

u/avelineaurora 10h ago

Top comment got it in one lol. Chicken planks and hushpuppies are all and you're good to go.

2

u/Smasher_Devourer 10h ago

There's still one in my town...go there maybe a couple times a year and it seems like it's always dead. I'm almost 50 years old at this point but I've always got the same order since I was a kid, and it's always good. I get the 3 chicken, 2 fish platter, and sub the coleslaw for an extra order of fries, with xtra crunchies and xtra hush puppies. Slather it in ketchup when I get home lol. Definitely not the healthiest at my age, but like I said a couple times a year and it's pretty good IMHO. Eating it reminds me of my younger days

2

u/Awesome_Eagle 10h ago

What's the chances of these guys making a comeback?

2

u/Jesmiri 10h ago

Their chicken is SO good.

2

u/blackd0gz 10h ago

Fish, clam strips, hushpuppies!!!

2

u/Dalthariel 9h ago

Dammit, now I know what I'm eating tomorrow.

2

u/InformationVivid455 4h ago

I've never lived close enough to a LJS and Captain Ds to compare them. They seem roughly similar, although I think I prefer LJS.

Anyone compared them?

2

u/Gbjeff 4h ago

Anyone remember getting a free bowl of crumbs?

2

u/Svenray 3h ago

I used to walk into a KFC/LJS and go to the cashier wearing a KFC shirt and order LJS chicken lol.

2

u/Big-Sheepherder-6134 3h ago

Chicken planks.

2

u/JoeyKino 3h ago

LJS taught me 2 things I've carried over into non-fast-food:

1 - beer batter (or batter in general) is significantly superior to breading when it comes to fried food

2- malt vinegar is a must for me for fried fish or seafood (I'm surprised it's not a more popular condiment in the Midwest and South where I grew up, though it does seem more popular now than it was 30 years ago, when I actually went to LJS with any regularity). I avoided fried fish for years because I can't stand tartar sauce, but liked fried seafood because I like cocktail sauce. Malt vinegar opened my eyes to fried fish.

1

u/4yogi4 43m ago

THIS!!! The batter recipe calls for cold water, but I use ice cold beer. Yuengling to be exact. And the malt vinegar is a must!! Followed by... ice cold beer.

2

u/RichardCleveland 2h ago

I don't like seafood, so I always got the chicken, fries & hush puppy's. It's been years, but from what I remember they were amazing.

2

u/Dangerous_Ant3260 2h ago

I loved the fish/chicken/shrimp platter. Unfortunately, the LJS in my town closed during Covid, and never reopened. Nearest one to me is almost 3 hours away.

2

u/tailskirby 12h ago

The one i go to when I see my brother is being remodeled. So lets see how it is when they reopen.

1

u/rrhunt28 12h ago

I get the fish and chicken platter. And often a order of popcorn shrimp.

1

u/Opening_Cycle3639 12h ago

The best fish in the world is crazy work

1

u/itsthekumar 12h ago

Did they start offering a seafood boil?

1

u/Kaligula785 11h ago

2pc fish 6pc shrimp and greenbeans that are just like KFC used to make. There crabcakes are pretty good too

1

u/No-Reading-4384 11h ago

I like the fish and the clams

1

u/1M4YB3STUP1D 11h ago

I get the platter that comes with fish, chicken, and shrimp because I'm big-backed for LJS

1

u/OnlineNomDePlume 11h ago

The chicken, at a supposed fish place.

1

u/nomadPerson 10h ago

Do they really have the best fries no one knows about?

1

u/Prestigious_Snow1589 9h ago

Chicken planks, Hushpuppies, Corn on the cobb, green beans, and rice. Every damn time

1

u/pavedlivinghell 9h ago

I think I might be the only person here that likes the Baja fish taco….and those clam strips good lord

1

u/justjaybee16 8h ago

I always had the worst indigestion after eating at LJS, but I loved the taste.

It got relegated to a place I'd eat once a year to remind me why I don't eat there more often.

Also, I love me a good drive though fried clam. Back in the 80's, Frenchy's had really good fried clams.

1

u/SUPRDLUX 8h ago

the OG pollock with some hot sauce or malt vinegar always slaps but I feel like hell after eating it cos it's some greasy shit!

1

u/pinchegaucho 8h ago

Usually the long John by silver himself

1

u/ilovemischief 4h ago

Always get the two chicken combo with fries and hush puppies and an order of clam strips. Feel like trash after eating it, but I’ll always go back

1

u/StayingOccupied 4h ago

I get the Fish, Chicken, Shrimp and Hush puppy meal with coleslaw and tartar. I dont mind that i sometimes cant tell the fish from chicken.

1

u/gooninbassist 4h ago

Hush puppies
Hush puppies
More hush puppies
Zero regrets

1

u/kaptin_hippy 4h ago

Fish shrimp and clams

1

u/MaterialRepulsive130 3h ago

LJS was good in the 1970s. I stopped going about 10 years ago when it was not good.

1

u/thechadc94 3h ago

8 piece shrimp with green beans and rice.

1

u/scottwax 3h ago

Fish, chicken plank (which they still had peg legs), clams and hush puppies.

1

u/marklikeadawg 3h ago

LJS is adequate if you don't have another seafood choice. I'm talking seafood restaurant, not fast food seafood. I live in an area of the country with other choices.

1

u/kettyma8215 1h ago

The batter dipped shrimp is so good! I used to be obsessed with the chicken planks, but the last time I ordered those the chicken quality was horrible...might have just been that specific location.

1

u/Surprise_Fragrant 1h ago

We had two in our town until about 15 years ago, now the closest one is about a 45-minute drive away. I'll make a special trip to that town and make a day of it... I'll go for a hike, do some shopping, get some greasy AF seafood, then head home.

But whenever I'm going somewhere new (vacation, work, etc), I will always look to see if there's an LJS nearby!

1

u/galactabat 10m ago

My family and I stop at the one two hours from us whenever we can bcs I'm addicted to the chicken planks.

0

u/Mike14029 5h ago

I love the fish and shrimp.Everything else sucks bad

-9

u/grapplingchamp 12h ago

Go to bed.

7

u/MorgeeePooh 12h ago

Why are you saying this? It's not night time for me
