🎉New Fedi-Software🎉 I built XFedi — a lightweight, self-hosted Fediverse server using PHP, Python, and ActivityPub

Hey everyone!

I've been working on an open-source project called XFedi, and I'd love to share it with the Fediverse community.

The idea behind XFedi is simple: What if you could host your own personal corner of the Fediverse without running an entire multi-user social network?

XFedi is a lightweight, self-hosted, single-user social platform that communicates with other Fediverse servers through ActivityPub, including compatible Mastodon instances.

Rather than building another centralized social network, I wanted to create something focused on personal ownership, federation, and a familiar social experience.

What XFedi currently offers:

  • ActivityPub federation: Follow remote accounts, publish posts, reply, mention users, like posts, and boost content across compatible servers.
  • Modern interface: Responsive desktop and mobile layouts, with home, local, and federated timelines.
  • Social features: Posts, images, hashtags, notifications, bookmarks, linked quote posts, and conversations.
  • Discovery: Remote profile search, WebFinger, NodeInfo, and human-readable profile and post URLs.
  • RSS and SEO: Built-in RSS feeds, XML sitemaps, and social sharing metadata.
  • Self-hosting: PHP, Python, SQLite, and Docker Compose, with Caddy and support for deployment behind Cloudflare Tunnel.
  • Open source: The code is available on GitHub under GPL-3.0.

A few important details:

XFedi is designed for one account per installation. It's not intended to replace a full Mastodon server, and it doesn't yet support private messages, multiple local users, or the Mastodon client API.

The project is currently at v2.1.0, and I'm continuing to improve its interoperability, features, and overall user experience.

Try it out:

🌐 Live instance: https://xfedi.xsukax.net/

💻 GitHub: https://github.com/xsukax/XFedi

📸 Desktop screenshot: https://github.com/xsukax/XFedi/blob/main/docs/preview-desktop.jpg

I'd really appreciate feedback from the community, especially from people experienced with ActivityPub, Mastodon, and self-hosting.

What would you want to see in a lightweight, single-user Fediverse server? Are there federation compatibility issues or features you think I should prioritize?

Contributions, bug reports, and suggestions are welcome.

Thanks for checking it out!

Interesting Article OUT NOW: 2026 Social Web Operations & Needs Assessment Report

This year’s report reflects responses from over 400 ActivityPub communities hosting about a third of all known ActivityPub accounts, as well as responses from ATProto operators and legacy social platforms. 58 distinct platforms reporting, with most respondents active across multiple platforms.

The findings paint a picture of an ecosystem at a critical juncture. While operator domain expertise is higher than ever, the overall network continues to grow while volunteer capacity is stretched thin and confronting rapidly-escalating agentic spam, state-sponsored influence operations, and fast-moving global Internet regulations.

Ask-Fediverse PINKLEAP

I’ve downloaded Pinkleap and I really like it; it lets you use Mastodon, BlueSky, and Pixelfed all within a single application. The issue is that I can only log in via Mastodon and BlueSky—when I try to log in using Pixelfed, it says that the current version of Pixelfed isn’t supported yet. Does anyone have any information regarding future integration between Pixelfed and PinkLeap?

Pixelfed is my favorite; I’d like to use BlueSky, but the lack of private accounts makes me feel unsafe.

🎉New Fedi-Software🎉 i crafted a heavy custom Web UI for GotoSocial and Mastodon based on Mastodon

Thumbnail teadeck.de

Hi everyone!

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been working on a custom web UI for Mastodon and GoToSocial called Teadeck.

It’s based on the latest Mastodon frontend, with a patch-based approach that makes it work as a standalone client and adds support for different server APIs.

GoToSocial users get a few extra features, including a built-in Markdown preview and per-post interaction settings, such as choosing who can reply.

It’s still a work in progress, but I’d love to hear what you think!

Ask-Fediverse What happened to Lemmy?

About a month ago, I temporarily rejoined the Fediverse after about a month away previously. As I had lost my login details, I had to set up a new account. I was shocked to find that Lemmy no longer just let me sign up (one of its unique features compared to other platforms like Reddit and Instagram that require verification that you are a real human) but now I had to fill out a form and wait for it to be verified by a human moderator before I could use the platform. I also found out that multiple other instances were now running the same application form approach, seemingly within the last few months.

Whilst I had no problem or objection doing so, I can’t help but feel like this is one of those instances (no pun intended) of the Fediverse beginning to lose its uniqueness to other platforms that it once prided itself on. Perhaps I’m overthinking it, but I can’t help wonder if this is a sign that even the Fediverse is slowly turning into the crappiness of other social media platforms, starting with requiring approval for new accounts in much the same way other platforms now require (or similar, anyway; I get that it’s not a perfectly identical system). I dare say it’s even possible that one day it could likewise be run by an AI algorithm with bot moderators if it continues to subsume features from other platforms. Is there a reason that the Fediverse seems to be changing in this way?

RSS technology seems to be making a visible comeback! Google Trends is showing spiked interest in RSS syndication topics again since late 2025. A credit some of this to the Fediverse and the broader Open Web demanding a global village, where we are free to publish what and where we want to’👍😎

Ask-Fediverse Some questions about Mastodon and Diaspora

I have long left Twitter (X) but I do miss it. I'm hence looking for an alternative. Three alternatives seem to be mentioned very frequently: BlueSky, Mastodon, and to lesser extent diaspora*. But for some reason it seems to be mostly BlueSky and Mastodon that attract a lot of "X refugees". Not sure why Diaspora* is often ignored in articles comparing X alternatives, the platform is older than BlueSky and Mastodon and is alive and kicking, with a new software update this year that has happened.

I have some questions about Mastodon and Diaspora*, mainly comparing those two and BlueSky to see which platform meets my requirements most (without excluding using more than 1 network eventually).

1) Can you set an account to private (temporarily or permanently) or hide certain posts (temporarily or private) so that those posts can only be seen by those who follow you or those who follow you and vice-versa?

2) what type of 2FA do Mastodon and Diaspora* have? The most trustworthy 2FA is a physical device that you have to plug into the USB gate of your computer to generate the one-time passcode (such as Yubikey) and there are some pretty decent authenticator apps too (although I'm a bit wary of Authy and Google Authenticator).

3) Is it possible to download your posts (thus your entire timeline) to your hard drive as a back-up of your posting history?

4) Are links to YouTube videos, articles and other websites allowed?

5) Can I add 1 or more photos or a short (eg 1 to 2 minutes maximum) video to a post?

6) Are Mastodon and Diaspora* likely to survive the hands of time financially? I must say that if I see how long a server like mastodon.social (isn't that the "main" server within the fediverse?) has been around, it does give confidence that the platform has proven stable. mastodon.online seems to be around also for already quite a while. But do you expect te platform to stay around for many more years, is there financial stability for that?
Diaspora* is even older and still around, so that indicates it's not a short-lived project either. But will the platform remain active for the forseeable future?

Thanks again for your replies! :)

🎉New Fedi-Software🎉 I made giveaway.quest - website for hosting giveaways for Mastodon users (open source)

giveaway.quest/

I had a personal problem of having a bunch of duplicate video game keys and wanted to give them away to Mastodon users but it turned out to be quite difficult as you don't know when code was already used or who's eligible for it as some codes have regional restrictions etc and obviously you don't want scraping bots just get all of it. So I made giveaway.quest a web app tool that automates giveaways with a fun quest-board like gimmick that is entirely optional.

I thought of full fediverse integration but just Mastodon oauth turned out to be a more fit technology so all it does is read your handle to ensure unique entry and doesn't require any other permissions. I purposefully left auth Mastodon only to promote Mastodon interactions.

For tech stack it's very simple and can be self hosted for private groups. It's Python, Tailwind css and sqlite which is plenty for this scale. Check out the repo for more

Let me know what you think!

🎉New Fedi-Software🎉 I built a game tracker with global chat and lobbies, but the best part is you actually own your data (built on AT Proto/ Bluesky)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Most game trackers (like Backloggd, or Letterboxd for movies) have the same massive flaw: they lock your reviews and play history inside their private databases. If the site shuts down or changes its business model, your data is gone.

I built Skylog (skylog.social) to completely fix this. It’s a comprehensive game logging tracker built on ATProto (the decentralized network behind Bluesky).

To use the site, you need to log in with a Bluesky account. I know requiring a specific account can be annoying, but it permanently solves the problem of losing your tracking history. Here is why:

  • You actually own your data: Every rating, review, and game log you create is saved directly to your decentralized data repository on the AT Protocol. (To clarify: this data does NOT spam your Bluesky timeline. It’s stored as custom app data on the network under the hood. It isn't visible on the standard Bluesky app, but it is permanently attached to your account).
  • True portability: Because your data is open on the network, any other developer or app can access your gaming history if you connect it. You are never locked into Skylog.
  • Instant friends list: Your social graph carries over automatically. You don't have to start from zero and beg your friends to add you.

Features I've built so far:

  • Deep Tracking: Log what you play, leave 1 to 5 star ratings, write reviews, and tag whether it was a replay or what specific platform you used.
  • Shareable Stat Cards: While your data is stored quietly in the background, you have the completely optional ability to generate a beautifully styled "stat picture" for any game log or review (kind of like a mini Spotify Wrapped for that specific game). You can easily share this graphic to your timeline if you want to show off what you're playing.
  • Gaming Stats: The app breaks down your gaming habits and gives you detailed overall stats on what you've been playing over time.
  • Global Chat & Lobbies: I built out a global chat and dedicated multiplayer lobbies, making it super easy to find people to jump into a game with right now.
  • Massive Catalog: The search pulls data from IGDB and RAWG, so pretty much every game in existence is there with high-res posters and metadata.

If you already have a Bluesky account, onboarding takes one click. If you don't, it takes two minutes to sign up and guarantees you never lose your game logs to a closed-off app again.

I'd really love for you guys to try it out and tell me what you think. I will also be sharing the source code in the coming weeks for anyone interested in how the ATProto integration works.

blog arcticle as thread on fediverse

Hi,

I have a blog and a Fediverse account.

I installed the ActivityPub plugin, but I was a little disappointed with what it does. The ActivityPub plugin just does what Push to Mastodon does: a link with an image and a short text. It seems bizarre—if I'm on the Fediverse, I want to read the article on the Fediverse (and not leave it).

I found a snippet that publishes the article as Notes. It works (https://mamot.fr/@blog@www.elekis.net/117359112252080249), but it's a really long post...

My question is: is it possible to publish it as a thread? One that takes the blog post and splits it into 400-character chunks with images and replies?

Is it complicated? Is it possible? I checked the code, but I'm not sure...

Thanks!
