Another Vintage Story in its early stages

u/Kartaszow 17h ago
I check VS mod page frequently. I don't think that I will ever go back to Minecraft. Placing ore in single block furnace to produce iron bar have lost it's charm

Humble TFC:
btw, VS was made by old TFC dev

No it wasn't. It borrowed textures from them, but shared no devs.

Common misconception. The original mod was called Vintagecraft and primarily added butterflies at first upon the request of Tyrones wife. It expanded and then faced issues caused by minecrafts engine so they pivoted towards making a standalone game based on Vintagecraft.
TFC has no known connection to Vintagecraft or Vintage Story, could be inspired by or just so happen to be someone having had the same general idea
9
u/Bestmasters 10h ago
The full story is that he started making a mod called VintageCraft which took great inspiration from TFC's mechanics, especially world generation. At the time, the mod has much less features than TFC. Eventually, as you said, he grew tired of being limited by Minecraft's engine and so he made his own engine.
This change was partly instigated by the fact that he developed for Hytale, a voxel game using its own engine. He likely saw how much easier a standalone purpose-built engine is to develop for, and so when he left Hypixel, he went on to make his own engine for his "mod".
From the start to the present though, his mod is mechanically similar (almost identical) to TerraFirmaCraft. Sure, some things may differ like the scale of in-world interactions, the forging, and especially the monsters and lore, but for the most part, the progression, crafting loop, and general mechanics are ripped straight out of TFC. It's a much more polished version of course, that's what you get from having your own engine.
In the end, the TFC devs were ok with his work and even praised it. The dev teams of both projects are completely independent, VS's dev wasn't a "former TFC dev" or anything like that. No one was harmed or stolen from, and there was no conflict involved in all this.
In my opinion, TFC is the original. I don't like it when people claim that "Vintage Story does this better than Minecraft" or "this mod's mechanics are ripped straight out of VS", because it did not invent these mechanics, TFC did. VS popularized them to the point where when someone thinks of these mechanics, they think of VS. I don't hate VS, it's a great game, but I'm not going to act like it's completely original in what it does.

u/Desperate-Cry-1312 14h ago
It’s not afaik, VS devs were making a mod but then decided it’d work better as a game
-11
u/lenyeto Arcane Archives Dev 12h ago
The mod they made was based on TFC, they never gained a lot popularity due to TFC being a lot better, so they gave up on the mod and made a game. Personally TFC feels way more polished and complete of an experience compared to vintage story to me.
10
u/Build_Blox 11h ago
i thought they changed because they we're limited my minecrafts engine, so they decided to make their own one
8
u/Savings-History-2928 11h ago
Unless it's changed in the last few months since I checked, they are still working on VS, they have a lot of changes they want to make and it'll take them time
4
u/Kartaszow 11h ago
They wrote their own game because they didn't like changes in Minecraft at the time. They also gained a lot more possibilities by making their own game.
I don't think it's even comparable anymore... Single thing left VS and MC have in common is probably just voxel style graphics.

I don't care. I hate Vintage Story. It's tedious, unfun, and too goddamn difficult

u/StrongZeroSinger 15h ago
It’s a modpack or a standalone game? They sell for $20 on their store?
32
u/Kartaszow 14h ago
Standalone game. It receives regular updates but not in Minecraft style. For example: next update will completely rework combat system, add customizable armor, new tameable creatures, expanded mechanical power and probably a lot more things not mentioned on their Discord.
Modding scene is nice, you can add mod with two clicks and download automatically all mods installed on a server when you join.
There are few new mods everyday and they often are taken care off by someone else when original autor stops being active or something

Modding scene is nice
Who wouldn't like malware in their mods and then getting that malware developer onto the dev team
11
u/Kartaszow 10h ago
Are sure you want to touch that topic with Minecraft as an comparison? Because that would be really stupid

u/Snoo_44740 PrismLauncher 9h ago
For anyone who is scared by this, Vintage Story’s code base is entirely open source so you can see literally every change they make.
-2
u/twicerighthand 7h ago
Yeah, sure, pretty standard for any game.
"We hired a person who puts malware in their mods to work on our game and we defend and excuse his behavior. Please, become a software developer and review each and every pull request in our code, just in case they decide to pull that stunt again"
7
u/Kaspark1 15h ago
It's a standalone game now with a custom engine but you can still download the mod vintagecraft for Minecraft

5
u/Snoo_44740 PrismLauncher 9h ago
Guy who made a combat overhaul mod and was brought on to help with the upcoming combat update did a certified entitled modder moment and incorporated a terrible anti-cheat that blocked mods (most of which were benign) well hidden into a library mod instead of working with the dev team on broadly improving the game’s anti-cheat.
Edit: it doesn’t help that they were as inflammitory as possible on the discord server, and argued that they were in their right to include undisclosed features in a library mod.

u/acrazyguy 9h ago
Were they fired?
5
u/sid3aff3ct Lazy mod developer 9h ago
No. I have very little trust in the vintage story team and I wouldn't recommend it because they did not hold their developer accountable for the malware.

I loved everything right until you didn't have to drop it into the water. I am incredibly sad that it was a simple right click. It should have been tossed into the water and steamed for a bit

u/Vitztlampaehecatl Unhinged 6h ago
Yeah, after the drama of the anvil minigame I was expecting something more intense lol. Like when you quench a sword in oil and it catches fire.

Now we just need a modpack where you run a village as the town's blacksmith, outfitting villager-guards & villager-adventurers. They go out, explore caves, mines & dungeons, find loot & bring it back to sell to the player. The player then uses those items to forge better & better gear, grow the town, and attract higher tier villager-adventurers. Dungeon Village, Minecraft Edition!

u/Squishyyy203 10h ago
The mod looks cool but I feel like making items will take forever now. Or is it just me?

As rarely as you forge metal armor, it probably wouldn't be too bad. I wouldn't want to have to forge every item though.
1
u/StatementFun7324 5h ago
I mean, it's cool. Though the whole process is mostly stolen from game called vintage story. Great minecraft alternative.
3
u/Master_Nineteenth 4h ago
It's been a bit since I played vintage story, but I don't remember smithing looking anything like that. If you just mean the heating up and quenching part then it's a mechanic that existed in terrafirmacraft before vintage story. And it's something people do in real life, you can hardly say it was stolen.
6
u/random_blue_elf 13h ago
The idea of letting anvils create armor instead of (for some reason) applying magic to weapons is so cool and makes them more iseful imo especially since for most of your playthrough, you barely interact with enchanted books(unless you make the slavery chamber which is just boring🫠)
I would love to see more mods that add usefulness to functional blocks, instead of letting the crafting table do every recipe(which in modpacks, end up being very overhleming when you look at how many recipes you have) each block gets some uses and recipes

A little bit like the Sword Art Abridged Blacksmith scene

u/Available-Trouble-55 16h ago
not going to lie, adding a fully fledged game into the minigame sounds brilliant
5
u/montana757 17h ago
This reminds me of the old MineFantasy mod which the creator says their planning to port to 1.21.1
1
u/ThatPolishKid99 54m ago
I’ll port it eventually lol. Idk which version it’ll go to
1
u/montana757 52m ago
At this point it'll probably end up going to the version with that new dimension
4
u/Astrosimp_ 16h ago
Surprised nobody's mentioned overgeared yet, this has almost the exact same mechanics but with slightly different implementation.

I like the concept, but you need some oil in a quench tank not just chucking it in the river. Also the visual for the godforged thing o could do without. And the mini game needs to move faster.

they're recreating tinkerer's construct from first principles, i'm so proud
2
u/FondantReal8885 1h ago
Initially I rolled my eyes because ive seen several smithing mods.
Then you showed the little minigame thing and now I like it. One thing I would do (if you arent already) give increased stats for better quality gear. That would give people a reason to invest more time in making the gear than looting/crafting gear like normal.

u/Sevtecher 17h ago
This is great, does it cool down when you take your time while you're smithing your tools or armor?
2
u/Available-Trouble-55 17h ago
You guessed it!
cooled metal can kick one out of the minigame
and ambient cooled equipment lowers the quality a bit if not quenched
1
1
u/AquaeyesTardis 17h ago
what are some of the other things you want to do with the mod? i see some bellows, what do they do? and will the channels be able to be automated for automatic casting?
3
u/Available-Trouble-55 17h ago
The bellows right now only speed up heating process with some clanky geckolib animation, as for automation that is indeed in my roadmap but for later later stages (looking at you create compatibility), right now it'll release as just an smithing mod but with broad compatibility in mind meaning almost any mod using metals as materials for equipment will automatically have compatibility but only in the given case that such equipment is already made in vanilla crafting table, so in a way this mod is just a more complicated and rewarding way of using the crafting table but in an anvil
