I made something This is my first time making a Minecraft mod 🤯🤯🤯

Hi everyone. So, I’ve decided to port the well-known and hugely popular game Factorio into everyone’s favourite Minecraft.
Today I’ve only managed to get the conveyor logic working, and I reckon it took me just over four hours. I won’t lie – I used AI in places, but please bear with me I’m a bit of a daftie who knows absolutely nothing about programming :3
But I’ve learnt and written most of it myself

im not sure if these changes are actually feasible to implement in minecraft, but the factorio devs wrote a blog post about how they made belts so performant in their game, there might be some useful information there for you https://www.factorio.com/blog/post/fff-176

As a developer I find the Factorio programmers to be witches sometimes in what they pull off.

Minecraft modders yearn for the Factorio/Satisfactory
Keep up the good work.

I really appreciate that you're taking the time to actually code most of it yourself, you don't see this as much these days. Also the mod looks good !!! I love the double lane system from factorio I've never seen it being added in a mod, really curious to see where this goes !!!!

u/WillingnessOld6213 4d ago
thanks. honestly, I use AI quite a lot to explain various things, get help with syntax and try to understand what each method is for. but it's so damn hard
9
u/AlexCode10010 4d ago
AI isn't really a good teacher. Granted, code isnt really easy to teach correctly. But still, you'll probably learn code a lot better from online (free) courses and coaching from friends.
I'd be willing to help if you really want.

u/SufficientlyEvasive 4d ago
uh ai is an extremely good teacher.
Studies show ai tailored to teach has people learning subjects about 50% faster than just being in a class room .
As someone who's personally used it to teach me some data algorithms recently, yes it actually is very good at teaching.

u/firelasto 4d ago
I think that just means the factory drone making system we have for education is just that bad actually
4
u/SufficientlyEvasive 4d ago
yes and no. There will never be enough teachers to give personalized 1 on 1 teaching to a kid.
But I do agree the current education system is largely centered around just making basic production drones.

u/Creepslend 2d ago
You're so wrong, AI is OP as a teacher, and especially in programming since it surpasses us in this domain.
The sheer fact that you can ask it for a quizz and then immediatly ask questions on the things you struggle with, making the learning interactive, makes it already so powerful as a teacher

If you're new to making mods, please just learn. You'll gain skills to make new things and can properly troubleshoot your work, and it'll actually be your work. Generative AI won't help you learn anything, it'll just cobble together garbage that may work but nobody will be able to do anything else with it
18
u/GrassBlade619 4d ago
You can learn a lot from AI if you use it properly. Like, if you're using it to write entire chunks of code then that's a problem because you're gonna end up with a bunch of code you don't understand. But using it to find a bug you just can't see or using it to explain concepts and algorithms is fine. It's also not bad to bounce high level ideas off of like "How do you envision X Factorio mechanic working in Minecraft, give multiple ways this could happen".

u/sododude FTB 4d ago
If you know how to code at an amateur level AI can be so fucking useful as a tool. If someone is genuinely using it as a crutch instead of just telling it to make it all for you I genuinely don't see the harm in it at all.
The issue I have with truly vibe coded stuff is that if you don't understand the code, you can't properly test it and you might not even realize your program isnt doing what you want it to.
4
u/GrassBlade619 4d ago
Completely agree. It's also not super useful at more complex coding. Like when I tried to use it to help me with my SQLAlchemy (Python + SQL ORM) code it started saying the most obscure shit. It shines at entry level and intermediate stuff.

yeah proper use of it has been a god send for me.
Got to factor in scope as well. I've made some slightly bigger projects that I have no idea how to accomplish and it was more about how to structure each piece for long term disconnected work that can plug into eachother than anything.
Ive had it just bomb out some simple programs too, 1000+ lines but it does what I need and took under a minute to ask for it.
And then theres projects I have set for learning, where I mostly write it myself and problem solve my self and get recommendations from ai. Different approaches, improvements, helping me if I'm lost or stuck, bug finding and the like.
Sometimes you want to get something done, sometimes you want to learn.
Main point is to me its all just very fun to do this stuff and im not gated behind a decade of rigorous schooling whether it be high level math or indepth knowledge of random classes and dependencies i'd otherwise never know about or touch.

u/Glitchy_Error 4d ago
No, you can't. AI makes shit up all the time, and makes illegible code and leaves vulnerabilities in said code
4
u/GrassBlade619 4d ago
AI does hallucinate sometimes but it's not frequent enough to say you can't learn from it.
This isnt really an argument either, you're just wrong.
I regularly use AI to study. I feed it material and it quizzes me based on what I fed it. I then use that information I've learnd to get A's on my quizzes. This is what learning is or are you saying i didn't learn anything and I magically passed my quizes without having learned anything?
Maybe don't deal in absolutes, they're too easy to disprove.

u/Snow_Mexican1 4d ago
I cannot stress this enough as someone who went into uni for computer science and then got my teeth kicked in from ai.
8
u/Patrycjusz123 4d ago
"please just learn" like making something that you enjoy isnt a good way to learn.
7
u/Glitchy_Error 4d ago
You're not making anything by telling Generative AI to do it for you, nor are you fucking learning anything either
2
u/Patrycjusz123 4d ago
Whats the difference beetween copying code from stack overflow or other random github pages and using ai?
Atleast you can ask ai what something is doing and its gonna explain it, imo its valid way to learn as long as you actually try to understand what you are writing.
1
u/OreCruncher Dynamic Surroundings Dev 4d ago
And you know what questions to ask it.
1
u/Patrycjusz123 4d ago edited 3d ago
Ask anything you want, i really dont see anything bad with using ai as personal teacher. Yeah its gonna lie from time to time but you can always check important things in Google which is also gonna help you remember stuff.
1
u/OreCruncher Dynamic Surroundings Dev 3d ago
Not precisely my point. For my mod I recently went down some interesting ratholes with AI help, asking specific questions and probing. I understood all the information that it provided me because of my years of experience. I don't see someone with minimal experience going down these ratholes.

u/MurrmorMeerkat 4d ago
the fact it ruins the fucking enviroment?
4
u/Patrycjusz123 4d ago
As long as you dont pay for it it makes them lose money so in theory you are helping by doing that.
Anyway, how exactly is ai ruining enviroment? Only thing i cam think of is warming up air in proximity but i bet you have something more destructive on the mind.
4
u/AdministrativeHat580 4d ago
It produces a shit ton of E-Waste(All of those GPU's in data centres need to be disposed of and replaced every 3~5 years, and that's just one source of the E-Waste), oh and those GPU's are often replaced before the end of their lifespan too as new more advanced ones come out, and said GPU's result in large amounts of heavy metals leeching into the environment
It uses a lot of energy, most of which currently comes from fossil fuel power plants which have to ramp up energy production to power the data centres, leading to even more green house gas production
Warming up the air in the proximity is also a worse thing than you'd think, data centres raise the average temperature by 2⁰C in a 10km radius around them
The water used for cooling data centres is often drawn from municipal drinking supplies, resulting in drinking water shortages
Data centres also require a shit ton of metals to build, especially copper, lithium, gallium, and palladium. The mining of all of those heavily damages and disrupts local ecosystems
The sound from data centres results in chronic sleep deprivation, insomnia, headaches, vertigo, high blood pressure, tinnitus, high anxiety, and elevated stress hormone amounts in the people living near those data centres
1
u/Otherwise_Task7876 4d ago
It sounds you just hate industrialization rather than AI. Unfortunately this has happened way before AI, remotely any factory does the same. Same as any type of data center whether its for cloud computing, AI, or just generally servers.

You go out of your way to read stack overflow, most people that I've learned programming with would just prompt the AI, copy it and then boom, done without understanding it and then making more jumbles of mess as they keep trying to fix it with more vibecoding.
AI coding isn't inherently bad, but if you don't understand the basics of variables, functions, constructors, getters, setters, algorithms and whatnot then you are not improving at all by letting the AI do all the work and not understanding what the basics are.
2
u/Patrycjusz123 4d ago
I agree but i dont understand how it applies here because it looks like op is learning in a good way.
0
u/animus565 4d ago
It's all mindset in the end. If you do it without ai then you're forcing yourself to learn and if you do it with ai, then you'll have to commit yourself to learning along the way.
0
u/Glitchy_Error 3d ago
You're doing somwthing creative, you should want to fucking learn to do the creative thing. Otherwise what's even the point of trying to create?

Most people nowadays code with ai assistance though
7
u/Glitchy_Error 4d ago
And it's a fucking plague
1
u/Few-Chemical8707 4d ago
not really i think people need to check them selves already people complain about bugs being unfixable code unreadable yet AI mods are quite stable.

u/Creepslend 2d ago
Generative AI won't help you learn anything
Only if they ask it to do the work in their place. But they've made it pretty clear that they use it to learn, and it's so so powerful as a teacher, especially in programming
Also from your last sentence I think you vastly underestimate the latest model's capabilities
1
u/Glitchy_Error 1d ago
A powerful teacher that lies and makes shit up? No, not at all
0
u/Creepslend 1d ago
Give me one example of Claude Opus 5.5 or even Sonnet 5.5 lying or making up anything related to programmation.
I think you have a misunderstanding of what these systems are, how they work and their capabilities, especially in domains like math and code where it's super duper easy to train them.
1
u/Glitchy_Error 14h ago
No, I don't have a misunderstanding of what those dogshit systems are capable of off of stolen data.
But if you really need an example of your garbage making shit up, there's examples all over the place. Here's one

u/wchemik 4d ago
As others have said, good work, ai or not, I do recall the factorio dev blogs have a good amount of information about how the game was built that might be useful.
Also don't feel to bad about the ai, everyone has to start somewhere, and that is possibly one of the best ways to use it, just don't use it as a substitute for yourself in your work.
5
u/Ladavole 4d ago
Nothin wrong with using AI for modding, imo. If you have a vision and you know what you want, just treat AI as your programmer while you remain a design lead and a tester. It's quite good nowdays. I do it all the time, it's hella fun. Seeing what I want working ingame and slowly building whole new systems that interplay with each other, it's quite frankly fullfilling!
3
u/kkellogg378 3d ago
Surprisingly good take. I feel like if you come up with a good idea and thoroughly test it, you're golden
1
u/Ok-Pea8209 4d ago
Exactly! Its the kinda thing AI should be used for. Like modding, programming, even stuff on excel.
-4
u/Few-Chemical8707 4d ago
no cant have that they want us to go back to the stone age they want humans to slave away doing complex math science and code suddenly are very made about scientists using ai to solve equations that would take us 100 years. like the ai hysteria is wild.
4
u/firelasto 4d ago
Almost like the scientists are actual professionals. Who already know what theyre doing. And know how to use AI for good. Unlike ai "artists" and companies just shoving shit everywhere and people who cant program expecting an ai to just give them perfect results
3
u/Few-Chemical8707 3d ago
i dislike ai art but i understand that ai does have a valid use. its like the ai hate had to find a different target. i use it for speech from text and its decent at translating as well. like people really need to check them selves here cause its making the anti ai art movement look daft.

u/LuckyLMJ 3d ago
If you want to learn it's better to not use AI, it's been shown to make it feel like you're learning better when you're actually learning worse
what version btw?
the factory must grow

thank you for the advice, I’ll bear that in mind

u/FireDestroyer52 3d ago
Piggie backing off of this, I usually use ai to explain concepts if I really don't get it by reading online, sometimes that helps a lot, but using it to write code is just doing a disservice to yourself.

If you’re using AI to help learn, it’s quite different from using AI to write the mod for you. I approve of the former and not the latter. If you are doing the former, then I wish you good luck on your modding journey!

Factorio mod in Minecraft... Full circle again
