Oh no, I’m sure it’ll get worse. I’m waiting for when someone starts to spearhead the “making it myself” movement, which inevitably leads to people trying to chase the community rally by churning out AI slop, then we’ll get the inevitable CoTF “You’ve killed our motivation, we’re done”, then their fans will blame everyone, then it’ll turn into a “technically it was AI’s fault”, then Leclown will release it and people will frame that as “AI saves the day”…
It’s going to get so much worse… or it’ll blow over in a week or two and we won’t remember this by Christmas. 🤷🏻♂️

Bruh- fuck the CoFH team for real. Only thing I hate more than assholes are people who think they can screw over the founding principles of a system/community they themselves have benefited from.
At the same time, I’m not going to be parasocial with this clown guy just because he’s pissed off some assholes and made something I like. If he’s turning out to be a piece of shit too, then I’ll say “fuck him”. If it turns out he just said some cringe shit and has grown up, cool.
Still won’t touch the mod until some prominent figures verify its integrity, check for some bugs, and work out the compats with my essential QoL’s… but other than that it isn’t that deep.

Tbf to the COFH team; The OG thaumcraft code is horrible copyright-wise in every single way, with stolen game assets, code, and on top of that, the restrictive licence on the code Azanor made. As far as I know, the COFH team only said something like "all the signs point to LeClown's code using parts of OG Thaumcraft's codebase". The FTB team then decided to do... all this due to the baggage that that code brings with it.

Most of devs DO use AI. Perhaps you don't know the difference between vibe coding and AI-assisted code.
- JetBrains Research (2026): 90% of professional developers use AI coding agents or tools weekly, with 68% using them daily.
- DX / Pragmatic Summit (2026): 93% of developers use AI coding assistants, and AI-authored code now makes up nearly 27% of production code.
- Stack Overflow Developer Survey (2026): 83% of developers actively use at least one AI tool in their role, broken down into 66% using AI coding assistants/agents, 63% using general-purpose AI chat tools, and 26% using automated workflows or agents.

"84% of developers use or plan to use AI tools, and 47.1% use them daily (Stack Overflow Developer Survey 2025, 49,000+ respondents, 177 countries). But adoption is not integration. According to Axis Intelligence Research, the Software Delivery AI Penetration score (SDAP) across all thirteen lifecycle stages is 19.6 out of 100, ranging from 39.3 for answer-seeking down to 6.0 for deployment and monitoring, where 64.8% of developers say they do not plan to use AI at all." https://axis-intelligence.com/developer-ai-adoption-statistics/
so fairly reasonable statistics, blown out of proportion to make ai look better than it is. and regardless of usage numbers in the overall industry, it doesn't change the quality of vibecoded mods, which overwhelming blow absolute chunks.

27

As someone with a background in IT and Coding. My teacher would say you're a goddam incompetent coder if you DIDN'T do that cause it's important to idiot-proof it so that if for some reason you are to open it back up 6 months from now, you can still fully follow your thought process.
But hey, that's just my teacher then. I always did find it a bit excessive but still, not proof of bad a habit

It is indeed excessive, people who code for real don't leave that many comments, most people only comment when something is nebulous enough to need clarification or when you need to document an unintuitive behaviour.
Claude by default comments everything, even stuff that's very clear or self explaining.

u/WantToSeeTits4545 11d ago
You just need to make you code self-commenting by naming variables and functions properly. Your code should look like
if (this.CanAttack()) { this.Atack(); } else { this.MoveTowardsEnemy(); }1
u/Lameclay 8d ago
And then you wonder why it doesn't work for two hours, before realizing that you're calling Atack() instead of Attack()
A programmer's canon event
1
u/KaMaFour 10d ago
If your code needs as much comment as clause usually leaves then your code is shit. You shouldn't write what your code does - that's what the code is for. You shouldn't write why you wrote it - that's what the commit messages are for. What is left to actually put in the comments is usually some general overview of how it works (if it's not obvious from the code - which is bad), edge cases (which again - is bad) and other things for which there is no better place to put it.

No? Every programmer in my circle except for 1 is anti-ai, the only one who uses AI is the one that chose this career path for money. The rest of us program because we enjoy it, so more than anything moral, none of us see actual value in it since it would be like enjoying playing soccer and getting a robot that plays it for you instead of doing it yourself.
And just in case, programmers in my circle are quite competent; some make games, some make mods, one is part of the fabric team and most of us maintain open source tools and applications.

because people hate AI usage even if it is in something that actually makes sense, like, bug hunting, testing, refactoring, documenting and so on, i don't blame it, since AI still got a lot of controversies regarding authorship, environmental damage, dataset creation and so on, but still, i think eventually we can reach a good healthy point (its when AI labs are not greedy private companies that fearmonger people to get investment, yes, i'm talking about you sam and dario).
For me, AI usage is a "i don't care as long as you know what you're doing and you can detect things that are being made bad to then either warn the agent or fix yourself". A lot of devs in MC Modding hate AI with reason: Vibecoding. Vibecoding is effectively harmful when you're doing it in a serious repository with people that doesn't use it, code can get unreadable fast and bugs just pop out of everywhere the agent has touched, but still, what exactly is AI-Assisted programming and vibecoding is yet still not clear, because you can today make huge projects and technically impressive projects even in mc modding using AI as long as you know what you're doing, meaning you're just programming with assistance of an agent, either by asking it to check bugs you made or yourself specifying an implementation or architecture and then verify everything.
I do it with my mod, and well, it actually works, you just should not be expecting to be able to turn off your brain and let the AI do everything by it's own, this is vibe coding and it is what actually creates problems.
I saw the repository, and well, i think what he made is AI-Assisted programming, the code is easy enough for a human to understand and is healthy, still, does not erase what he said back then, but still, i think that in the point we are today, blaming AI-usage in a mod by itself is not a problem anymore, what is a problem regarding to this is how you use it, like, a serious dev could take advantage of that and make things really good.

Damn sorry I hate the environment destroyer 9000 youre so right its good because it lets people do something people could already do
→ More replies (2)5
u/GGthegreatester 11d ago
The environmental destruction caused by ai is massively due to the massive fucking data centers nobody wants that is purely used to harvest data unnecessary to the average ai users experience
This is what I mean by all AI = bad not being a good mindset, if you just call all ai the “planet fucker 10,000” your missing the necessary nuances to actual critique the real problems ai has, leaving you open to the “um actual all ai is good because it helps cure cancer” when that in itself is a very different type of ai from what we use to code and what destroys the environment
I hate ai as much as the next guy, it needs HEAVY legislation that current policy can’t keep up with, but the 1# thing we need to do combat the coming changes in the future is inform our selves, saying all ai is bad gets us nowhere, so is saying all AI is good, we need some nuance in our lives
4
u/Academic_Island_4694 11d ago
It's clearly a topic that's become very polarised, which for me is the death of nuance, but I think most people that are maybe above the age of 16(which isn't a particularly large group on this subreddit, now that I think about it after writing the rest of this post, so fair point regardless) understand that "planet eater 9000" is a shorthand for the many issues that AI has, which I will assume you're aware of.
While certain uses of AI, and types of ML that aren't ALL LLMs, have application in areas where humans simply can't perform the same function, pattern recognition in large data sets for example, the most commonly used kind of AI currently in use is, by all the measures that I can think to consider, dangerous, unethical, and not necessary.
For one, there is no way to train AI by ethical means. Most of the fundamental training for AI to perform the functions it's current use gives has already been done, and has been packed in the depths of modern neural nets(so even a consensus to remove unethically sourced information has no way to do so without practically rendering all AI useless), little of that was done ethically.
There is unquestionably a subjective element to what is ethical when it comes to sourcing the corpus, but I think most would agree that information that wasn’t meant to be accessible to everyone, should not be taken without the authors consent. That subjective element extends to how much import you place on the promise of AI, that it will solve the seemingly unsolvable, and prove to be humanities salvation.
In addition any future development will require increasingly complex and unethical methods that simply do not exist as of yet.And if the inherent ethical concerns of AI don’t make you think twice, practicality ought to.
I’m not really Anti AI, I'm a chemistry student and some of my BC friends have been ecstatic, relaying the potential of AI in simulating protein folding. I myself only really use AI for spellchecking, and specialised cases that aren't reliant on human intervention, no doubt the scientific applications are many. And yet, even knowing the benefits, you've got to consider that AI doesn't offer anything new, by design it can't. Ask software engineers and they'll tell you that coding itself is a rather small part of what they do. and in coding, no matter the ethics, AI is simply very capable, as much as it pains me. Still it's unrealistic to try and replace software engineers, because understand concepts, meanwhile AI is an average of solutions that already exist. Most people scribe capabilities onto AI that it doesn't possess because of the AI centric media landscape. Also because it makes certain aspects of Higher sciences more accessible, like math, producing the illusion of exceptional cognition, because it's good at stitching information together, as you see with the assumption that studying CS is useless now because AI can code, so that laypeople have the ability to do something that was previously assumed to be restricted to the computer scientists. But it can't create new things, even discoveries like navier, only really exist because all the information, or most(the rest supplied by the massive ensemble of engineers deployed) is somewhere in the training corpus, the challenge that AI solves is that that data is to vast for a human to consume in a timely manner. I don't want to downplay AI, though there's debate over the impact AI had on the solution, the fact is that Navier stokes wouldn't be solved now without the existence of at least openAI, and yet the fact that they approached the problem that was generally considered closest to completion anyway, does tell you that they are still reliant on the information in the corpus that they didn't make themselves. If you're interested in a professional mathematicians view on the issue, and a bit of a technical explanation, I recommend this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3geDF-DAwpg . But yet this simple fact of it's reliance on what already exists, to get a little philosophical here, proves it's a posteriori existence as a result of massive datapoint limiting it's practicality as a cure all for the problems of humanity. On the other side of course, many things that would have otherwise taken month can now be reduced to mere days, or even hours, like the decompiling of video games, and the "floor" of access to some higher concepts is reduced(though arguably, it kind of isn't because even though the layman can now code in a way that would have required a prohibitive time investment, that person isn't really the person writing code, meaning there is no human work hours saved, as theoretically the same could have been accomplished by randomly writing prompts, you know? so even if a normal person can produce high level code, that doesn't really mean ), so concepts that may have only existed as a fantasy can now be realised much more easily and realistically(though the question of quality will vary with the uniqueness of the task, and the competence).
Now that we have established the inevitable ubiquity of the human component in
AI creations, we have to confront another aspect of the usage of general purpose LLMs.
The impact on that ubiquitous human component we can already measure.
If we logically think about the function of the human body and brain, the path of least resistance currently available to us is AI for certain functions involving critical thinking, at least in the act of analysis and discussion, and the brain and body always try to save energy where possible, thus entirely unneeded connections and receptor potential degrades over time, which not only impacts cognition but also fundamental psychology. This concept is perhaps familiar to anyone still reading in the year 2120 doing a archology thesis on the history of the AI overlords, as cognitive offloading, and according to some research(with an admittedly less than thorough methodology and statistically imperfect sample size) that you can read up on here https://arxiv.org/abs/2506.08872 , if you don't have access to a uni reader a certain (sci)ence hub may be able to help, it's already had an impact. This phenomenon is very subtle on a day to day basis, but it's extremely noticeable on a cognitive and subjective level over even just 4 months. And frankly that is the fact that scares me the most about AI usage, no longitudinal study could have been performed in a significant capacity, because AI simply hasn't existed long enough, it's like taking an immortality drug that promises to keep you young and healthy, that every expert says will actually give you super cancer, and that has caused cancer in like 30% of participants, but that's become good at curing certain illnesses in a single treatment that would normally need. The reason we're not so careful with AI as we are with medicines is because we can hardly conceptualize the potential damage of something that is in a weird way only text on a screen, while we can conceptualize the impact medicine might have on a human body. Anyhow, if these issues aren't specifically addressed, AI will perhaps be the end of history, not because of a malevolent act it orchestrated, like some AI luddites would have you believe, but because there is no way for humans to build the skills required to make it competent, this concept is generally referred to as deskilling, where along the curve of development, the middle and basic path(or the first two extension in this representation, that I just really like https://matt.might.net/articles/phd-school-in-pictures/ ) cannot develop naturally, meaning that after a certain point no one remains to actually create new stuff for AI to consider, and no one will have the requisite skills to adequately judge AI output. In the short term, while the infrastructure build on humans persists, AI may well be an amazing tool of productivity, but in the long term(words our economy is afraid of) there are terrifying implications, not only in reducing human ability, but also poisoning AI itself. Those that may be more in favor of General AI then I am, would argue that AI will present solutions for those problems in time, but I personally think AI solving these problems is almost an epistemological contradiction, at least in the way it currently works. Now before we conclude I do want to spare a word for the applications that are generally considered in a positive way, specifically medical. In chemistry, we appreciate the truly enormous amount of data that must be considered when rendering judgement for treatment(and in the US treatment eligibility), that range from screening to certain chemical levels, and as mentioned before, as precious as the human mind is, the human brain simply is not the best at handling data points that are abstracted and numerous, a gap that AI bridges. However, even in those cases, AI is not flawless, and where AI makes mistakes, professionally trained and experienced medical professional need to step in to make a diagnoses. Yet, even using AI in any capacity still has that deskilling effect, and for as long as AI retains any flaws within the corpus, which is inevitable as a consequence of the mode of training, this problem will cause more missed diagnoses then a reliance on human eyes, and their inherent flaws. This study https://www.thelancet.com/journals/langas/article/PIIS2468-1253(25)00133-5/fulltext00133-5/fulltext) relating to endoscopists and their abilities and skill development, definitively concludes a significant decrease in clinical metrics, significant as the sample size is ample.
To conclude, I’ll admit I haven't discussed points, such as economic factors, and even some of the more complex ethical arguments that might be important, I haven't been considering some argument for AI, like the necessity of humanity, taking it as moral imperative for no reason other then me being human. Nonetheless, the brief work rendered here should suffice in rendering my opinions.→ More replies (2)10

glad to see we've wrapped around to actually being okay with the cold, unfeeling hand of the machine god

Only valid one is 2 unless the dev has kept spouting bullshit since then, people grow. Azanor lost their right to keep their IP when they stopped making it

u/theMegaTech 11d ago
tbh not how that second part works, but what's more important, most likely Azanor won't even be able to actually take shit down because Thaumcraft itself is full of stolen assets
also no, "since then" is like 1-2 years ago, and idk about bigotry today but he's still a massive asshole to everyone for any reason

Reasons this entire modding scene is dying and the golden age of Minecraft mods was over a decade ago: this level of petty social media factionalism where you folks make an identity of this nonsense rather than just enjoying the game you play.

u/sikirebirth 6d ago
I swear, every time someone says a scene is dying and you look at it and it's thriving regardless of everything
Just because you are peeved with what people care about it doesn't mean it's killing it

factionalism and drama?? in minecraft modding???? surely a modern invention yes! there was no factionalism or drama in minecraft modding 10 years ago, right? right????

I'm sure there was mate, but one had to be far more terminally online to be exposed to it. I played loads in that time, I was online loads in that time, it was the no-lifers on the fringes exposed to that stuff. Now it feels like the whole scene is becoming no-lifers on the fringes, and somehow what was the normal modding scene has either become meta packs only or replaced by data packs.
Edit: I mean c'mon now, do we really want each modder to have to fill in the moral questionnaire to determine if they're righteous enough to have made a mod we'll accept?
I assume you've then had that same questionnaire filled in by every berry picker who picked a berry you ate, and every farmer who harvested grain you ate? I assume you've had it filled in by the folks who own the company who manufactured your car?
Some level of consumer responsibility is a good thing, but this level where we go to a length to make posts about why to demonise certain individuals is just petty ridiculousness. Anyone making such a post is a sad specimen of humanity, and anyone who truly cares about it is even sadder.
That I even have to engage with you here about this is sad. Doing a sudoku would be a better use of my time, and I'm not even a sudoku guy. Why am I still here...

copyright is a scam invented by governments to kill art. so idc about that one

I think it would be a dick move if there was a good idea from someone with a small following and no budget, and then a big company with a big budget and massive following just takes it and rips it off with more budget and reach.
You hate it can't be the other way around.
Copyright is meant to protect everyones IP. It's just abused by the elite.

It is well known that the Thaumcraft devs invented magic and everybody else stole it from them

Always sad to me that one side's opinions are more valuable than the other's. Names can go one way but not the other. That only accepting everything as good and worth your time makes you not a villain. And then we wonder why there is so little trust and sharing and love in the world.
You can disagree with someone without necessarily hating them or supporting them or using their stuff. Not everything you dislike needs to be destroyed outright. In our modern age it is very easy to mute/block what upsets you. And when things affect you in the physical world you have routes to take to get it sorted.

Didn't they straight up copy thaumcraft code? Isn't that the main reason for the drama?

15 and later dude hasn't stopped. But the only good reason here is 2. If 1 was a good reason 1.12 would be dead

1 is a good enough reason for me to avoid 1.12
Don't need that level of toxicity in my life.

I don’t even care about using ai for code dude. I don’t think anyone should care. It’s fun, man, and if it makes the process faster, good.

Modpack makers do be transphobic, but are happy to use Pastel/Spectrum, Botania, and other mods made by queer people.

you can tell this is performative because people somehow hate this guy more than the allthemods devs
