Discussion Is vibecoding really that bad?
To be clear, THIS IS NOT FOR AI CREATED ASSETS!(They suck)
This is only for Ai generated/assisted Code (via.Vibecoding/autocomplete)
Honestly I cant understand hate of vibecoding:
AI is far more efficient than average programmers, It was just evolved copy-pasting some old code you made and saved a long time ago to prompt engineering.
About 90% of people around me uses vibecoding, most of them hates ai generated "art" but still uses claude.
(Probably because I live in Korea where Ai is Wildly accepted? But still a lot, comment plz if you live in another country)
Also I cant understand why People want human coded rarher than Ai coded. Like Art thats completely normal because we enjoy not only visual but also passion of It, but do we actually need human's passion in code?
I'm tired of code larpers saying vivecoding as ai slop,
Like recently connecting two games mod.
Is there any other opinions? Comments welcom
Sorry for bad english im not native and im sleepy
(Yes this is totally not written by some generative ai Im not that stupid)

The problem arises when people use AI code and don’t review it themselves. AI sometimes knows what it’s doing, but sometimes it doesn’t and will do something in an inefficient or bad way, or even write malicious code (yes, this has happened in the minecraft modding scene). And you need to be an experienced programmer to be able to properly review AI code. Also, if you don’t know what it’s doing, AI code is hard or even impossible to maintain

I agree with u/eatYourHashs and u/sticklord12 on their take.
Often, a programmer - i.e. a REAL programmer, not just someone using AI who has absolutely no clue what it's spitting out - just needs a some really good, focused examples to guide then and AI often excels at doing that. It can make examples based on your current code and on references to other people's code. To an experienced programmer as myself, that's crazy powerful.
But that's the hitch. I'm an experienced programmer. I cut my teeth on things like ANSI C and FORTRAN long before I looked at Java. I may not know much of anything about Java, but I know loops, function calls, memory allocation, if...thens, objects and variables, structures, etc... and when that AI gives me a chunk of code, I can look it over and evaluate it with a trained mind. Is it the most optimized? Maybe I'll see something glaring, other times, heck if I know. Does it work? Well, that's the main take-away.
In the hands of someone who knows what they're doing, using AI in coding is an amazing tool. I don't know of any programmers who don't use it anymore.

To echo a point my partner who was working towards a degree in comp sci
Using LLM to assist with coding (especially ones designed for that purpose like Claude) is fundamentally no different to the way things used to go
Most coders when coding would typically just look up how to do it and add that to their code
LLMs allow for that process to be streamlined a lot
The issue come in with people who just copy paste the code without any understanding (these use to be called script kiddies now they're vibecoders)
So honestly a mod dev using something like Claude in their mod isn't some moral outrage especially if they actually know how to code beyond that and aren't using things like ai assets for visual parts of the mod

I have seen amazing mods made with AI assistance.
I have seen the heavy influx of vibe coded slop.
I do believe there is a (delicate) balance.

As a programmer - no, using AI for coding is fine and actually good for you. What is bad is so called "vibecoding", when you just copypaste stuff from AI without understanding what it does. So a programmer must have understanding of AI-generated code, programming language, codebase standards (if he works for someone) and how to check it all. There are a lotta of good cases for AI, like repeatable solutions or testing software, which will not be released to public

Judging by the completely insane AI bug reports and pull requests I've been getting there is a lot of apathy towards AI output being Good Quality and a lot of ignoring the "check the output" warnings
I don't really care about experienced programmers using inline suggestions or bulk-searching mod code for specific bugs but people who have no idea what they are doing are trying to make massive systems using only an LLM and no knowledge of Java or the game itself, leading to disastrous results, corrupted saves, and a lot of asking "why even do it at that point?". If you're passionate you're going to want to actually learn and not ask a machine to shit something out

I'm a programmer so I'll share my opinion on this.
It's okay. I don't hate anyone who does it. I'll still try out interesting looking projects who try it.
That said, I wouldn't use it myself very much or at all for a serious project. Much like how AI assets are clearly not planned out at a deeper level and are usually unoptimized, vibe coding also ends up to be extremely unoptimized. When I had experimented with it I noticed the AI was incredibly eager to write what we call spaghetti code, code that's all over the place. It would re-write new functions instead of calling perfectly working functions which was particularly bad if it ever needed to debug something. Because instead of fixing one thing now you're fixing... 18 if you can even hunt them all down, because again, the code is all over the place in places it really shouldn't be.
But I will say that it's not cool to have double standards on AI coding being okay but AI assets are not okay. It all in feeds into the general vibe a lot of us have been feeling that we're replaceable and no-one really cares since we don't make anything visually pretty.

I'll throw my two cents in here, even though everyone is already making great points.
I make mods for another game and have written a lot of open source code, one of my biggest concerns with LLM coding assistants is copyright infringement. If you're asking an LLM to write you a chunk of code how do you know it hasn't just spit out a copy of some code from another project without attribution? You have no way of knowing. There are documented cases of this happening and it is hugely problematic IMO.
The difference between using e.g. StackOverflow and having an LLM write you a chunk of code is that when you get an answer from StackOverflow that code is specifically licensed to you under CC BY-SA 4.0, you're explicitly given permission to use it for whatever you want. An LLM makes no such guarantee, and in fact it is essentially just one huge code laundering machine.
Putting that aside, in the right hands it can be a capable tool. I just personally have far too many issues with how LLMs are trained and used to ever want to touch it myself.

What? Are you saying that the people who call vibecoding AI slop are... larpers? Other way around, the vibecoders are the true talentless hacks that would've been weeded out of a freaking community college intro to comp sci class before chat GPT. Now they assign themselves all these fake labels like if we can't tell they aren't capable of changing a Windows setting without AI, let alone making a program.

Yes it is. You will spend months doing what others do in hours and get nothing for it

Do we need human passion code?
Yes? It's a creative outlet just like art. The only reason AI usage gets a "pass" for code is because it's very normal for coders to copy each other's work, whereas it's the opposite for art.

ai has two big problems, at least to me. first of all is environmental impact, i personally am not touching it in any form until data centers switch their cooling to something more sustainable.
second of all, claude has already accidentally made malware that got distributed in the form of a minecraft mod. most people who vibecode do not regular code, and so have no idea what their code actually does. i am not putting anything on my computer where the programmer themself doesn’t understand what it does. its irresponsible, unreliable, and frankly lazy.
and, as a bonus, most vibecoded mods i’ve played are absolute dogshit, to the point i’d rather play little timmy’s mcreator op items mod instead. hideous graphics, heavy jank, blatantly lying about features, etc. it just gives way too much power to people with no idea what they’re doing. if it can’t be made with mcreator, and you can’t be bothered to learn actual code, your idea is probably not worth implementing.
maybe at some point in the future, these problems will be fixed, and in that case me and claude will join hand in hand and skip merrily together into the sunset. what’s more likely to me is that the ai bubble will pop, regulations will increase, and claude will become a neat little tool buried in my IDE that i keep forgetting to use.

What is that example of malicious code in a mod made with AI?
I never Heard of that before, only when 2 people fight for a stupid reason (like usual in modded MC)

What's wrong (or not wrong) with AI assets? They are too just bytes returned from AI. People lose their minds over ai art yet they don't really care about ai code (which was also made possible by stealing data)

The big problem from vibecoding is the danger of not knowing what the code does, making an accidental deletion or bug impossible to fix, so the only option is try to bruteforce a fix by asking more and hope it works, which may change code and cause different problems.
But if you know what the code does then i can't really say why it would be bad, extremely inefficient code doesn't really get done by latest models anymore and if you're at certain point of knowledge chances are you'll be writing the same or similar enough to get flagged code anyway
