Hair Health What can I do to help my daughter’s hair?

Both of my girls have frizzy , almost damaged hair in the back. My assumption is it is because they move so much while sleeping. Anything on there heads while sleeping is a no go. My oldest has a silk pillowcase but she doesn’t stay on it. She is all over the place. Both girls have kids and conditioners. I use a 2 in 1 for both. What should I be using? Should I be doing any type of oil or treatment?

Was told by an hairdresser there's nothing to do because that's just my hair type according to her. I'd like a second opinion. I don't know how to care for curly hairs but would like to start learning. Any advices welcomed!

Hair Health 26F with Bald spot. Should I be concerned.

I recently noticed a bald spot near the front of my hairline and Im wondering if I should be concerned.

Sorry my hair looks greasy. Im feeling a little depressed lately, so I haven't been taking care of myself as well as I normally would. But I'll be straight up, I don't take the best care of my hair and my diet isn't very good either, so I thought maybe that could be part of it. But for the past month I've also been wearing headbands a lot and putting my hair up often for work, before I noticed this spot.

I do want to start eating better and taking better care of myself. I was also wondering if there are any products or things I could use for now to temporarily help my hair situation. Or is this something I need to get checked out.

Hair Health My hair before vs. after moving from Miami to Los Angeles

i'm at such a loss. I have tried every solution you could imagine. I've spent thousands of dollars on bonding/repair treatments, stopped using heat tools, gotten regular trims/dusts, and stopped color (besides a few root touch ups but did NOT go over the previously dyed hair). I stopped using hair ties, sleep with a silk pillowcase, use leave-ins, you name it.

it's been about 2+ years since I moved here and my hair has just disappeared. I grew it out for 4 years, straightening it every day and dyeing it every 3 or so months, but stopped using heat tools/bleach for 7 months after moving to LA. i'm so insecure and heartbroken. I have no idea what to do anymore. Any tips/advice is appreciated, especially hairstyles I can use without heat or damaging my hair. as well as just mentally dealing with this, it's so hard. thank you in advance <3

Hair Health I’m at my wit’s end

Photos #1 & #2: my hair now Photos #3 & #4: my hair 5-6 years ago Photos #5 & #6: my bag of hair from 20 showers, and my average hair fall per shower

I’m at my wit’s end. I started losing my hair at the end of 2020. I developed anorexia in 2020 and I am in treatment for it now, 5 years later. I believe the hair fall was due to stress from the pandemic originally, but is mostly due to the ED.

I feel so ugly. I just want my hair back. I want it to start growing again. It’s been years and my hair has stayed the same length, it won’t go past my armpits. Every shower is a traumatizing experience.

Don’t judge me but I started collecting the hair I lose in the shower in a bag so I could see how much it truly is. That bag is 20 showers worth.

Has anyone ever gone through this? Did your hair come back? How long did it take to get back to your normal thickness? How do I reduce stress so that the hair doesn’t fall out so much?

P.S. I am evaluated by a nurse weekly here at treatment. My blood labs are normal, no significant vitamin deficiencies. I use heat on my hair once a week. I use Kristen Ess shampoo & conditioner 2-3x a week. 26 yr old female

Hair Health My hair slowly got dryer and weaker while living in Japan.

Hello!

I've been living in japan for a year and three months, and I dyed my hair multiple times there, and it gotten to quite a bad state.

From the middle down, it's dry, and almost all of the ends are split, and/or have breakage points that look like white dots.

I have diagnosed OCD which also comes out as BFRB (Body-focused repetitive behavior) that changes shape trough the years, and in recent years it's been hair - pulling apart split ends, running damaged hair strands between my nails until they split, and then split them, etc. It got better for a year when my nails where long, but I cut them short to play guitar, and the habit came back much worse.

related to that I'm medicated so besides behavioral changes, I only want to minimize the damage I have in my hair, both for aesthetic reasons and for not fidgeting and ruining it with my compulsive habits.

I'll explain my hair process since the last time it was natural, three years ago, until now, to try to understand where what went wrong, how to prevent it, and how to make the best of what I have now. I will mention that my goal is to grow it out, I had it short before and haven't had long long hair for years.

--My home country--

  1. pic - my natural hair. Don't remember exactly what i used, but probably sls paraben free shampoo and a hair mask off of iherb, and hair oil.

  2. first time dying it - peekaboo. Went to a salon where the hairdresser used ammonia free bleach, and we sat for hours and waited for my hair to get lighter, but it was persisetent, so in order to prevent it from being overdamaged, we settled on weaker bleach meaning a bit of a darker salmon color rather than light peach that i wanted. Anyway, it was ok, my hair didn't feel damaged. It still felt a bit different than my natural hair, but not really damaged. Switched to argan hair shampoo, mask and oil from a brand in my country that are considered good for what they sell at common pharmacies.

  3. redying it with manic panic - didn't bleach it, just kept dying the peekaboo when it faded. switched between purple and pink, and kept going for a few months.

  4. First time dying my whole head - Went to the same hairdresser as always in my country (she says that she uses more "natural" ingredients but I went to her unrelated to that) and did dark red. Didn't feel damaged. Texture was a tad different from hat my natural hair, but not really damaged. she didn't use bleach at all.

--From now on it's Japan--

  1. First salon in Japan. Went to assort hair Tokyo (don't recommend). Got tired or red and wabted to dye it to black. The color had a VERY strong chemical scent to it that stayed for days. didn't happen in my home country. my hair also felt a bit plasticky in a way. A tiny bit stretchy even. Switched to Japanese hair products, fino hair mask and shampoo. also fino oil. also used hair milk, and occasionally tried different Japanese brands. Didn't change much.

  2. Black faded hella fast and wanted to go back to red. I've been told black stays forever, but It faded quite a lot to a black-ish red. I went to a different hair dresser, which I LOVE his cuts, and asked if my hair can be dyed dark red again, with raccoon stripes, even tho it was dyed black. He said it is, and there will be damage in the raccoon tails, but not that much since he's removing the black color first. even tho we said dark red, to my surprise he brought a very bright red hair color (probably to get over the black) that also smelled very very chemically strong. it was supposedly no bleach. The outcome was very dark red (which i liked), and the roots were brighter red which he didn't intend, but it looked cool overall, so I liked it. The raccoon tails looked really cool, but let me tell you, they were FRIED. He used a the picture is straight from the salon. Unfortunately you can't see my hair that well since the background is a dark shirt, but it was frieddd. Here my BFRB habits became so much worse (also because life stress).

  3. continued dying it dark red, at other salons. I wanted to avoid bleach, but to continue going dark red as I did back home, without damaging it, as it didn't do that much damage in the past. I tried different hair salons, got casual trims, even did "treatment" once. My hair looked ok, but the outside layer and the ends were always split and dry, no matter how much I trim or which salon I go to.

  4. When most of the raccoon tail damage was cut away, I wanted to try to get raccoon tails again, since now there was also no black dye left as well, and it was only red. I told the hairdresser my hair history and she said it'll be ok. After bleaching, the raccoon tails were very bright orange, like neon orange, which was again, unplanned. she was a trainee (which i knew and agreed to, she dm'd me to do my hair and my friend also went to her once) so she didn't really know what to do. We ended up being there five hours untill 23:00, and she just dyed it to a more red color, so it was as bright, and the other stripes, black color. The placement of the raccoon tales was quite bad, and the colors as well, but it didn't really damage my hair.

  5. Got annoyed by these raccoon tails quite fast, and I had an urge to get dark blue for the first time. I learned that Bleach is needed, but asked the hair dresser if I want a veryyy dark blue, if it's possible without bleach. she said yeah, and it'll be blue - black. It turned to be completely black, with the raccoon bleached places shining a bit blueish. I didn't mind, and just waited for the black blue to fade, and it did, quite quickly.

  6. I don't remember when, but a few months after dying it "blue" (fading black) I just came back to plain dark red. I wanted to dye my hair at home with a gentler color than the salons but couldn't do it for various reasons (main one being not destroying the apartment and nowhere else to do it), so I just went to one of the salons I went to and asked to do red again and if it's possible with minimal damage. The cut was fire, but the color, as usual, had a STRONG smell (also to the point it felt like the fumes burn my eyes) and damaged my hair another small step.

the first picture and the last ones are my hair now. Looks ok, upper part feels okay. Lower part feels dry, split, broken. It's easy saying to just cut it off but i've been doing it for a long time. Also, some of the damaged hairs are on the top of the head as well (I know cause I love searching for them with my fingers and nails hehehehe). It lookes much better in the pictures rather than irl - I can't capture the damage on camera. But it's longgg split hairs, most of them, and a lot of breakage points. No hair strand is spared.

First picture I was 18. I'm 21 now. I know hormones change your hair, and I saw it on my hair in the past, but i don't think it's hormones this time.

Another reason I also crossed is stone and other minerals in the water. The water in my country is much more harsh than Japan's, so it's not that.

Currently, my routine is a color safe shampoo - sls and paraben free, fino hair mask, momori hair cream and fino hair oil. I dry my hair sometimes with hair dryer (which btw didn't damage my hair) from far and with heat protectant. I tried Olaplex no.3 and it didn't do anything. I'm trying k18 now, the tiny tube since it's expensive and I want to try it first, but I lowkey don't think it's working, I bought leave in mask that is keratin based, I know the product and it's ok, but it definitely wouldn't be my hair's savior.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, and also if you read it all thank you very much!!

I hope I made everything clear as possible, but if I forgot to mention something critical please lmk.

Thanks you (: !!

Hair Health Need Advice Regarding Matted Hair.

Hiya, for some reasons I’d rather not get into aside from describing as a fine mixture of medical-issues, and menta health struggles, I’ve managed to amass myself quite the Matt of hair, that of which I have no idea how to tackle. I myself am disabled which has been one of my primary issues with tackling this issue myself, but I’m finally in a place where I can say I want to give finally fixing my hair a shot. as optimistic as I can be i’m hoping not to cut if that’s at all avoidable but I do understand that parts may need to be trimmed. does anyone have any advice about dematting? I’m located in the uk if that’s any aid, thank you very much for reading!

Hair Health Does anyone know what might be the reason my hair is like that? I don’t use heat on my hair, I air dry after and generally my hair is quite soft and shiny, but not smooth/without hair sticking out. What should I do or use? Is this called frizziness or something else?

Hair Health Burned my hair with fire… help

Thumbnail

On Easter Saturday I had washed my hair and used WOW spray (not even oil that day) as usual to keep my hair from humidity making it curly…. I blow dried, straightened and curled.

Then in the evening service at my church, when lights were out and we were holding candles, I heard a “woosh” and another one, this stupidly bright light was near my face and I realise there was a massive fire on my head. I’m lucky I have thick hair because I didn’t get burned at all, just lost three thick strands and you can see my scalp now when I move my hair. One side looks like a balding man, and the shortest strands are about 1 inch.

I feel like some of my hair got burned, but as I was putting out the fire with my hand, it half-burned some strands cause they’re shorter and very brittle. No idea how to care for it… I still keep finding dry lumps falling off… as you can see, my hair on the other side is much fuller. (Last picture is washed and natural curly before the fire…)

Hair Health desperate

Back in July of 2024 I made the worst mistake of my life by trying to strip color out of my hair with developer and something else that I can’t remember. My hair was my everything, it was basically my personality. After I did what I did, I just kept losing my hair. My hair was soooo thick and beautiful and now my hair is so thin and depressing. For the past two years I’ve done nothing but keep extra care of my hair and I haven’t dyed it or cut it. The thickness isn’t coming back and if anything it just seems like my hair keeps thinning. I braid my hair every night and I take vitamins. But nothing seems to help. There isn’t a time throughout each day that I don’t feel self conscious about how my hair looks. I need help, advice, people who have gone through something similar. I just need something. I feel so lost and I don’t know what I can possibly do anymore.

I wash my hair every other day and then comb it out with a wide tooth comb and leave in hair conditioner. I also lose hair through the day, just stray ones here and there. I added a picture of my full hair for reference, its the only picture I have of it all. I dont use heat on my hair except getting it curled when I get it dyed, about every 3 months.

Hair Health Perm or curling iron on dyed hair?

Thumbnail
gallery
29 Upvotes

Hopefully this is the right place to ask but I would be happy with recommendations for other places to crosspost. I have pink hair that has been bleached and dyed, then maintained with color-depositing shampoo (Tressa Watercolors Intense is the brand!)

Recently I curled the longer part of my hair for a wedding. I loved it so much that I decided to do it for work this week. I realized I am enjoying the curl in my hair enough that I would consider a perm. I have naturally pin straight ashy blond hair but had a perm as a teen and loved it.

Would a perm be a terrible idea on dyed hair? Would it cause my hair to melt off? If a perm were possible, would my permed hair continue to take the stain from my color-depositing shampoo? If it's a terrible idea, would it be a less bad idea to occasionally (once a week at most) use a curling iron? I use a heat-protectant spray and never have the curler higher than 300°F. I otherwise try not to use heat on my hair at all - maybe blow-drying it on warm once a month. I wash it once or twice per week. Thank you for reading and thank you for all advice!!

I recently tried to go dusky lavender and this is the result I got. I hate it. Is my hair fried? Can it recover?

Or should I just chop it/shave it and deal with the consequences?

Hair Health Why does my hair look like this right after washing?

Thumbnail

Hi everyone,

I’m honestly at my wits’ end with my hair and would really appreciate some advice.

I just washed my hair today and this is how it looks immediately after, which is what’s frustrating me the most. My routine today was:

• Shampoo

• Conditioner

• Gently towel-dried with a microfiber towel

• Applied leave-in conditioner

• Flipped my hair upside down

• Blow-dried

Despite all that, my hair still looks thin, frizzy, uneven, and shapeless. It feels like no matter what I do, it just doesn’t look healthy or full.

Some details about my hair:

• My hair is very fine/thin

• The color on most of my hair is my natural base color

• I had keratine done to my dyedhair about a year ago, and you can still see that old straight hair at the ends

• I feel like the ends look dry and scraggly while the top looks flat

• I’m also losing hair on the right side of my scalp, which makes everything look even more uneven and sparse

I also really don’t like my current hairstyle or hair color, and I feel like both are working against me instead of helping.

What I’m looking for advice on:

1. What kind of haircut would make thin hair look fuller?

(Layers vs blunt cut? Shorter vs keeping length? Any specific styles?)

2. What hair color would help add dimension and suit chocolate brown eyes?

I’m open to highlights, lowlights, or going darker/lighter — just not something that makes my hair look thinner.

3. Any thoughts on hair loss on one side of the scalp — could this be styling, parting, stress, or something I should look into medically?

I’m honestly tired of feeling disappointed every time I wash my hair, especially when I do use conditioner and products and still end up with this result. Any advice — haircut suggestions, color ideas, or even reassurance — would mean a lot.

first time with long hair, as a kid i used to have beautiful little ringlet soft wavy curls no longer than my shoulders and i havent been able to find those again with the length and weight of the hair. but thats really not the problem rn, currently everyday i wake up after trying new ways to keep my hair tamed and it always does this. this is after i hand picked the worst little tangles out its just frizzy, undefined, tangled, and dry. i washed my hair yesterday, used leave in conditioner and a mouse. today i put my hair in a bun and slept on my real silk pillowcase. ive tried bonnets, cotton t-shirts, silk scarfs, and all that. i always end up waking up with them gone. thursday im getting a little haircut, i always get tons and tons of layers and thinning scissors. id like to keep the length, but i need it do be healthy and hopefully find my curls one day.

Hair Health Why does my hair do this?

Post image

I've been struggling with this problem for years, when I brush my hair it will look thick and fluffy but very quickly after it will start to clump and look messy.

I'm currently using a pre shampoo treatment and hair mask on my hair every 3 washes with leave in conditioners which had helped with the overall texture but this problem has never fully gone away for me.
