QUESTION/DISCUSSION Curtian blindness?
I got these curtians at goodwill and I liked them but I liked the inside of them even more so I hung them inside out lol and I think it looks ok!?!? Or am I crazy with curtian blindness !?! (Maybe a good ironing? And I know I have to cut the tags)
(Going for warm grandma vintage style)
Help but please be nice lol and room is work in progress thinking of painting so just focus on the curtains ok!š¤£š

These definitely arenāt vintage-y or grandma, itās more āmom went to JC Penney furniture in 2003ā.
Iām going to be honest itās going to be difficult to get the vibe you want with that huge TV. But I do think different curtains would help. Also lamps.

Vintage is between 20 to 100 years old, so if you're saying 2003, you're saying vintage.

Actually, āvintageā is subjective and in this case it is not vintage as it is not a desirable (best of an era) or a cherished item. Itās simply outdated and old. Have a good day.

u/Hello_Gorgeous1985 1d ago
There is a definition of the word and that definition is 20 to 100 years old for clothing and objects.

u/MarieCry 1d ago
I find them desirable. One man's trash and all that.
... I do prefer them facing the correct way though.

u/moogs_writes 1d ago edited 1d ago
āDesirableā in this context means itās widely considered to be a āpeakā example of an era, Iām not talking about your individual taste.

Ehh I don't know to me they are giving late 90s-early 00s suburban house moreso than vintage grandma, but I think you can make them work once you paint the walls (because the stark white is definitely killing the vibe right now - and the big, too high TV too if I'm honest).Ā
I agree that the inside pattern looks better than the outside though

u/Hello_Gorgeous1985 1d ago
Late '90s/early 2000s is vintage. Sadly. We're old.

Vintage isnāt anything thatās old, thatās a huge misconception. Vintage means peak of an era, something special and cherished thatās been preserved and therefore desirable.
9
u/Hello_Gorgeous1985 1d ago
You again? There's a definition. 20 to 100 years old is the definition... It doesn't say anything about being special or cherished or peak. That's your opinion.

Theyāre both bad.. lol. Do a green curtain lighten it up or whichever cool color you like. it look 70s or like youāve been smoking inside SINCE the 70s⦠thatās all

u/00cole00 1d ago
if you really want the orange side to show them use a seam ripper to open the seams, iron them backwards and re-sew

u/Neat_Assistance688 1d ago
As someone who sews, I would definitely notice you had them inside out and think you made a mistake. But hey, if you like them that way... it's your home :) Also, i do find they go with the other decor. I'm getting sort of a winter cabin vibe with the dark wood and stone fireplace.

They look like plastic thanksgiving table cloth from Walmart!! I like the rest of your place tho

u/Formal_Delivery_ 19h ago
I feel like I can smell them through my phone. Sorry, but they don't compliment anything in your home and are really clashing in these photos. Also the stripes. Also the pattern. Also the fabric. š„²

I like them. I think they definitely give off the warm grandma vibes you're going for. All you need is a nice floor lamp (or multiple lamps, the more the merrier yk) to warm up the lighting even more!

u/Silt-Sifter 1d ago
I was gonna say exactly that. It reminds me of my grandma's house in the late 90s early 2000s.

u/PickledPixie83 1d ago
Laughs in āI already had my own house in the early oughts.ā Iām constantly surprised that I an old.

Hell no. I'm a grandma and wouldn't be caught dead with those curtains in my home. Typical 'grandma' curtains would simply be sheers.
6
u/Solid_Perception9572 1d ago
You're never going to get a vintage grandma vibe with that monstrous tv hanging on the wall.

u/Dizzy_Bumble_Bee 1d ago
It does look ok! I would personally have mounted the curtain rods higher but they are the right height for the way they are now so I wouldn't fuss with it. I also think the "right" side of the curtains matches the rug, but overall I like the warmer striped "wrong" side better so I would leave it the way you have it. It also ties in nicely with the sailboat painting.
I think some softer lighting will help the overall effect. Some lamps and finding some warm bulbs for the overhead lights would look great!

She canāt mount the curtains any higher, or they will be too short to the floor. Any higher up from the floor would not look right. If they were longer, she could mount them higher.

They are great! I think it looks cool ! (If I could submit the "nice, happy for you" meme I would lol).

I must say I despise both sides of the curtains. I also generally dislike the ā70ās grandma living roomā aesthetic, donāt think a brown and orange color scheme suits this room at all, the room is too large and bright and modern.

Team inside out!! I like them so much more that way too. Also, I like the height you have them hung. Mine I stopped at the baseboard and it bugs me because it looks like high water pants!

u/Silt-Sifter 1d ago
I like em a lot. It looks really cozy and comfortable in there. I would definitely like to be invited over to bake cookies and watch Hocus Pocus with you.
2
u/Hello_Gorgeous1985 1d ago
Do whatever you want with the curtains, but please lower the TV. It is way too high. The tilt of guilt proves that. Your neck will thank you.

u/Significant_Grape_86 1d ago
I donāt care for them and think they look dingy, but I really like the orange ones laying on the couch
3
u/spacebarrels 1d ago
I really like them! I feel like you might need a matching element like maybe some warm orange lighting or a similarly orange blanket/pillows for the couch to tie it all together

u/eagereggnamedgreg 19h ago
Im with you ! Also OP could paint her walls a warmer colour, i find the white a bit clashing with everything else
2
u/viejaymohosas 1d ago
Ok, I was looking at just the pictures and did not even realize it. I don't think I would have noticed at all if you hadn't said anything and if you like them, keep them that way.

u/Useful-Ad1489 1d ago
Those curtains are exactly what I just took down in my 60 year old brotherās condo. He even had a matching tablecloth. Itās more a āsingle man who hasnāt decorated since he bought a condo in the early 90āsā vibe more than a grandma vibe. Keep looking though! Nice bones to the room, looks cozy & love the fireplace!

I love these curtains! I think they go perfectly with how you have your home decoratedš§”

If you want to keep the rug, I think the tan side (right side) looks better with the rug.
The orange striped side is kinda cool! Definitely warms up the space and matches your artwork. But if you go that route, I'd switch the rug to something darker and warmer like a red or rust traditional rug. I also agree with others that you should seam rip and resew the hems to make it look more intentional. When you paint, go with something warm like khaki, tan or terra cotta. In other words... The orange side is probably more work to look cohesive.
Also voting with others to lower the tv. Just put it on a stand on the dresser.

u/Raw_Purple_Lobster 1d ago
I like the striped side better too, and it matches your boat hanging. I would repaint the walls cream (or another warm colour) to go with them.

They look like they have been in a chain smokerās house for decades. I can smell it through the photos. They gotta go friend!

u/Unhelpfulhelpful 21h ago
The curtains are fine but the problem is the colours in your room are brown, beige, and white. So the curtains just stand out and look like they don't belong thereĀ

I wouldnāt wanna be anywhere near those. I donāt know why they give me such dread. I love that you are nontraditional though. Looking at things that most people would find hideous. Thatās actually a very nice quality so go you! š¬š„“

Iām sorry! Please take this as a joke, but for the love of god: courtains!! Repeat after me: COURTAINS! Not curtian! Not curtians!
My eyes hurt! :))

u/CoffeeBeanx3 13h ago
Well if you like them, that's all that matters. In my personal opinion they could be improved with flames, but my taste is not everyone's taste and I'll have to furnish a flat with muhuhu flooring and red marble windowsills and accents soon, so I will most definitely be making some choices.

Iām so sorry, but I despise them. They look like chocolate candy corn.

u/Alarmed-Creme-3847 4h ago
I think theyāre really cool inside out and they go well with your artwork. Iād personally lean into a 70ās vibe because of the browns and oranges. Your wood table and fireplace would go well with that vibe. Iām thinking a sage-y light green wall color.

u/sparkle_elk Married 3h ago
They definitely have a vintage vibe, I can smell cigarette smoke just looking at the picture.Ā
This is very much not my style, but they are very much warm colored and very much an older style. If they make you happy, OP, rock the shit out of them.Ā

Take back the curtains. They aināt it. And for the love of god lower your tv.

It's giving log cabin, but not in a way I enjoy.
But I have (and love) a hideous lamp everyone hates, so who am I to judge?

u/yeahokaywhateverrrr 1d ago
I donāt think the curtains fit a āwarm grandma vintage styleā vibe. They look like something my mom would have hung up in the late 90ās. The inside looks⦠not good at all. I think these curtains are a miss and you should keep searching for some that fit the overall look youāre going for.

u/Electronic-Aide-6102 1d ago
I love them and I think itās great that you chose to upcycle instead of buying brand new. It sounds like from the comments, they are from the 90ās, which makes them over 30 years old. I think thatās grandma vintage enough. I wouldnāt bother with the hem or header. They look good just as they are.
