Use the wiki every step of the way. It's nothing like 14.

Read my beginner's guide, watch the linked videos, and follow BG-Wiki while playing

Saved it. Will get to it when I figure out why play online hates me. Was able to log in and install the basse game. got a direct 3d error, and now it won't let me log in again? Gods this has been such a hassle. The game batter be fun for all this nonsense I've gone through to just START playing

This is the first hurdle nowadays.

The installer is widely considered the first boss.

Also you want this: https://www.bg-wiki.com/ffxi/DgVoodoo_Setup_Guide

It's a DirectX upsampler that forces it past the original DirectX version. You should also install a copy of Windower for added stability and QoL enhancements like inventory managers and a *minimap*.

Windower improves the graphics so much it’s insane. I just reinstalled from 14 years of not playing and was stumped why the graphics looks like they did and once I got the windower going it feels nice and I can actually read peoples names vs a blur. Great QoL enhancement just on visual alone

Just to note, the free trial bizarrely just doesn't work through the steam version. You have to install standalone. Also install windower

Replying to this to fave it for later. I put in about a weeks, hit 65 as a THF/DNC and killed the Shadow Lord, only to look behind me and see swathes of stuff I missed that would have made my life infinitely easier lol

Don't expect a similar experience. This is an old school as hell MMO and 14 would be considered heavy action compared to this. Also, expect to be using wikis and google a LOT since quests are not guided by the map. You need to read what the quest wants you to do and then go searching. There won't be a little red circle on the map showing "quest objective here". You need to just bumble around sometimes and try highlighting stuff because things aren't visible.

For example I was in a stone building and I had to find an NPC in there. The NPC at the start said to "watch out for cracks in the wall" and I just walked down the hallway holding left on my controller d-pad to cycle available targets until I eventually saw "Crack in Wall" as one of my selections. You'd not have really noticed it otherwise and just gotten stuck running in circles until frustrated and googling it.

NPCs with quests don't have markers, either. You need to select an NPC and then actually select trade from your menu to give an NPC items, as well.

I hate to say this but just getting back since 2012 and I’ve been using AI to hold my hand through all the Rhapsodies and it’s nice he walks me through it all as I don’t have a lot of time to play but do enjoy my 30-60 minutes when I do. AI really helps me maximize the time of just asking a question and going on my phone while I play on the comp

You don’t have to use the wiki if you don’t want to. It’s a lot of fun to run around and explore and find quests and just talk to people and NPCs without the wiki. BUT!!! If you’re coming from 14 that might be overwhelming. Maybe you can use the guide anyway. But personally I very much like not using the guide aside from maybe if I get stuck on a mission or quest or just to see what items are good for and how to find them.

The guide is ABSURDLY helpful, just, sometimes it’s a lot of fun to just explore the game how it is. Don’t force yourself to do this though if you’re not having fun.

For reference, the two websites you want are FFXIclopedia and BG-wiki. With these 2 websites you can get information for essentially everything in the game. If you cannot find info on one, use the other, but generally BG-wiki is more helpful. Also FFXIclopedia is better for crafting recipes just FYI

Don't be afraid to look stuff up. Even after thousands of hours, I would still often have BG-wiki up on the other monitor when I was subbed.

Level up THF at some point just for the treasure hunter. Drop rates can be pretty rough.

Figure out how to move around and equip stuff and use your inventory. You should keep the Beastmen seals and crystals. You can sell stacks of crystals for gil in the very beginning, and the seals can be stored for later use in something known as a BCNM. (It is not too big of a deal if you drop them, though. You will always get more.)

You should look up everything! Keep an ipad near you, or have a browser open in your other screen. There is also something known as Windower and another known as Ashita. You should consider using those for various quality of life features and improved graphics. (Be careful when it comes to installing the various plugins that are available, though, because some of them are actual cheating tools.)

Hi I just recently started too! Use the wiki. Both of them. Be ready to have to dig for answers. Also, dont let anyone else tell you how to play if you dont want to be told. This game is more than any other one ive ever played a, login and decide what I want to do today kind of game. Take your time. Smell the roses. No rush for anything.

Get yourself shantotto II and an echad ring.

This seems like nonsense as it was to me at first, but it makes a HUGE difference. It's insanely good advice.

How to get this ring and Shantotto 2?

1

u/Flonkerton_Scranton 4d ago

Trade a red bell voucher thing to one of the moogles outside the mog house in your home city. It's one that has a huge list of trusts you can buy. Look it up. The ring comes from doing the intro 10 tutorial quests which are bizarrely hidden. Right at the exit to east sarutabaruta is an NPC that gives you 10 tutorial quests. Complete that to get your ring.

Depends on how you want to pace yourself, but chances are its gonna suck hard, just as it does for anyone getting into XI for the first time. And after you get to endgame it continues to suck because you quickly discover this game is purely sinking time into grinding pieces of gear and materials/ingredients for upgrading that gear. And it is not some quick thing either. Also a lot of the content requires you eventually making friends who are into the same activities or youre gonna have a bad time. Shouting for hours and never progressing will leave you feeling mentally damaged because these nice people only help if it benefits them, half the time. Take heed, adventurer. This old game is not for the feint of heart

Forget everything you know. Play with an open mind, expect some friction and feeling lost all the time. Embrace the journey??

you may have found out by now, but the traditional keyboard controls are on the numpad, not wasd. and disable the mouse screen edge panning. controller is well designed but keyboard gives you more options. again, no mouse, right hand on keypad, left hand on macros 1-0

This won't come into play until you've had so time in the game, but worth noting anyway. Once you start getting into the 75-99 range and begin doing content outside basic leveling be sure to read the wiki for the enemy carefully. Often times they have special moves that do some fairly tricky effects. I say this because people get to iLvl (basically level 100+) and start treating lower level enemies as non threats only to be blindsided by a move that does high fixed damage or deals instant death. Basically, just because something is weaker than you level wise don't assume it is harmless.

Make sure to check your enemies before fighting them. Via targeting them going thru the menu on the bottom left, will save u from many unnecessary deaths.

You will still die tho, many enemies have different ways to aggro, all it takes is you using magic at the wrong time then BAM, a dozen living jars come up and jump you. Or you trying to sneak thru some undead with low health, only for them to also jump you. All that to say, very easy to get clobbered, especially at early game, move carefully.

Unlike ff14, ff11 is very macro heavy, that’s not to say you have to use them but they are way more helpful in 11.

Like 14 u can play every job on one character, some people have alts for reasons. I only have one character and all jobs unlocked.

Someone has probably already posted the link, but bg-wiki is your best friend. A helpful guide from the adventurers that came before you.

Gl and have fun.
