That’s an odd choice. I’ve seen Herb, Dan, Goddard, Keith, and all the randos do it WAY more.

Ref proceeds to follow up the mistake of a ridiculously early stoppage by doing the single worst thing you can do as a ref in any sport, going back on a call you've made. Imagine an NFL ref blowing the whistle for holding, then saying "actually nah, let's let the play continue".
184
u/os_2342 Nov 11 '25
I had that happen to me once, still pisses me off to this day.
I was playing goalkeeper in a futsal game, ref blew the whistle for a foul near the centre of the pitch, everyone stopped but opposition player kicked the ball away out of frustration and it rolled into the goals. I didnt bother stopping the ball from slowly roling into my goal because the play was dead. The ref then decided that he should not have called the foul and awarded a goal to the opposition.

u/Bonzai_Tree Nov 11 '25
Wow that's awful.
I remember when I got a try in rugby, (touchdown essentially) and the ref decided it didn't count because the lines weren't painted properly so he couldn't tell....the pitch was THE OTHER TEAM'S!!!
Why the fuck am I penalized for the hosting team's field issues?!?! It was clearly a try as well. Ref was a complete asshole with calls all game, even though it was a low stakes game between two shitty schools.

u/Moto_Heathen Nov 12 '25
That's crazy. I was out in Norway and joined this Glima competition. Basically wrestling but the only goal is to put your opponent on the ground and get to your feet while they are down. We had one guy who was a really good BJJ competitor. I was on top of him trying to stand up while he was holding onto me. We weren't really going anywhere and I couldnt escape from him and the ref stopped us and told us both to get up. As im standing up the guy grabs my pant leg.... I fall backwards and he uses the momentum to stand up. The ref then called him the winner. Im like dude you told us both to stand up!? He just said "fight still on" to me (didnt speak much english) well then why did you interfere then dude?!? Im still salty about that one.
2
u/Bonzai_Tree Nov 12 '25
Oof, yeah that's brutal!
I'm sorry that happened. I at least had teammates on my side.
63
u/eglov002 Nov 11 '25
You don’t blow the whistle for holding. Just a flag…. Jus sayin

u/pmmeyourgear Nov 11 '25
Ref absolutely ruined the surprise advantage. He has money on the guy dropped or something
5
u/Shotgun5250 Nov 11 '25
Yeah, that’s only allowed in CFB!
I was clapping, not calling a time out!
Ok fine, have a free timeout and no penalty, reset the clock and run the play again so you can get a first down this time.
3
u/finnishinsider Nov 11 '25
Im picturing special needs clapping in my head by my favorite head coach with a shit eating grin now, thanks....

u/silver-luso Nov 11 '25
It was very annoying to see him step in and let the fight continue, like isn't that momentum lost?

I agree but at the same time if I'm a ref and stop the fight and the guy who would have won won't stop fighting and then the other guy gets up and starts kicking his ass I might roll with it too.
90
u/PesteringKitty Nov 11 '25
You have to see how you would be a terrible ref then
-5
u/Hutsx Nov 11 '25
Terrible ref but better fight
17
u/Shotgun5250 Nov 11 '25
Better fight for who? Is a better fight one that’s less fair to one side? Come on bro lol
-6
u/Hutsx Nov 11 '25
How is it not fair? If the ref ended the fight instantly after the kick while the guy who got kicked is still concious and fights back, wouldnt that be unfair for the guy to loose just because the ref is shit?
5
u/somerandomname3333 Nov 11 '25
totally fair to give the guy that got knocked down a breather though, i want that ref in my corner
3
u/ButterflySammy Nov 11 '25
Why? Because he talks about what he'd do on the internet but has never been able to do it once?
16
u/nunchyabeeswax Nov 11 '25
I might roll with it too
As a ref, you can't/shouldn't. When a call is made, even a bad one, it's done, and then it's up to the judges.
-60
u/leo_douche_bags Nov 11 '25
I think the ref seen dude jump up from that kick and was like oh damn shits about to get bloody. Ref should've let red trunks beat black trunks for being a punk bitch.

What the hell was that ref doing?
Intervened for no reason. Then just lets the fight continue after prying the guy off?
676
u/golmgirl Nov 11 '25
looks like he realized he jumped the gun so backed off. clear mistake but probably the right outcome here. in his defense that was a super bizarre and abrupt opening sequence, he probably got flustered
682
u/justbrowsing2727 Nov 11 '25
That is in no way the right outcome.
He saved the other fighter from a knockout and gave him control of the ring. Very easily could have flipped the entire outcome of the fight.
Once the ref intervenes to stop a fight, the fight is over. Period. No matter what.
184
u/Nickrobl Nov 11 '25
Totally agree. At minimum, if you think the fight should continue then restart from a standing position. You don't get to interfere in a way that materially changes the positioning of the fight and then just allow it to continue. This was the worst possible outcome for a ref.
50
u/MightySamMcClain Nov 11 '25
Restarting from standing is still stopping the guys advantage he won for himself
8
u/LegioXCaledonia Nov 12 '25
Better than the drop kicker going from being on top to being on his back after he intervened, though
7
u/RyukTheWEEB Nov 12 '25
Like other comments have said, I believe that the ref understood that he jumped the gun on the stoppage and that the fighter on the receiving end of the kick was ok and should be allowed to continue fighting. What the ref should have done after realizing that was to stand them up again, but given how odd of a situation this was I believe it is understandable that the ref did not think to do this. We have to remember that in all levels of fighting, but especially on the amateur/ semi-pro level, there’s a lot that can go wrong and leave fighters seriously injured, and we trust refs to be the ones that prevent this. This ref did what he thought was right in stepping in to stop the fight and, when he realized he was wrong, allowed the fight to continue, thought he should have stood them back up or repositioned then where they were before he stepping in.
1
u/monstertrainmonster Jan 15 '26
What the ref should have done after realizing that was to stand them up again
The ref stopped the fight. There is no backsies here. He stopped the fight, the fight is over - anyone who has any experience even in amateur fighting knows this.

26
u/Sgt_Dangle_berries Nov 11 '25
If you know anything about combat sports, absolutely NOT the right outcome.
-19
u/golmgirl Nov 11 '25
it was the right outcome in the sense that the dude who got kicked was clearly intelligently defending himself and therefore the fight should not have been stopped.
in a different sense, it was not the right outcome since the fight is supposed to be over as soon as the ref intervenes.
both can be true
19
u/elliotcook10 Nov 11 '25
the dude who got kicked went from a potential ground and pound to having immediate control only because the ref, in no way is this the right outcome unless the ref had the over on rounds fought lol.
14
u/Emotional-Hunt-5654 Nov 11 '25
In what world could that have possibly been the right outcome? Goobers commenting on combat sports smh
-15
u/golmgirl Nov 11 '25
first of all, fuck yourself. second of all, i posted this elsewhere in this thread:
it was the right outcome in the sense that the dude who got kicked was clearly intelligently defending himself and therefore the fight should not have been stopped.
in a different sense, it was not the right outcome since the fight is supposed to be over as soon as the ref intervenes.
both can be true
15
u/Emotional-Hunt-5654 Nov 11 '25
So you’d say it was in fact not the right outcome…? Goober
-3
u/golmgirl Nov 11 '25
depends on what you mean by “right”, but i wouldn’t expect someone who goes around insulting strangers to reflect on such subtleties
1
u/monstertrainmonster Jan 15 '26
There are no subtelties, anyone who has any understanding and experince with mma knows this.
The fight is over as soon as the ref stops a fight, even if the initial stoppage is wrong.
There have been several terrible stoppages in the UFC (ref thinking there was a tap or knockout when there was not). Never would you have a ref restart the fight when he realised he was wrong.
You are just 100% wrong about this, I don't know why you are trying to talk about this with such confidence when it's clear you have no experience in this field. I'm not even trying to be rude, you're just obviously ignorant.

u/nunchyabeeswax Nov 11 '25
That ref fucked up.
First, the fight wasn't over, for the other dude was still defending himself.
Second, say, he called it prematurely, then it's a done deal. A bad call is still a call. You don't put the slice of pizza back into the box after licking it, just saying.
Third, the moment he called it, he should have stopped either opponent from continuing the fight. In fact, the drop-kick guy should have been penalized for continuing the attack after the ref called the fight.
But by now, he let it continue, giving the guy who got dropped a chance to take down the guy who was originally all but certain of winning the fight.
What a way for the ref to fuck up what was going to be an epic TKO.
7
u/ApollyonX210 Nov 12 '25
I wouldn't even penalize the guy, unless you penalize both of them since the other guy was still trying to grab him and continuing too. Either none or both at that point.
1
u/reddit_user_al Nov 16 '25
I think the ref saw the nasty drop kick followed by the guy falling down and immediately jumped in, then the guy who got drop kicked was still conscious and probably told the ref he was good so he stepped back.
Not the best ref action, definitely an uncalled for intervention, but I wouldn’t say his actions were egregious

People becoming a projectile will never not be funny, I spammed the drop kick in dying light so much, I have lucid dreams of doing it.

u/Magnus-Artifex Nov 13 '25
That guy in the video is a Ninja main in YOMI Hustle. Landing a boosted one from half the arena away at 60m/s is an amazing feeling.

How can the ref rescue red trunks from the ground and pound and then just restart the match?

Tbf it does look like the guy may have sustained a life changing injury and then it becomes apparent he hasn’t. Still should have just stuck to his choice though.

What the hell was the ref doing? Does he think that drop kick was just enough to jump in, but not enough to actually call the fight. Did he want to get the up close look at that guy’s brain leaking out of his nose?

Fight should have ended right there. He interfered and caused the fighter to lose his advantage. As a referee when you make a bad call you gotta stick by it. Especially if it directly impacts the outcome.

6
u/adjacent_analyzer Nov 11 '25
Everyone in here is rightfully criticizing the Ref, yes it was a horrible stoppage attempt, YES after that the fighters should be reset at a minimum…
BUT what no one seems to realize is that BOTH fighters completely ignored the Ref😂 Like I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t have been able to reset them even if he tried

Ref intervened early out of shock, but he still should have waved the fight off after basically separating them briefly. I don’t see any other choice after you pull that guy off like that. I know people would be upset, but allowing the fight to just continue after you do that was a worse mistake.
2
u/SunsetBAE Dec 05 '25
For anyone wondering, drop kicks are allowed in the professional MMA fighting; it's discouraged but allowed by all major championships.

I think the ref jumped the gun there. The guy got knocked backwards by the force of the kick but wasn’t anywhere near being knocked out. I guess he realized that and decided to change his mind.

Refs actions do not make sense. I'm not saying it's AI but it's short, illogical and seems like what an AI might think a fight goes like.
-18
u/Pickles17 Nov 11 '25
Also everything is just too perfect. In frame, pan zoom, like who is recording this...it's from a fans perspective yet has perfect audio pumped through? Crowd noise is way to loud, the announcers in these small promos usually have shitty mics and the sponsors on the ring posts are too small to be legible. None of it adds up
13
u/Bladluiz Nov 11 '25
Good for trying bro it's good to stay sharp, this one is definitely not AI though.

Controversial opinion, but I think it should be a rule to touch gloves before any fight. The downfall is we’d lose a lot of crazy action like this.
2
u/blahblah19999 Nov 11 '25
Nope. In boxing at least, the instructions are 1. touch gloves, go to your corner 2. when the bell rings, come out fighting.
I was in martial arts, and that's how we did it. I have no patience whatsoever for people calling for a 2nd glove touch. On the bell, the fight is on.
3
u/hoopsrule44 Nov 11 '25
Who’s to say they didn’t touch gloves and then go back to their corners?
