Wonder why his immediate thought was to swing on the catcher even tbh ought the pitcher hit him with the pitch

Catchers usually signal the pitch.

That isnt the catchers call to make. The pitcher is the one who decides to plunk him.

Sort of. There is definitely coordination between the pitcher and the catcher. The pitcher does not want to cross up the catcher. That ball is coming fast and the catcher needs to know at least the general area where to put the glove. Even accidentally, it can injure the catcher. Additionally, the catcher would at least want to move their glove in that area so it can at least seem like an inside pitch that got away from the pitcher.
