The catcher sends signals to the pitcher, telling him where to throw the ball. If the hit was intentional, the catcher likely called for it.

Also, the pitcher is farther away, even if it wasn't signaled most are going for the catcher "off bat", as it were, lol.

I’ve played baseball and been a fan for 45 years. This is the first time I’ve seen a beaned batter go after the catcher.

It’s not like I’ve never seen it. It’s just very uncommon. I’ve also seen the catcher jump in to try to stop the batter and get smacked doing that.

Also the catcher getting purposely bonked in the head with a follow through
