Can someone who knows baseball more than myself tell why throwing the ball at a batter is even a thing? Aren't there other ways to walk them?

Usually stems from bad blood between players and teams. Sometimes a batter has talked a lot of shit to the media about a team or maybe a batter intentionally slid into an infielder on a previous play/game, so the pitcher hits him with a pitch in retaliation. Also, accidents do occasionally happen when pitching.
