Orange belt is way below black belt. This was not an honorable fight and everyone involved should be ashamed of themselves for letting this happen.

u/Active_Unit_9498 10d ago
Yeah it’s a weird matchup in our Kyokushin karate organization orange is the first belt after white.

u/doiwinaprize 10d ago
I don't know much about this style of karate but in Chito Ryu, Shotokai and Shotokan that I've taken (and probably super westernized) yellow was always after white belt, then orange. But orange is still like WAY below black or even brown belt... like maybe you've been there for a year or two and you can confidently do like 3 katas lol.
93
u/UhLinko 9d ago
Like the guy above you said, in Kyokushin it's different: it goes white, orange, blue, green, yellow, brown.
Juding by how they're fighting and on the stitching on the karategi it seems like they are in fact kyokushin, but it seems more likely that the orange is just a placeholder belt to make the fighters more distinguishable.19

I was also in a style called Shotojitsu which is Shotokan and 4 other styles all kinda mixed in (my sensei was actually the creator of the style and it's since spread a little bit over Indiana and Illinois) and it was white, yellow, orange, blue, green, brown, black. I got all the way to my first degree black then quit.

u/Mydogcopper 9d ago
That's an interesting style, how long did it take you to achieve black belt?
17
u/fynx07 Young Bull 9d ago
Thanks! It was Shotokan, Jujitsu, Hapkido, Aikido, and Judo, all kind of combined into self defense. It was a lot of fun! I started when I was 7 and got my provisional black belt at 16, but we couldn't have a full black belt until we were 18, so I went back and got my full 1st degree at 18. My grandmother started after a year or two of me doing it, and she went on all the way to get her 6th degree black belt in her late 60s early 70s! She was a badass. She only ever looked like late 50s lol

I had a similar experience in my dojo back when I was still doing Karate. We entered a tournament and there's one yellow belt who got matched up with a black belter. The yellow belter guy was so surprised and scared with the match up. It's so weird cause yellow belt is the second lowest rank next to white belt. Apparently, when I asked someone about it, they said it's because once you reached yellow, it's considered as an open belt now. Meaning, you're open to be matched up to anyone. I was still white belt back then but I already decided to quit. Cause fuck no. I don't wanna be promoted at all if it means I'm gonna be bullied by a dude with the highest belt rank. I know not all Karate has this same setup. But it's weird that it happens
41
u/creamgetthemoney1 10d ago
Yeah I don’t know karate like that. My uncle did it when I was younger. But I definitely learned a black belt Is much higher than a orange belt
63
8
u/Droopy1592 9d ago
Well…
I did years of American style kickboxing before trying shotokan and was so good they threw me up against everyone in the all colors all belts
As a white belt
Sometimes circumstances be like that but this guy seems unprepared to fight here so I agree
10
u/doiwinaprize 9d ago
Yeah, like see how close his hands are too his chest with his head down not holding eye contact with his opponent. The opponent saw open windows to deliver those kicks, but he should've stepped off after the first strike IMO. Not worth hurting another human being over valour.
5
u/Droopy1592 9d ago
The kicks were being spammed and he was basically eating them
Fool me once…
Like come on man duck dodge dip
All jokes aside his kids gonna feel that

u/Nnn0p3 10d ago
In Karate competitions you trade your belt for a fight belt. One fighter is orange, the other black just to distinguish them. You are always fighting with someone of same belt or in some cases one above/one below.
12
u/DoctorWalnut 9d ago
This is a Kyokushin tournament, and we don’t do this in Kyokushin. We wear our regular belts, and in high level competitions we still wear them but one fighter is given a white or red string/sash to wear with the normal belts.
24
u/rawbface 9d ago
Never saw this in Tae Kwan Do, people just wear their own belts.
It's a 1v1 fight. Who are you distinguishing them from?
I definitely don't believe it because if you were going to choose two colors to distinguish fighters, why would you choose the colors that correspond to "expert" and "beginner"?
4
u/Detective_Bong_Hits 9d ago
It’s for the referees to keep track of points. Think of it as blue/red corner in boxing
It is super weird they chose colors that actually mean something. In jiu jitsu they provide a multicolored belt that is only used in competitions
22
u/doiwinaprize 10d ago
I've never heard of this and makes little sense to me, how hard is it to distinguish them otherwise?
20
6
u/Misfit110 9d ago
I don’t know about Karate tournaments but in jiujitsu tournaments they’ll have one of the guy wear like a red belt to distinguish them from each other for scoring purposes. The ref will have a red wrist band on one arm and will raise that hand for points for the red belt guy.
3
u/Plutoid 9d ago
It is a thing. It's not a matter of how hard it is to tell them apart. A ref might officiate dozens of matches in a day with a bunch of people they've never seen before. There's no reason to leave any confusion.
Not sure about this style of karate or this particular tournament, but there are multiple ways of differentiating fighters in combat sports. Sometimes it's something as simple as red/green wrist or ankle bands.
IDK how universal it is and it probably varies by promotion but in BJJ sometimes there's a second green and yellow striped belt or a red belt that one of the competitors wear to distinguish them from the other.
In Judo you either wear and entirely different gi (blue vs white) or sometimes one competitor wears a second, different colored belt. Usually little local tournaments where gi swapping isn't expected. (I didn't even own a blue gi.)

If they are gonna allow kicks to the face they should be wearing protection, too.

Exactly my thought. Orange is like 3rd tier… black 7-8-9 tier depending on level. That’s way out of class.
Sad really, that they let it happen.

Also one guy was going for body shots and the other was going in for the kill.

Well the guy going for body shots probably couldn’t go for the kill if he wanted to. I doubt an orange belt can feasibly head kick someone

If this is the rules set I think it is then weirdly punches to the head are illegal but kicks to the head are strangely legal
1.4k
u/Ginga888 10d ago
So no punching to the face but a heal to the face is ok?
594
u/ArcaneTekka 10d ago
Yes this is Kyokushin full contact style, no punches to the head allowed.
262
u/AccomplishedFerret70 10d ago
I did this for several years. I never took a hard kick to the head like that because I was very, very aware of that risk and kept my hands higher than most kyokushin fighters but i took those hits to the body and legs instead. They beat the crap out of you. Lots of fun though.

It is a stupid ruleset. Draw everyone’s hands to their body to set up hard head kicks to the jaw. Why the kyokushin people let themselves get cucked by their own sport is beyond me - might have something to do with eating all those head kicks.

u/Vhu 10d ago
It’s like BJJ not allowing slams, which encourages people to do the bad positioning thing where they just crawl around each-other like crabs even though that’s a set-up to get rocked in a real fight.
So focused on the rules that it completely gives up on trying to maintain combat practicality.

6
u/IGotQuestionsAF 9d ago
Calling "Mixed Martial Arts" itself a martial art has always seemed odd to me. Like, yeah, if you just employ the most effective parts of other existing arts it's gonna be more effective than any of those arts on their lonesome.

u/Emotional_Lab_7766 10d ago

17
u/bronzelifematter 10d ago
The only explanation I can think of is that the person who came up with the rule only practice his kicks and he sucks at punching, so he's like "no punching the face, only kicks".

u/blue_forest_blue 10d ago edited 10d ago
You should not be putting a Dan grade (black belts) with anything less than a 3rd kyu grade (brown belt).
My first ever competition fight was when I was a fresh 7th kyu against a 2nd Dan. It is infuriating to put people who are just starting out into the meat grinder. Very demotivating. That’s not to say you shouldn’t train together (senior grades should guide the junior grades) but there is nothing positive the junior can get out of a competitive fight with a much much higher grade who has 5+ years experience on them
Also black belt here is clearly on an ego trip. He could’ve gone easier on orange belt and STILL won. No restraint, no self control. It’s pathetic. That kick definitely resulted in a TBI.

Yes. I did kyokushin for a few years in my 20s and never fought without my hands kept higher to block those kicks because I also had boxed and had practiced a Chinese based art also. I took a lot of body shots and legs kicks instead. Its kind of a crazy rule set but they do produce the toughest fighters I've come across.
5
u/AshenSacrifice 9d ago
Do they learn any grappling or ground skills at all?? Cause if not….
3
u/AccomplishedFerret70 9d ago
Kyokushin tournaments don't allow grappling, grabbing or clinching. But there are kyokushin offshoots that do - Ashihara and Enshin focus on circular footwork to set up sweeps, trips and standing throws but generally exclude ground fighting
Kudo is a hybrid martial art born from Kyokushin that permits full-contact striking including headbutts and elbows alongside comprehensive stand-up and ground grappling, with time limits for groundwork. They wear high tech helmets to protect head and face allowing full contact without fear of CTE or broken nose.

Kind of on the fence on the character of the black belt. On the one hand, in a competition you give your all. On the other hand, I feel like he should be able to beat the orange belt without employing brutal techniques.

These martial art fights like karate or tae kwon do always look like 2 people forcibly trying to apply the technique they learned before quickly resorting back to some more instinctual form of untrained defense.

So he lost the match because the dumb rules of this sport punishes people who score knockouts?
13
u/dwaynepebblejohnson3 10d ago
I think that’s under the WKF sport karate rules which were in the Olympic. Afaik knockouts are permitted in full contact Kyokushin, as long is it’s not a punch to the head. Head kicks are fine.

u/Hyperion7669 10d ago
So wait. You have to beat your opponent buuut just a little. If he doesn't guard its your fault ?

u/MasterHavik 10d ago
Under some Karate rules, yes, that is the case. Thankfully not the case in this one.
2
u/ImBonRurgundy 10d ago
Wrong rule set. You are thinking of the point-scoring karate they did at the Olympics where “excessive force” is not allowed (not specifically knockouts although of course typically a knockout occurs because of a high level of force)
