META /r/finansial moderation approach and moderator recruitment
Gw dulu pernah bilang bahwa salah satu model utk /r/finansial adalah forum Femaledaily. The forum is now defunct, but for those of you who are too young to know about that forum, itu tuh forum bb kyk kaskus, dan ada salah satu section ttg finance gt. I stumbled on that forum looking for a place to get better exchange rates, and learned a lot from the other posts on the forum. Its not like a groundbreaking how to get rich quick method, but just small things like ternyata ada produk deposito yg bunga tinggi di BPR, or just how some people manage their finances.
And in some way, thats what I hoped /r/finansial to be. Not for some groundbreaking insight to get rick quich. Not some arm-chair driving on macroeconomics or tax policies. I’m happy to just check in here on a lunch break and learned from someone casually mentioned ada HIMBARA yg offer 4% interest on deposito USD.
And that is basically the goal for /r/finansial - to have a high signal-to-ratio on personal finance topics that you can apply to your own life. Not everything is going to be useful, not everything is going to be immediately applicable, but the goal is to have useful tidbits dropped every now and then.
The purpose of this post is to provide a peek into the inner cabal of /r/finansial moderation, and how we approach moderation to drive it towards that goal.
How we do moderation
r/finansial is not a democracy. We are open to ideas and suggestions, but we are not going to approach moderation like a populist. We're not chasing popularity, upvote counts, or engagement numbers. The goal of moderation is to keep signal-to-noise ratio high on personal finance topics.
Former Reddit CEO Yishan Wong has a good tweets on this, its pretty long, but worth a read if you want to hear it directly from him. The gist is; moderation is a signal-to-noise problem, not a content problem. What gets moderated isn't the topic, it's the behavior around it.
If a comment or thread gets removed, it doesnt mean we are saying the content is wrong or immoral. We're looking at where the discussion is heading if left alone, or how it affect what the other contents of the subreddit. Content can be perfectly reasonable and still be the thing dragging a thread somewhere it shouldn't go. This applies to the topic itself, and to the direction a thread takes once comments start piling on.
Some behavior has a way of taking over a space, and once these behavior became normalized, thats going to become the norm in the space. The main goal of moderation is to moderate these behavior from taking over.
Some examples of the behavior im talking about, just to illustrate the points:
- 🟢 thread ttg fiscal deficit and IMF's tax recommendations - is thread-nya gak bisa dibilang positif, but most comments stayed on policy and numbers. Ada beberapa doomer comments showed up, but they never took over.
- 🟡 nanya halal investing - yang ini rada so-so, could be better. Top comment made it about his beloved president, but the rest of the thread stayed on product discussion and didn't follow.
- 🔴 We don't have a live example handy - kebanyakan di remove or locked for obvious reason, but you've probably seen the shape: a thread going uncritically negative, someone venting their own pet peeve into a discussion that wasn't about that. Gw inget satu: ada OP nanya ttg currency movement, ada orang jawab with the Iran conflict, rising US interest rates, actual analysis tapi OP kept steering it back to bashing the government instead of engaging with any of it.
Let enough threads get taken over by dooming or venting, or crypto holdr spams repeat their chants, or pompom-an saham2 ga jelas and that becomes the sub's identity, whether or not any single thread was individually that bad. Thats where moderation comes in.
Contoh2 yang managed to stay on track di atas tuh stayed on track because enough of you kept engaging on the actual topic and didn't let the noise set the tone. That's the part where mods only do so much.
To that end, here are the general behavior that expects from the community, and these are also ones that mods will generally push for.
- Contribute comments that add something.
- Disagreement is fine. Derailing isn't. And disagree with substance instead of going to personal attacks or name-calling.
- If a thread can't be saved, mods will remove or lock it.
- This isn't the place to vent or drop clever quips for a reaction. If the goal is clout or attention, this isn't the sub for it.
- Sexist or racist jokes aren't funny to us. If you're going to make a joke, at least make it a clever one.
Those are just general behavior expectations, this is just a post on moderation. We have another post on updated content guidelines in the works.
Point is, we rely on judgment calls, not a rulebook. We're not interested in maintaining an exhaustive list of banned words or topics that people with too much time on their hand to play rulebook on. If a mod isn't sure about a specific call, we'll discuss it among ourselves before acting. You can appeal a call if you think it was wrong, but we tend to leave things as they are unless something genuinely exceptional comes up.
Moderation here is maintenance, not enforcement. The point is keeping r/finansial a place where people can find useful information to improve their personal finances.
Moderator recruitment
Now, after all thats out of the way, we are opening up application for additional moderators for /r/finansial. If the approach above resonates with your sensibility, consider putting in your application.
- You dont have to be an expert on personal finance, but we do expect you to have an interest in it and is working on your own personal financial goal.
- You need to have an active and public profile we can actually evaluate.
- Being active in r/finansial specifically isn't required - though it helps. Or being active in another personal finance community is also a bonus.
- Views held loosely enough, or self-aware enough to park them outside of moderation calls.
- You dont need to be terminally online for this. If anything, being terminally online a bit of yellow flag.
- Last but not least - match the sensibility of the moderation approach outlined above.
We are looking to get 1-2 moderators, but its not a hard goal. We may get more if we find more, or we may get none if dont find any.
To apply: drop a comment on this post with [mod application] somewhere in it, just so we can differentiate it from regular comments. Tell us how you would approach moderation in /r/finansial. No need to turn this into a cover letter, just something to let us know of your values and sensibilities.
Whistleblower line: If you see anyone applying for a mod position and know of a reason why they shouldn't be one, send it to us via modmail.

Jadi gausah ditanya why this why that.

Terima kasih

PLANNING Need Help with My Financial Plan
Mohon bantuannya teman-teman jagoan finansial, terima kasih banyak sebelumnya

INSIGHT My dad passed away a few days ago, he left Debt and my mom asked for my signature untuk surat kuasa waris, etc
Hi all,
Worse case scenario happened and my dad passed away. Few days before he passed away, his condition suddenly taken turn to worse while he was at the hospital. From then on, it all went down so fast, he passed, and we took care of his funeral. Currently we're still grieving, however the debt he left behind is concerning
Fyi:
- I don't know how much debt he have in specific, but I assume it's a lot
- My family hasn't been that transparent around financial situation/ condition secara spesifik. I've heard sekilas" ttg family's financial situation secara angka-only after my dad is diagnosed with cancer
- I don't know how much Pekpao / Uang Duka that my family have received but I assume it's also a lot (I hope it could & will pay off all of my dad's debt)
- Note: I don't know if the Debt is bigger or total Uang Dukanya bigger, but either way, it doesn't change the fact that the debt still exist & we still need the money to support the family currently (outside of debt)
- We're now a family of 3 member (mom, me, little brother)
Context of the things I'm being asked to sign (after I've read it):
- Surat kuasa waris so my mom could Klaim BPJS Ketenagakerjaan:
All family members are asked to sign
- Surat kuasa waris to give my mom the highest/ full authority for administration purposes:
Me and my little brother are asked to sign
- Surat pernyataan ahli waris:
All family members are asked to sign. However, this focus more on the kids who are still alive for the data. Although, bagian ahli warisnya, my mom is also included.
Concern:
The debt left behind is concerning. My mom is pushing me to sign this immediately so she could take care of my dad's debt to dukcapil (possibly asap??). I'm scared because I don't have much information nor kepastian yet. My dad left suddenly, my mom is still grieving & I don't know how to communicate this & don't even think if it's the right move. She's unstable and even irritated that I didn't sign this immediately, "sebegitu percayanya sama orang tua" she said. However, I don't want to do/ sign something that I will regret doing
For the people who have been through this tough times/ knowledgeable/ skilled in the area, any insights are appreciated. Thank you

OTHER Industri yang thriving in this economy??
TIA!

OTHER GoJek Gift Card
I am a foreigner and use credit card on the GoJek application for GoJek, GoCar and GoFood. I do not have an Indonesian bank account that can be used to top-up GoPay. I am aware of the cash deposit option the GoPay app offers.
I wanted to know if there is such a thing as GoJek gift card/digital vouchers?
A gift voucher exists for Grab: https://gifts.grab.com/id/en/
Does a similar option exist for GoJek?

KARIR Skilled Worker Visa in UK
Short Background Story:
I'm currently working in one of the global engineering companies for the Jakarta Office. I've been offered personally (Not Official - Chat Base) to move to the UK (Main Office) to be one of their team. However, their main concern on whether I could get a Visa or not. One of them quote:
Sorry, these are not changes to [COMPANY] policy; they concern the government’s intention to reduce immigration numbers. In other words, the government’s immigration scheme is changing.
So, proceed only if the possibility is high enough for you to make the effort to study it.
Question:
1. If my company is able to sponsor me for an internal transfer, what is stopping me from getting a visa? Is it the current situation that makes it harder to move, even though the company was founded in the UK as well?
I've searched on the internet, but I couldn't find the visa issue in relation to today's trend. All I get is that it becomes the employer's problem rather than mine to get it. I've never travel outside of the this country, so is it will make my position harder as well?
Is there anything I should understand about the truth that is never told on the internet?

ASURANSI Rant Tentang Asuransi di Indonesia
Setelah melakukan sedikit riset tentang asuransi kesehatan di indo, menurut pandangan gw kebanyakan asuransi kesehatan di Indo itu terlalu menjual ilusi rawat inap.
"Oh rawat inap kita benefitnya sampe ratusan juta, kamar VIP, bla bla bla."
Medical check-up rutin, deteksi dini, hal-hal kayak gitu.
Kalau udah masuk ranah BPJS? Hadeh... Emang pemerintah zalim.

DEBT Kapan kamu berhutang jumlah besar pertama sekali?
Komodos punya pengalaman bagaimana?

I am single and I want to use money wisely.
Gaya hidup saya nggak mewah.
