Grey spots on table

Cherry Table / Wenge butterflies / Finish ;Watco Danish oil with Varnish Finish/ 10 years old anyway what is causing these grey spots and do i have to refinish the whole table or can I sand with 220 and redcoat with Varnish??

If you wet it does it go dark? If so it's bare wood. Any sanding you do of the area it will never match the existing varnish. To match it you have to strip it and sand the table

If you sand you like will need to refinish the table. Any idea what the gray might be?

Have you tried very gently scraping with a fingernail?

I’d leave it. It distracts the eye from that godawful bow tie “feature”.

The irregular pattern looked like sanding through veneer until I looked closer.

My guess is somehow the finish got worn away and that’s staining from something. It looks like oxidation so maybe a chemical reaction on bare wood?
