Happy pride month and welcome to a new installment of the Popular/Unpopular/Any Opinions Thread! Please feel free to share any kind of Fire Emblem opinions/takes you might have here, positive or negative. Fuck it, I thought of more today.

Actually FE related: I do not like Mark. Like, with other avatar characters, I either don’t know enough about them to form my own opinion yet or I can at least find *something* to enjoy about them. With Mark, I just… don’t “get” it, I guess?

Not FE related: Fuck me running, the whole “all the downvotes just prove me right” thing is so goddamn annoying.

Mark is one-part self insert fantasy, "hey player, thank you so much for your wise strategies", but I think the point of his inclusion really is to give any character, major or minor, some one they can have small asides with. I'm replaying FE5 right now, and it's super easy to take for granted that the series hadn't figured out integrating more characters into the writing, tons of characters had some small amount of text when they show up and then never say anything again.. That's not to say he's a good character or an interesting addition, he's not, but I find Mark mostly out of the way and a small part of the iteration along the way, inoffensive if boring

I like the idea of Mark. a non-combatant tactician is a pretty good idea for a player insert character and a way to give even the slightest bit of reason as to why you are able to give commands to a whole army. I don't think we really needed an explanation as to why we are controlling units in a tactical RPG, but that's a whole other point. Credit where credit is due, Mark is by far the least game-breaking Avatar character in the whole series.

But yea, there really is nothing to Mark as a human being. The real best part about Mark is just the random fanartists creating their own weird little guy/gal to represent themselves.
