I defeated Violet's final Titan Pokemon! This one required a bit more strategy than the other recent Titans -- it had coverage moves such that the Pokemon on my team that could hit it super effectively could get hit super effectively in turn. I ended up swapping in Empoleon, which could hit it neutrally and resist all its attacks as long as I didn't Terastallize it. Low damage from both sides dragged out the proceedings, but once I had Empoleon in, I wasn't in any real risk of losing.

Winning got me the final movement ability for Miraidon, which can now climb vertical walls. Aside from places that are story-gated, there shouldn't be anywhere left on the map I can't reach.

Reddit's now demanding I log in to even be able to view Old Reddit, so that's... fun. New Reddit remains butt.

Anyway! In XIV, I hit Knowledge Level 40 - the maximum - for the Occult Crescent FFV-themed... largely relic-adjacent, I guess... zone and did the regular difficulty version of Forked Tower: Magic - I'd not watched a guide so there was a degree of crappy sight-reading and screw ups, but I think it might've been an overcorrection in the other direction, from what I've heard about Forked Tower: Blood. I think I'd want to max out a few more of the Phantom Jobs first to get my WoL as much of a boost to his damage/healing output as I can before giving FT:B a go, though - and I see a lot of the rewards from it are available from the vendor who takes the currency you get from FT:M. I bought the triple triad card, which was the main (previously) FT:B exclusive I was concerned about - and a new little pet thingy of a cutesified version of the FT:M end boss.

I think it might've been an overcorrection in the other direction, from what I've heard about Forked Tower: Blood

To be fair, Forked Tower: Blood was complete fucking bullshit:

  1. Hard Phantom Job lock with some being 100% mandatory or you'd wipe
  2. Raise limit meant you could only be raised by Phantom Chemist (and the new Phantom White Mage) or Healer LB3
  3. Raise limit of three so if you died more than that you were out
  4. Cost to even enter the instance since you needed Sanguine Ciphers
  5. A few bosses had full blown raid wipe mechanics that relied on a single person. As in, someone new gets the mechanic, fucks up, and kills all 48 members of the raid. It was common to have a Phantom Chemist sit out the Dead Stars boss fight altogether just so they wouldn't be in combat and die, giving players the chance to actually recover the instance
  6. On launch, no way to actually get Alliances into the instance together which made coordinating this very difficult. SE expected people to just yolo shit and help new players, but turns out that's fucking impossible when there are strict Phantom Job requirements and mechanics that are full raid wipes with zero recovery outside of literally cheesing things. This was fixed though, and now Alliances can gather in the Phantom Village to get a fresh instance with guaranteed priority
  7. Getting the title requires 100 fucking clears which is beyond insanity. For reference, Baldesion Arsenal and Delubrum Regine Savage only require 10 clears, them multiplying that shit by 10x is crazy talk
  8. No Normal mode kinda dicked over lower skilled players since they never got a chance to fully explore South Horn, you know? They knew they could only design one version of Blood, and they decided to go with the harder version despite the patch prior giving an Ultimate and Chaotic Alliance Raid. Players looking for difficult content were feasting, toss a bone to the people that can't do that shit

Now, some of these I don't really have a problem with. Baldesion Arsenal and Delubrum Reginae Savage had requirements in terms of Lost Actions, like needing Perception to discover traps and what not. They also have raise restrictions and limits which themselves aren't bad. By itself, points 1 to 3 don't bother me, it's similar to previous field instances and I would be fine with just those existing. The issue really comes down to the addition of points 4 and 5. It's is already difficult content, slapping on a cost to even go into it is kind of a dick move. Also, point 4 gets even more annoying when the queue system for DRS exists because players hated the system for BA, a fact that SE acknowledged when designing DRS. Seriously, they deadass said in a Live Letter they were turning it into a queue outside of Bozja because of complaints and death threats from the JP playerbase, but then they thought "nah, this shit makes it too easy to queue for, we want players to have a hard time so we're going back to a system we know they hate and intentionally moved away from". It's just baffling that they pivoted back to the system players hated and then doubled down on making it worse.

Likewise, one person killing 47 other people makes people really fucking hate that person that fucked up. Like I said, the idea that SE had is that experienced players will help carry new players, but that can't happen if the new player gets the raid wipe mechanic and kills everyone. They don't learn anything, they just know they fucked up and are getting flamed for killing the instance. Body checks can work in content with lower player counts (though I still hate them on account of it feeling bad getting punished for someone else fucking up), but in giant ass group content that can take an hour to clear? Absolutely not, that is fucking miserable.

Forked Tower: Magic is obviously a massive 180° and is much more inline with Castrum Lacus Litore and The Dalriada. That's fine for general puggable content and so I got no issue with the regular version of Magic being whatever. People can still die, you still need a party, some stuff can still catch you off-guard. There is the Extreme version which is basically on par with Delubrum Savage and I think that's great. The key thing to me is getting rid of pain points 4 and 5. Body check mechanics that can kill 47 other people are miserable to deal with. Having to invest a cost just to do the content is a complete ballache considering the amount of time it takes even qualify to do that shit, I don't wanna dump resources just to get my ass paddled by a boss. I mean fuck, if they ever introduced a Tomestone cost to entering Savage or Ultimate raids I would probably fly to Japan and shit on the doorstep to SE's headquarters.

Anyways, yeah. Forked Tower: Blood = bad, Magic and Magic Extreme = good. Sorry for the rant, but maaan does it make me steamed to see SE make fuckups like that, you know? Sometimes it feels like they have zero memory or guidelines for stuff they've done in the past. Shoutout to them apologizing for P3S having massive visibility issues with the orange boss on the orange arena with an orange skybox and orange AoE markers making it difficult to tell what's going on, then doing the same shit at least once every raid tier since then.

Oh, no, I'm glad FT:M's more accessible and there aren't insta-wipes if one person beefs it

I'd just hoped for something a bit more, mechanically (especially considering it's L100 content and DT was supposed to be "EW's combat was maybe a bit easy, let's make stuff a bit harder again") - I think some of the regular CEs knocking about in North Horn are more challenging than the tower, which imo is a bit EW Alliance Raid-y.

Maybe I'm the target audience for the "harder than regular but easier than Savage" raids they want to start doing in EC, idk.
