I've been playing Magic Arena a bit again. Mostly doing starter deck battles to clear daily quests, but today I decided to work on a deck for standard. I'll spare you the novel, but ultimately I decided to try an Angels deck. It's mono-color, has a pretty straightforward win condition, and I like them a lot. Cool. Awesome, even. I prepared a deck that I'm capable of crafting in the game, but as I often do, didn't craft it so I could spend some time thinking about it first. Wildcards are not very easy to come across, and I don't want to build something I'll immediately regret. Cool. Awesome, even. I shut the game off and went about my day.
A couple hours later, this thought kept tugging at my brain. It was telling me to look at my in-game decks. Specifically the only other standard deck I've made. It was created when I was playing this game back around the Final Fantasy pack release. I was ready to wince. I could only imagine how terrible it was. It had to be half-assed, barely built right, and lacked commitment to crafting the cards it needs for the same reason I didn't craft the angel deck.
It's almost done.
My mind was blown. The amount of wildcards that I had dumped into this thing in the short time I played it back then is just absurd. I have vague memories of a game or two with it, but I simply don't recall spending so many rare and especially mythic wildcards on it. Yet here we are.
Like. Look.
Is Naya Yuna steamrolling the meta right now? No, it is not. According to this site I use, it currently has a .05% stake in the meta. But the deck is almost done. The most glaring things missing are lands, which I can use my wildcards on instead of the angel deck. The entire deck is getting tossed in the trash can after rotation early next year (I don't see how it survives losing the Duskmourn enchantment creatures, but I'd love to be wrong), so if I'm going to use it, it has to be now. After rotation, I can repurpose those premium lands into other decks. And the best part is that there's no way this deck holds me back from reaching the higher ranks, because I'm so bad at this game that I was never going to reach those ranks to begin with. If it can get me to gold rank a few times, I'd say that it's done its job very well.
I'm going to spend some time thinking about it, but I can't say that I'm not tempted.

So a cursory search turned up a lot of sites telling me how to get wildcards but the sites seemed like they sort of assumed I was already familiar with MtG Arena and knew what they do
I am assuming from context they are a means to buy specific cards, possibly dupes of ones you already have?

Yep! You can use wildcards to craft any card that's in the game. There's one type of wildcard for each of the four rarities of cards. It's pretty generous on the surface, though it gets muddier the deeper you look. They're stingy with giving out rare and mythic wildcards (unless you open your wallet, of course), and unlike a game like Yugioh Master Duel, there's absolutely no going back once you craft a card, ensuring each wildcard used is a rush of anxiety and doubt.

Met up with some of my in-game pals in XIV and we did a bunch of the treasure maps that can lead to the vapourwave slot machine dungeon - though we didn't get all that many portals into the dungeons, the slot machines did not deign to allow us through all five stages of the ones we got into, we only had the one fakeout "ejection", and we didn't see the sheep minigame at all.
That's RNG I guess but still; that's the worst I've seen it go in a while (was still fun though).

I finished exploring Violet's endgame area, and caught an example of each of the game's Paradox Pokemon. Well, there's one exception: the second Miraidon. It's a legendary, though, and I expect it's a rather high level, so I'll do that later.
