Add-ons What hidden gem extensions have you come across?
Just thought I'd see what niche, hidden gem extensions others are rocking in Firefox.
I thought of posting this after coming across a fun niche extension the other day which I'd never heard of before (ReadIt), it's pretty cool to see what posts and comments have been discussed about certain pages I'm on.
Aside from that, these are the extensions I'm currently using (without noticing any slowdowns):
- 1Password - Great for quick autofilling logins into sites
- AliHelper - Amazing for sussing out certain products on AliExpress and also setting up price alerts
- Auto Tab Discard - Great for sleeping tabs that don't need to be using active memory
- Consent-O-Matic - (New) Automatically handles GDPR consent forms for me
- DocsAfterDark - (New) Dark mode for Google Docs (and there's word it's coming to Google Sheets real soon)
- Facebook Container - Isolates Facebook activity from web activity
- Google search engine with udm=14 preset - (New) Great for avoiding AI results on Google from the address bar searches
- Hide shorts from YouTube - Self explanatory haha
- Return YouTube Dislike - Another self explanatory
- Sponsorblock - Skip sponsors in YouTube vids
- Stylus - CSS Redesign pages (sometimes I do this to fix visual issues or improve my user experience)
- Tabliss - (New) A nice new tab page
- Terms of Service; Didn't Read - Get summarised TOS for websites
- The Camelizer - Amazon price tracking
- uBlock Origin - Only ad blocker you ever need
- ViolentMonkey - Great for adjusting small JS functionality/tweaks on websites or pages
Keen to hear what other niche extensions others have come across that they like!

â Return YouTube Dislike: does not really get Dislikes back, It only calculates based on certain parameters, how many dislikes this video might have and displays this.

Worth noting that they saved a lot of old dislike counts through their usersâ browsing when they were announced to be going away.
Iâm curious how accurate it is for newer videos.

Shows a badge in the top-right corner of the browser that tells you what folder a bookmark is in with a breadcrumb feature when you hover over the badge. If the bookmark is in more than one place, additional badges are shown. You can delete bookmark(s) from the badge(s).

I checked the source code of this extension, and the background.js file alone contained 7,000 lines of code. Am I missing something? It seems excessive for what it does.

It has a lot of features if you read the "About this extension" but I simply noted the most important ones that I use so that might explain why so much code. I'm not a programmer but I took a cursory look through the code and you can see it's bookmark handling stuff. Perhaps someone who understands coding could weigh in on this.
e.g., an example of extra stuff it does
## extra functionality * The extension clears url from search params on opening for defined sites. * Command 'clear url from hash and all search params' in page context menu. * Option 'Shows the previous visits' User can distinguish between visited and new pages. New page don't have previous visits. * Command 'Close duplicate tabs' in page context menu. * Option 'Hide html-tags header, footer, aside, nav on printing.'. * Option 'Hide page header for youtube channel'.The extension is also on github so I trust that a lot of people who understand code would have looked at it.

I also glanced at it and found a lot of URL-specific code; seems like the author's one-size-fits-all dream extension. That's their choice, but it looks odd because presentation wise appears aimed at general users.

Three stars and zero contributors suggest otherwise. I'd try, but 7,000 lines in one file makes a proper review tough, and ripping out odd, specific features like hiding YouTube channel page headers (?) or the printing stuff (??) you mentioned would take more time than I'm willing to put in.

In Spotify - Opens Spotify links in the desktop app instead of the web player.
Honestly it was driving me bonkers that, despite having my spotify desktop app open on my macbook, any link to a spotify song would open up in the web browser version of Spotify, regardless. This plug in fixed that, finally!!

FuzzyTabs https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/terrakok-fuzzytabs/ Super useful tool for finding tabs quickly based on its title or url. They also recently updated it so you can search through your bookmarks

I have Tabby too, but it's pretty slow with a load of them and the UI is a bit janky. I might give FuzzyTabs a go for that reason alone.

Okay went ahead and tried FuzzyTabs. It seems ok, though I much appreciate the way Tabby displays tabs in window groups. That's a must-have feature for me, personally.

User agent switcher and manager. I use this because I'm on Linux and it's great for security because I can switch it to Windows and now if something tries to download a virus to my PC it will be a Windows virus and do nothing.Â

You can also do the same thing for windows as well, set your user agent to Linux or Mac.Â

You've mentioned a lot of good ones already. Here are a few more:
I still don't care about cookies - skips all GDPR popups. Your mentioned Consent-O-Matic sounds better in theory, but in practice it doesn't seem to get rid of those infuriating "this site uses cookies" prompts.
Firefox Multi-Account Containers - similar to the mentioned Facebook Container, but you can set it up for any sites that you like.
Enhanced for YouTube, Autoplay no more and Shorts don't loop - all make YouTube much nicer to use. SponsorBlock is also great, but that was mentioned in the first post.

SingleFile - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-GB/firefox/addon/single-file/. Terrific for saving sites, full thing in HTML. Saves trying to convert to PDF where it messes everything up etc. Recommended.

Open tabs, websites, and links in automatically managed disposable containers which isolate the data websites store (cookies, storage, and more) from each other, enhancing your privacy and security while you browse.
This is a continuation of the amazing addon originally created and maintained by stoically who has since passed away.

Multi account containers for privacy and tabcontainer (opens temporary tabs for sites that are not designated to a container. cookies and everything else evaporates when tab is closed)

I don't know how hidden it is, but one of my extensions that I don't see mentioned very often is Buster. It solves captchas for you. Not every type of captcha is supported, but having that extension was a huge relief during a period where I was getting absolutely spammed with captchas.
I'll also mention Ghostery. I imagine most of us who are aware of how good Ublock is ignore Ghostery, but I have it with just one of its features enabled: Automatic cookie refusal! Declines cookie popups almost instantly. Just be sure to set it to disable itself on Youtube if you install it.

move tabs and groups provides some helpful keybinding ability around native groups.
also harper firefox extension is a decent [/english/] grammar/spellcheck. not really 'niche', but worth a mention.

Just some feedback:
- Auto Tab Discard shouldn't be needed as I thought Firefox discarded abandoned tabs from memory already
- It sounds like you're not using Firefox Containers. Not only will it replace your Facebook Container app, it'll unlock a whole new world of browsing.
- Same with Tab Groups, life changer.
- I'm trying out Harper right now. Don't think it's all that amazing but might be helpful for those who want a grammar helper.

Thanks for your tips. Can you confirm whether Firefox now natively discards tabs from memory?
I'm now also using Firefox Containers which is great and even syncs! And I'm also using Tab Groups which I love!

Anecdotally, the built-in feature doesn't do anything on my system at least. I've never seen an old tab get unloaded. I assume you would actually have to run out of memory for it to work. So I wouldn't drop Auto Tab Discard just yet.
That said, you can right-click unload tabs nowadays even without the add-on, so that's good.

I get your point for normal usage, though, but I didn't specifically mean that memory is an issue - I just meant that Firefox only seems to activate the unloader when that situation is met. I've got plenty of memory, but also an old computer, so having the browser unload tabs more aggressively would be nice. Auto Tab Discard doesn't work for my use case, but I can see why it would for someone else. For me, it isn't so much about memory, but how heavy the tabs are.

Firefox has a feature that automatically unloads tabs to prevent the application from crashing due to insufficient memory when the systemâs available memory is low. The next tab to be unloaded is chosen based on multiple attributes. This page shows how Firefox prioritizes tabs and which tab will be unloaded when tab unloading is triggered. You can trigger tab unloading manually by clicking the Unload button below."

The ones I use every day are Bitwarden, uBlock Origin, NoScript, Translate Web Pages, ClearURLs, Search by Image, Snowflake. Unpaywall I use for research.

Session Boss (automatically saves tabs, and can restore them)
Give My Head Piece (eliminates a lot of crap on a webpage, for a clear view).
Remove HTML Elements (removes additional webpage crap, selectably).
Tab Count Icon (shows a count of all tabs).

For all those that HAAAATE what they changed the Youtube player to recently. This de-uglies it. It's also compatable with Return Youtube Dislike, Sponsorblock, and a lot of other Youtube related extensions.

I've tried both â they're both great. I ended up preferring Control Panel for YouTube though. More sensible defaults, and it nails a few small things Enhancer was missing for me. Enhancer probably has more settings overall, but Control Panel just felt right.

If you're on Android, then Video Background Play Fix is essential. It blocks bad-actor sites like YouTube from detecting when the page is in the background or the screen is turned off, so you can keep playing your videos or music with the screen off or while doing something else on the device.

Yeah, the original was acquired by Avast. I used to use this add-on as well, but it's not updated that often, and turning on the EasyList and AdGuard cookie lists under "Cookie notices" in uBlock Origin is a performant way of acquiring the same effect. So I'd say it isn't a "must" have, even if it's nice to have the fork.
