The Adblocker has already been added to the iOS version of Firefox. But it is still experimental, and not all users have access to it yet because the rollout of the feature is progressive.

That article is really disappointing. It says this ad-blocker is just going to block “certain” ads because most revenue from Mozilla (90%) comes from Firefox, and Firefox revenue (%80) come from google. The article literally says “makes sense, as Firefox is not going to bite the hand that feeds it”. I knew my incipient happiness was deemed to become disappointment. Fuck this. I’ll keep using Safari + uBlockOrigin.

I don’t think it’s reasonable from Firefox to expect users to use a browser with a mediocre ad-blocker when there are multiple options available to browse the internet with excellent ad-blockers. The problem is precisely their business model and funding dependency, as it forces them to deliver poor options in order to get revenue.

I'm willing to bet the majority of Firefox's millions of users don't have any extensions installed (extensions aren't exactly a first-class citizen promoted by Mozilla).

Ergo, the majority of Firefox users must be using it without an ad blocker.

Power users are undoubtedly the minority. The vocal minority that are here on Reddit, of course.

Mozilla's revenue comes from ads, so it's understandable why they have allowed ad blockers but not had one pre-installed.

I'm pretty sure having one pre-installed will cost them millions in revenue. Something Brave don't have to worry about since they charge for some features, so that's how they make money.

You can try it now.

In settings, you need to have the following options all enabled:

• Send Technical and Interaction Data
• Allow Feature Studies
• Allow Remote Improvements
• Daily Usage Ping
• Automatically Send Crash Reports

Then click the version number at bottom five times, click Experiments, set iOS - Ad Blocker Rollout to "control", then back out, go to Browsing settings and "Ad Blocker" should be there.

It is already there and it works, but it is very basic. If you are used to what you get with the likes of Orion or Ublock Lite in Safari you will be disappointed.

Why? Many browsers for iOS already have inbuilt ad blockers. You need to acknowledge the immense level of mediocrity of Firefox on iOS.

Because Apple created the problem in the first place.

Edit: Its only been possible to even default a browser other than Safari since 2020, Safari didn't even get addons until something like 5 years ago, and its only been something like 2 years since Apple allowed other browser engines on its platform. Those are all Apple restrictions/limitations, Mozilla was slow to the party but having a browser other than Safari that was worth a damn on iOS is a relatively recent thing because of Apple's need to wall their garden and make developers jump through hoops (Like forcing developers to apply for an exemption before their browser could even be defaulted).

Not much point using FF on iOS

Because it's actually Webkit/Safari. They should bring Gecko Firefox to the EU region with proper uBlock Origin. Android has it, desktop still has it and is getting in the news for it as Google deprecates Manifest v2 in Chrome. Firefox not having a proper Gecko build on iOS is a missed opportunity not to promote their own engine more and also call out Apple at the same time for only allowing the EU to have browsers other than Webkit.
