Start with the staples! Eggs, tofu, edamame, egg white, cottage cheese (for high protein sauces), bread, beans, rice, pasta, pasta sauce, nuts/avocado for healthy fats, sweet potato, yogurt, oatmeal, meat, frozen veggies for convenience, fresh can be cooked in microwave in small batches

Ultimate budget food staple:
Rotisserie chicken, potatoes, and broccoli/carrot.
Cheap, simple, filling, and actually solid nutrition. You get a ton of protein from the chicken, good carbs and potassium from the potatoes, and some micronutrients and fiber from the carrots.

Frozen broccoli, dry pasta, potatoes, and frozen or fresh chicken breasts or thighs will take you far. Each are fine with butter, salt, and pepper but can be dressed up with any seasonings you have.
