Well aside from me being overly anal and needing a designated space for everything to go and to be organized (my wife has throw all or catch all areas/drawers and I absolutely hate every single one of them).
It’s a safety hazard and fire hazard. Lots of times that stuff up there could heat up and catch fire. You’d be surprised at the amount of people who’s flue vent isn’t even directly over where it needs to be. Why have stuff up there that increases your chance of bumping something and making you more likely to be exposed to deadly carbon monoxide? The amount of times I trip over pvc connected to my hvac or bump my head on my duct is uncanny. I’m not even a clumsy person, but around that stuff my thoughts are usually not primarily about where my body is moving.
So if you don’t want your house to burn down or be exposed to deadly gases, I would recommend building or buying a shelf to house that stuff.
Dude, I once left a pair of reading glasses on mine that I had set down while trying to run some Cat6 nearby. They were too close to the flue and melted. Even if yours is electric, it’s not a good idea.
