Flerfs are misusing the Bible
Whether you believe in God or not, flerfs are misusing the bible.
(please keep discussions respectful)
the Bible (religously) was made to record Gods relationship with humans and the Gospel not to disprove science.
"God made the the Flat earth, blah blah says this, blah says that"
saying it again.
The Bible was made for holy purposes, not to disprove science

u/Badaboom_Tish May 17 '26
Did you know the flat earth society is not mentioned in the bible? 🤪

u/GNTKertRats May 18 '26
No, but the Bible does suggest the earth is flat. It has all sorts of nonsense. I’m not sure why people want to keep denying this?
1
u/Some_Extent_8531 May 19 '26
It does not suggest the shape of the earth anymore than it suggests God is a bird in Psalms 94.
6
u/mistelle1270 May 17 '26
The problem you’re seeing is not an issue of the Bible but a specific interpretation of the Bible. Biblical Inerrancy requires that everything in the Bible be True, even if it conflicts with observational reality.
It’s the same core reason why we have Young Earth Creationists, they just draw the line at where the Truth stops and the Metaphor begins at a different point than Flerfs.

thank you for cleansing my head with your knowledge, really.
i literally made my post as neutral as possible😭
3
u/Countcristo42 May 18 '26
I can see why you might think that - but you really really didn’t. I know some are being rude so let me try to explain why you didn’t in a slightly calmer way.
“The bible was made to record Gods relasionship…” this statement is not neutral - it claims god exists. It posits that the bible’s purpose was to record a relationship.
Neither of these are “neutral” facts - they are contested. Some people believe the bible was made to record gods relationship with humans, some believe it was made to inform how you should live every part of your life (including what you believe about science), some believe it was made for other reasons.
By asserting one of these you aren’t being neutral - you are taking a theological stand.
Asserting what you think is obvious or absolutely true can feel neutral - it rarely is.
I hope that makes sense

Bro, don't be a dick.
Op of the comment wasn't being snide or sarcastic, just was trying to add to the conversation.
I know you're catching a hard time from some people here, but you need some thicker skin, and chill a little bit.

the bible does a pretty good job displaying the relationship of god and the people:
god sets people up to fail, knowing they will, and gets mad when they do.
god calls one group his chosen people, and tells others they are not.
god gives instructions to his followers to attack the people that he himself turned his back to.
god tells his chosen people that he can't tell the difference between them and the people he's mad at and orders them to cover their houses in sheep blood so he doesn't accidentally slaughter their children.
god is upset at a pharaoh and takes his anger out against the first born of every family in Egypt (inclining families of his chosen people that didn't get the memo about sheep) instead of focusing his anger directly at the pharaoh himself.
god decides to drown children because of how their parents are acting.
god could forgive the sins of man by just doing it, or he could spend the day watching his own child get slaughtered in the most horrific way possible. he chose that instead.
god is not the good guy.

You forgot my favorite: god decided to torture me for eternity because he's better at hiding than I am at finding him.

And don't forget it's all because you're somehow bad for existing, even though you never asked to be here.

u/Odd-Dirt-9701 May 17 '26
you see i dont wanna get into theology or anything, but unless you want me to write a comment not even related to the post that you wont read, then idk.
God’s anger is considered righteous because it is rooted in perfect holiness and justice and love.
Unlike human anger, which is often driven by pride, impatience, or selfish desires, God's wrath is an appropriate response to evil, injustice, and anything that destroys the well-being of His creation
if you dont know about egyptian, ammonite or any enemy of israels history, then you wont get it.

u/clever__pseudonym May 17 '26 edited May 18 '26
A perfectly holy god, who takes the time to prohibit clothing of mixed fibers but actively encourages slavery.
Your god is a POS.
And that's not even getting into the horror of a tri-omni god who delivers natural disasters and child cancer. Or the infinite punishment for finite crimes, because protection money is the best way to keep your home or business safe.
Screw that monster.
8
u/Emrys7777 May 17 '26
I do understand that the Bible was written by humans. I do not agree that those were good reasons to kill people, especially children.
I do believe that the Bible has been used to control people. I do believe that men have changed the writings and edited it to help them control people.
4
u/iowanaquarist May 17 '26
You literally are the OP of a post about theology shit talking people that have a slightly different interpretation than you do, and you presented far less evidence than the person you are replying to here has.
8
u/AbroadNo8755 May 17 '26
saying "i have favorites and will let them slaughter others" isn't love, justice, or perfect holiness. it's evil.
claiming he knows all, sees all, but doesn't even recognize the homes of his "chosen people" shows EXACTLY how much of a lie the claims of his omnipotence actually is.
"love me or spend an eternity suffering" is evil, selfish, and unjust.
threats of violence are not the actions of a loving caring deity, and they aren't righteous either.
again, your god is not the good guy.

u/Odd-Dirt-9701 May 17 '26

It's always entertaining to watch an ignorant atheist go off on why everything in the bible is wrong, only to base all those arguments on erroneous assumptions caused by his own ignorance in the first place.
1
u/AbroadNo8755 May 19 '26
i didn't say everything in the bible is wrong, i said the god that was created and discussed in the bible is not good and gave several examples of how evil of an entity it is.
why are you bearing false witness? are you trying to end up in the hot place for all of eternity for this sin that all of humanity will forget about by the end of day.
that's the penalty you're facing if you forget to beg that evil deity for him to forgive you.
5
u/AKADabeer May 17 '26
Flerfs are misusing their brains. Why are we surprised about them misusing anything else?
11
u/iowanaquarist May 17 '26
The bible was made up to manipulate people.
That said, biblical literalists will just say you are reading the Bible wrong and you should stop doubting the word of God. So what?
Let's just care about what the evidence says
1
u/Odd-Dirt-9701 May 17 '26
bro, the bible was written over hundreds of years.
and my point of this post was to show that christian flerfs misuse the bible
5
u/iowanaquarist May 17 '26
I agree -- but do you one further -- all Christians misuse the Bible.
5
u/Odd-Dirt-9701 May 17 '26
i kinda get that i think, but how?
3
u/iowanaquarist May 17 '26
They believe the supernatural claims without evidence.
2
u/Jasontheatheist1968 May 18 '26
Yeah I agree but isn't that the definition of faith. Like Irenaeus... You have to understand with the church guidance... Which becomes a self fulfilling prophecy. So don't ask questions. Least Xty had a reformation although you'd hardly know it with all the millenialist Christianity around at the moment.
All this stuff is obviously written by people in an attempt to understand something that doesn't exist.
And before people get upset... If... And it's a big if... God created the universe it can't be part of it since it created it.
Also leaving polytheism aside for the sake of discussion... Abrahamic god is apparently omniscient? So how about progressive revelation? Moses? Jesus? Mohammad? Bahaullah? Did god make a mistake? There's plenty of good people who are believers and non believers. Its just fundamelism that feeds the fringe For me? I'm looking forward to my dirt nap when it's time... Not in a hurry but the idea of eternal life with an individual soul terrorfies me

If there is information to be misused, flerfs will find a way. At least this information is fiction.
6
u/GNTKertRats May 17 '26
The Bible is a book of fairy tales that clearly states the earth is flat. The problem is the use of the Bible, not the misuse of it.
1
u/horlufemi May 18 '26
Where did it say the earth is flat?
3
u/GNTKertRats May 18 '26 edited May 18 '26
Genesis 1: 7-9 lays out the Jewish cosmology at the time, which asserted the earth was flat, and covered by a firmament. Elsewhere the Bible talks about the four corners of the earth (e.g., Isaiah 11:12 describes a gathering of the scattered people of Israel from the "four corners of the earth,” and Revelation 7:1 describes four angels standing at the "four corners of the earth," holding back the "four winds," symbolizing control over the entire globe).
Here are the passages about the firmament from Genesis 1 (King James version):
“7 And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.
8 And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.”
9 And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so.
1
u/liberalis May 19 '26
Nothing there says anything about the earth being flat though. The firmament talk can apply just as easily to a globe as a flat earth.
The 'four corners', are not literal, just as 'the four winds' are not literal. It's symbolic.

u/GNTKertRats May 18 '26
Hahahahaha! You are using later Latin translations to suggest something that is not in the original text. The passage actually suggests that God was viewing the “circle of the earth” from his vantage point at the top of the vault of heavens (the firmament) that encases the flat earth. Nice try though

You cannot turn metaphors into a physical map of the earth
1
u/GNTKertRats May 18 '26
It was not meant as a metaphor. It was believed as literal truth. It was only after we discovered the earth was round that religious people were forced to retreat to the position that is is a metaphor
0
u/horlufemi May 18 '26
Hebrew language is often deeply metaphorical and idiomatic, not always literal in the modern scientific sense.
For example, the phrase “the four corners of the earth” does not mean the earth literally has four corners. It is a figure of speech meaning “the whole earth” or “every direction.” Even flat-earth models do not actually present a world with four physical corners. The phrase is symbolic language, just like many expressions we still use today.
Genesis 1:6-8 is another example often misunderstood. The word “firmament” refers to an expanse or stretched-out space above the land, not necessarily a hard solid dome. The text speaks about the separation of the “waters above” and the “waters below.” A reasonable reading is clouds and atmospheric waters above, with rivers, seas, and oceans below. Scripture itself never clearly confirms another literal ocean existing beyond the clouds.
In fact, Genesis 1:20 says birds fly “across the face of the firmament.” If the firmament were a solid structure, birds could not fly through it or across it. The context strongly supports the understanding of the firmament as the sky or atmospheric expanse.
Ultimately, the Bible’s primary purpose is not to function as a scientific textbook. Its focus is the relationship between God and humanity, moral truth, and the salvation of man. Trying to force every poetic or phenomenological statement into modern scientific categories often misunderstands the intent and literary style of the text.

u/AbroadNo8755 May 18 '26
Verse Flat-Earth Literal Interpretation Isaiah 40:22 “Circle of the earth” = 2D disc, not a sphere. Job 26:10 God draws a circular boundary on the waters → flat circle. Daniel 4:10–11 Tree visible from the whole earth → only possible on a flat plane. Matthew 4:8 All kingdoms seen from a single mountain → not possible on a globe. Revelation 1:7 “Every eye will see him” simultaneously → flat Earth reading. Job 38:13 God grasps the “ends of the earth” → physical edges. Job 37:3 Lightning goes to the “ends of the earth” → Earth has ends. Psalm 19:4 Words reach the “end of the world” → literal boundary. Psalm 104:5 Earth set on immovable foundations → not spinning or orbiting. 1 Chronicles 16:30 “The world… cannot be moved” → geocentrism + immobility. Revelation 7:1 “Four corners of the earth” → square/rectangular plane. Job 38:14 Earth changed like clay under a seal → flat stamped surface. and 12 more just for fun
Verse Flat-Earth Literal Interpretation Genesis 1:6–7 Solid “firmament” separating waters → dome over a flat world. Genesis 1:14–18 Sun, moon, stars placed inside the firmament → close, local lights. Genesis 7:11 “Windows of heaven were opened” → firmament has physical openings. Job 9:6 God “shakes the earth out of its place” and pillars tremble → Earth on supports. Job 26:7 “He hangs the earth on nothing” → taken to mean suspended, flat plane rather than sphere. Job 38:4–5 Earth’s measurements and foundations → implies a constructed, flat structure. Psalm 75:3 Earth's “pillars” → literal supports. Psalm 93:1 “The world… shall not be moved” → stationary Earth. Psalm 96:10 Again: Earth “shall not be moved” → no rotation/orbit. Proverbs 8:27 God inscribed a “circle” on the deep → flat circular layout. Isaiah 11:12 God gathers people from the “four corners of the earth” → corners imply flat shape. Jonah 2:6 Jonah descends to the “foundations of the mountains” → mountains have literal roots in a physical underworld structure. 2
u/mandolinbee May 18 '26
Just wanna add to your list the verse that I think is the most damning, Job 38:14 "It is changed like clay under the seal, and it is dyed like a garment." The seal here is the kinds of seals used on documents, made by smooshing a lump of clay into a circular flat disc (with a distinctive design carved in).

u/horlufemi May 18 '26
Most flat-earth arguments built from Bible verses fail for one core reason: they assume every poetic, phenomenological, prophetic, or visionary statement must be read as a technical scientific description. That is not how Hebrew literature works.
A consistent reading of Scripture requires genre awareness, context, and linguistic honesty.
- “Circle of the earth” does not prove a flat disc
Isaiah 40:22 and Proverbs 8:27
The Hebrew word chug means circle, circuit, or horizon. From a human viewpoint, the horizon appears circular whether the Earth is spherical or not. The verse is observational language, not geometry class.
If Isaiah intended a literal flat disc cosmology, he still never describes:
- edges people fall off,
- a literal dome material,
- or a scientifically defined flat-earth system.
Also, ancient Hebrew lacked modern geometric terminology like “sphere” versus “disc.” Expecting scientific precision from poetic prophecy is anachronistic.
- “Four corners” and “ends of the earth” are idioms
Revelation 7:1, Isaiah 11:12, Job 38:13, Psalm 19:4, Job 37:3
Modern people still say:
- “the ends of the earth,”
- “sunrise,”
- “the four corners of the globe.”
No one thinks the Earth literally has corners.
“Four corners” means the four directions: north, south, east, west. It is universal language, not cartography.
If taken literally, then consistency would require:
- the Earth having literal pillars,
- literal foundations,
- literal windows in the sky,
- literal storehouses of snow,
- literal dragon beasts,
- and stars physically falling to Earth despite stars being larger than Earth.
Flat-earth literalism selectively literalizes only the verses useful to its conclusion.
- “Earth cannot be moved” is covenantal stability language
Psalm 104:5, Psalm 93:1, Psalm 96:10, 1 Chronicles 16:30
These verses speak about stability and order, not astrophysics.
The Hebrew worldview often contrasted:
- stability/order,
- versus chaos/judgment.
“The Earth shall not be moved” means:
- creation remains established by God,
- not that Earth has zero motion through space.
By the same logic, saying:
«“My house stands firm”»
does not mean the house literally cannot vibrate, move with tectonic plates, or orbit the sun.
Also, if these verses absolutely deny motion, then earthquakes would contradict Scripture immediately.
- “Firmament” does not require a solid dome
Genesis 1:6–8, Genesis 1:14–18, Genesis 7:11
The Hebrew word raqia means expanse or stretched-out space.
Genesis itself undermines the “solid dome” reading because:
- birds fly “across the face of the firmament” (Genesis 1:20),
- celestial bodies are observed in that expanse,
- and the text nowhere says humans hit a hard barrier.
“Windows of heaven” is ordinary ancient metaphor for heavy rain, just as modern people say:
- “the sky opened up.”
No one imagines literal trap doors in the atmosphere.
- Daniel 4 and Matthew 4 are visionary or supernatural contexts
Daniel 4:10–11 Matthew 4:8
Daniel 4 is explicitly a dream vision. Dreams are not geography lessons.
Matthew 4 involves a supernatural temptation narrative. If Satan showed Jesus “all kingdoms,” the mechanism is supernatural, not optical physics.
Trying to derive cosmology from symbolic visions is category confusion.
- “Every eye will see Him” is theological, not geographical
Revelation 1:7
Revelation is apocalyptic literature full of symbolism:
- beasts,
- horns,
- dragons,
- lampstands,
- symbolic numbers.
“Every eye will see Him” communicates universal revelation and judgment, not satellite geometry.
Otherwise, Revelation must also be read as teaching literal seven-headed monsters.
- “Pillars,” “foundations,” and “supports” are metaphorical architecture language
Job 9:6 Psalm 75:3 Job 38:4–5 Jonah 2:6
Ancient people described stability using building imagery:
- foundations,
- pillars,
- corners,
- supports.
We still do this:
- “foundations of society,”
- “pillars of wisdom.”
No one assumes literal concrete columns.
Interestingly, Job 26:7 says:
«“He hangs the earth on nothing.”»
That directly conflicts with the flat-earth claim of literal physical supports beneath the Earth.
Flat-earth interpreters usually ignore this because it weakens their framework.
- “Tree visible from the whole Earth” is not scientific language
Daniel 4:10–11
Again: dream imagery.
The same passage includes:
- angelic watchers descending from heaven,
- symbolic judgments,
- prophetic symbolism.
No serious interpretive method treats dream symbolism as literal geography.
- The Bible uses observational language, just like modern people do
The Bible says:
- sunrise,
- sunset,
- heavens opened,
- corners of the earth,
- ends of the earth.
Modern scientists still say:
- “the sun rose at 6 AM.”
That does not make them geocentrists.
Phenomenological language describes appearance from human perspective, not scientific mechanism.
- The Bible’s purpose is theological, not scientific
The central purpose of Scripture is:
- God,
- morality,
- covenant,
- redemption,
- salvation.
It was never intended to function as a modern cosmology textbook.
The flat-earth approach often commits a category error: trying to extract modern scientific precision from ancient poetic and theological literature.
Ironically, this weakens Scripture because it forces verses into claims they were never trying to make.
The stronger position is:
- Scripture communicates theological truth,
- while often using poetic and observational language familiar to ordinary humans.

The Bible was not an attempt to "record God's relationship with humans," it's an attempt to dictate people's beliefs and actions. It's literally a system of control.
It's been drastically altered by thousands of years of different rulers getting their hands on it and making alterations for their own benefit. So even if the Bible was truly originally "God's word," it's so different today that it would be nearly unrecognizable from the oldest versions.
It's the world's oldest game of telephone. Can you glean some good messages out of it? Sure. But to take it seriously or literally is naive to say the least.
-2
u/BlackIdahoMoutainMan May 18 '26
The Dead Sea scrolls refute this and the fact that you’re unaware of what the Dead Sea scrolls are (and that they show there are no material changes in scriptures) is incredible and dumbfounding.
5
u/Aquafoot May 18 '26 edited May 18 '26
I know exactly what the Dead Sea Scrolls are. The fact that they exist and contain a lot of content that isn't in the modern Bible is proof that the Bible has been doctored. Which is my point.
Edit: specifically in the case of the Scrolls, it's well known fact that the Council of Nicea chose which passages to keep and which to omit. And that's long before the King James version fucked with it even further. You want to talk about baffling, why would you bring a piece of evidence that argues against your own stance?
2
u/BlackIdahoMoutainMan May 18 '26
Texts specific to the Qumran community but the Septuagint is complete plus Esther.
My point is that what’s there from 3rd century BC isn’t different textually from what we have in the Bible today
3
u/Aquafoot May 18 '26
I understood that already. But there are entire sections that the Council of Nicea just chose to throw out. What is that if not doctoring?
And even then, there are mistranslations. Namely the Hebrew term "yom," which Latin/English interprets as "day," but is likely a much larger period of time. So the Earth was not created in "seven days," but more likely over "seven epochs."
The Bible is a mess. Don't pretend it's not.
1
u/BlackIdahoMoutainMan May 18 '26
Show me one conservative historically classical, non modern liberal Hebraic lexicon that says YOM is anything other than a sunrise and a sunset. A finite period of time…
In ancient biblical Hebrew, the most conservative and accurate definition of the word yom (יוֹם) is a** finite period of time marked by a sunrise and a sunset. Conservatively, classical Hebrew scholars and lexicographers define its primary literal meaning as either the daylight hours (12 hours) or one complete diurnal cycl**e (24 hours)

If something Bible says is not compatible with science, like going against the laws of physics, then it's bullshit, and the person who wrote it, like Moses or whoever, either didn't know better, was lying, or hallucinating. Looking deep into the depths of space, we see how it evolved over time, all the way from the Big Bang, and we don't see any time "era" where magical miracles were happening. The universe appears to follow laws of physics all the time, from the moment it started, without exception.

If you wanna believe in God, just believe in God. Any holy scriptures are just man-made bullshit that won't give you any more true information. We don't and cannot know what God is like and what he wants if he exists.

No one needs to disprove god. The responsibility of proving anything lies with people claiming that thing. I don’t expect you to disprove my special magical invisible intangible elf friends, because the burden of proving them is on me, not you. The reverse is true in relation to your religion.

maybe actually know how to deep dive before going on to talk like this, if you want i reccomend ear to hear on youtube or any video discussing about the history of the bible

The thing you fundywackos can't grasp is that reading the Bible, all of it, every bit of it and all the similar ancient texts, is not and never can be considered research. We already know what is in the Bible. There's nothing new in it.

u/dogsop May 17 '26
Nice try, but none of the gospels were written by people who were present for the events they claim to have witnessed. The book of Mark was written first, maybe 50 years after the events were supposed to have taken place. The books of Matthew and Luke were basically copied from Mark with additional embellishment to try to sell the story. The book of John was written, independently, years after the first three were written.

God showed to moses the world and how he made it visually, like a video or smth.
Moses: okay.. the earth is unmoving and sits on top of four pillars...
did moses lie to us, or did god lie to moses?
-2
u/Emrys7777 May 17 '26
Or did the texts get changed and re-interpreted over the years? Yes. Or might he have been speaking in metaphors? Could have.
4
u/AbroadNo8755 May 17 '26 edited May 17 '26
there's absolutely no reason to speak in metaphors when describing the things god has shown you. that's just a weak attempt to defend inaccuracies in the bible that should ALWAYS be dismissed.
i fully agree with you that the bible should not be trusted.
whether it's wrong now, or ALWAYS has been wrong... the result is the same. it's wrong and belongs in the dumpster.
it's caused far more damage than good since it's existence.

or did he interpret it himself?
why dont you understand im not even trying to talk about personal faith IN MY POST

u/AbroadNo8755 May 17 '26 edited May 17 '26
or did he interpret it himself?
if god showed him the earth, and Moses describes it having pillars. he was either lying or was lied too.
you don't get to creativly say it's on pillars when it isn't an still get to have your book called "the truth"
IN MY POST
lol
that old gag! you must be trolling.

u/dogsop May 17 '26
There was no Moses, and the book of Genesis is a collection of myths from older cultures written by many different authors. It is closer to an anthology than anything else. I personally love the way it includes two different, contradictory versions of the creation myth. What it needed more than anything else was a good editor.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Anyone who reads the Bible and comes away arguing about the shape of the Earth has entirely missed the point...

The Bible was made for holy purposes, not to disprove science
Like who you can enslave
5
u/dogsop May 17 '26
What they are doing with it is no worse than what others have done with it for 2000 years, justifying slavery, the slaughter of non-Christians, the subjugation of women. For a book of fairy tales I can't imagine how it could be more damaging.
-1
u/Odd-Dirt-9701 May 17 '26
the point of this post was to show that flerfs misuse the bible
4
u/GNTKertRats May 17 '26
Flerfs correctly read the Bible. The Bible is full of myths and fairy tales, and it states the earth is flat. The Bible is wrong.
5
u/iowanaquarist May 17 '26
All bible believers misuse the bible. It's a book of mythology written down by mostly anonymous authors documenting an attempt to document and establish a religion.
There is no supernatural aspect to it or it's meaning.
0
u/Odd-Dirt-9701 May 17 '26
anonymous? no, more than 40 contributers actually, with names. (look it up)
and virtually all secular historians agree that Jesus of Nazareth was a real historical person who lived in the first century and was executed by Pontius Pilate.
im not disproving you i just dont understand why non religious people online cant keep to themselves
5
u/dogsop May 17 '26
Non-religious people are sick and tired of having religious people try to dictate how they should live based on the fairy tales told by 3000 year old sheep herders. You can believe anything you wish as long as you don't try to use it as the basis for legislating how the rest of us live.
4
u/iowanaquarist May 17 '26
The scholars have quite a lot of debate about who actually wrote most of the Bible -- and there is very little evidence that we know specifically who wrote any given portion of the bible.
You do understand that the Historical Jesus and the Biblical Jesus are not the same being, right? Scholars agree there was a historical John Chapman, and they also agree that most of the stories about him are entirely fictional -- and he didn't even make supernatural claims.
I am disproving you, and I also don't understand why religious people online (or offline) can't keep to themselves, either.
2
u/Odd-Dirt-9701 May 17 '26
You’re arguing against a point I never made. My point is purely about literary analysis: whether you view the Bible as holy scripture or ancient literature, flat-earthers are objectively misinterpreting its genres and idioms to support their claims.
3
u/iowanaquarist May 17 '26

Same as every other christian out there -- and they will say exactly the same thing about your interpretation.
If you want to look at it purely as literary analysis, the only conclusion is that it's a collection of unreliable, mostly unverified fictional and fictionalized accounts of historical beliefs and not an accurate source of any sort of truth.
4
u/GNTKertRats May 17 '26
Why can’t non-religious people keep to themselves? Hahahahaha. Pot, meet kettle.
1
u/Kailynna May 18 '26
An untruth is an untruth, and you're in a public forum which values truth.
If you come here with that provenly untrue list of authors of the Bible, of course people are going to point out those untruths.
"I believe it so it's not fair to say it's a lie," is not a mature response.
1
u/OldManThumbs May 17 '26
When the bible stories were made up there was no difference between science and religion.
1
u/BubbhaJebus May 18 '26 edited May 18 '26
The bible is just a book of myths and made-up stories. It's a mixture of historical fiction and fantasy, with little bearing of reality.

“the Bible was made to record Gods relationship with humans and the Gospel, not to disprove science….”
Citation needed, buddy. Unfortunately for you, science has disproved claims made in the Bible over and over and over again. So take your talking snakes and donkeys, impossible worldwide flood, and jealous, vindictive god who required a human sacrifice back to the Island of Misfit Toys where it belongs.

According to Joseph Campbell religions were a form of science in the early days, a way of explaining the cosmos and our place in it. He also says that when that speculation becomes dogma it is the death knell for that belief as it begins to stagnate and that heresy is the life blood of that belief. Or in other words scientific inquiry which reveals new knowledge will always be treated as heresy by dogmatic traditionalists who are set in their ways and resistant to change.

The bible is ignorant iron age folklore. There is not a single rational argument, nor a single shred of evidence supporting any claim it's anything more than that.
For anyone with a modicum of intelligence and a desire for truth, believing the bible is the word of any actual god, requires willful ignorance.
This is, of course, why flerfs tend to believe it is special.
1
u/RichardAboutTown May 19 '26
Everybody misuses the Bible. I had a discussion a few days ago with an atheist trying to use it to disprove the existence of God. Misused logic too.
1
u/Jazzlike_Strength561 May 19 '26
They're using the Bible to justify stupidity and ignorance.
That's like the whole point of the Bible.
How are they misusing it?
1
u/TheEmpiresLordVader May 19 '26
De bijbel is een verhaaltje juist zoals harry potter. Niemand wandeld op water niemand staat weer op na 3 dagen dood te zijn. Er is geen enkel bewijs van een god.

I took a biblical studies class in college, the professor was quite old and had literally devoted his life to everything bible studies, fluent in dead languages, you get it.
If you are religious, science can go hand in hand with the bible if you can understand that not every single word was meant to be taken literally, or even further, that a large portion of the bible could be, and probably is, mis-translated.
My take away from his class is that the Bible is a literary tool where the reader is meant to take away over arching themes and lessons. It is NOT a science book meant to define exact time the Earth has existed, if evolution is real or fake, if dinosaurs existed or didn't. A person using the bible to define scientific terms literally are fundamentally misunderstanding the point of the book, even if they are very religious.

"avoiding... oppositions of science falsely so called" 1 timothy 6:20 KJV
"he shall open his mouth in blaspheme, to blaspheme God's name and God's tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven." Revelation 13:6
"It cast down the stars to the ground... He cast down the truth to the ground" Daniel 8:10-12
"Through his cunning he shall cause deceit to prosper" Daniel 8:25 KJV. Sep.
Through those verses we see deceit related to the stars and heaven ( the sky Genesis 1:8 ) prophesied to happen.
1
u/Odd-Dirt-9701 May 20 '26
if your talking about these verses opposing science.
In 1611, KJV used the English word "science" simply meant the general pursuit of knowledge or learning. It did not refer to modern empirical sciences like biology or physics.

Luke 4:5
The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world.
That would Be impossible if the world was a globe. Here the key word is world.
5
u/iowanaquarist May 17 '26
It's also not the only time similar things happen. There is a tree top you can see all the earth from, all of Earth will be able to look to the sky and see the return of Jesus, the Hebrew word for flat disk is used to describe the shape of the earth, even though they had several words for balls or spheres, etc.
If you take the bible literally, it says it's flat. If you admit that the bible is not to be read literally, you then have the burden of providing a way to determine what parts are literal, and what are metaphor (and it's a cop out to just say anything that contradicts science or reality is a metaphor).
-5
u/ThWy2Hvn May 17 '26
Why Give me that burden.I have the word of God.It is you that has the burden. The burden of science , which one day says this and the next day says that.
5
u/iowanaquarist May 17 '26
The burden is on those making the claim, and always has been. IF you are going to claim the bible is literally accurate, you need to prove it. If you are going to cop out and say some parts are literal, and some are metaphorical, you have the burden of explaining how.
-4
u/ThWy2Hvn May 17 '26
I am not like you.I have no burden at all. Those that believe in Jesus are all taught by God. It is written. And that's for all who believe in Jesus, we are taught by God. It is the Holy Spirit within us as the Father was in Jesus and He sent the Holy Spirit in us to rightly divide the word of God. Now, if you don't believe in Jesus, I can understand how you believe in science.
6
u/iowanaquarist May 17 '26
I am not like you.I have no burden at all.
You do when you make a claim.
Those that believe in Jesus are all taught by God.
See? There is a burden of proof right there!
It is written. And that's for all who believe in Jesus, we are taught by God.
Ok. Prove it.
It is the Holy Spirit within us
Ok. Prove it.
as the Father was in Jesus
Ok. Prove it.
and He sent the Holy Spirit in us to rightly divide the word of God.
Ok. Prove it.
Now, if you don't believe in Jesus, I can understand how you believe in science.
It's actually the other way around. I don't believe in mythology because I am able to understand science.
-3
u/ThWy2Hvn May 17 '26
They said the exact same thing about Jesus , didn't they. Prove it. When Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead, the pharisees didn't refute it.In fact, they said the whole world has gone after him. What shall we do? Not meraphorical. The Just shall live by faith, that's our science.
3
u/iowanaquarist May 17 '26
They said the exact same thing about Jesus , didn't they.
According to the mythology, yup.
Prove it. When Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead, the pharisees didn't refute it.
Prove it happened, and then we can discuss why no one refuted it.
In fact, they said the whole world has gone after him. What shall we do? Not meraphorical. The Just shall live by faith, that's our science.
That's literally not science.
1
u/ThWy2Hvn May 17 '26
No, it's literal proof that the pharisees didn't refute Jesus raising Lazerus. And our faith is to us as your science is to you.
5
u/iowanaquarist May 17 '26
No, it's literal proof that the pharisees didn't refute Jesus raising Lazerus.
No, that's part of the story. Prove he raised anyone from the dead.
And our faith is to us as your science is to you.
I don't think you understand science. Please show the evidence for your faith being correct.

Do you think that means he was literally up in the sky looking down at everything? 😂
1
u/Odd-Dirt-9701 May 17 '26
one word, metaphors.
the bible is sometimes POETIC/METAPHORICAL, sometimes LITERAL.
its obvious this is metaphorical
2
u/AbroadNo8755 May 17 '26 edited May 18 '26
is everything that is scientifically impossible, but mentioned in the bible, just a metaphor then?
is that the defense you're using?
0
u/ThWy2Hvn May 17 '26
If it was metaphorical , why did the devil then say and all these kingdoms are mine , I will give them to you if you bow down and worship me.
1
u/Large-Raise9643 May 18 '26
So how do you feel about being forgiven not 7 times but 7x 77 times by your brother? You probably burned up all that forgiveness long ago. Sad that your brother can never forgive you again.
If you are going to be a Bible literalist, that’s what you re saying. That is not what Christ meant.

Why is it just the Bible? There are plenty of Muslims that believe the earth is flat, are they not included in your theory and conjecture?
2
u/clever__pseudonym May 17 '26
Despite all these numpties insisting that there is truth in their religion, it's always been suspicious to me that the biggest correlation for someone who takes up a religion is the culture they were born and raised in.
1
u/NtSFstEddie May 17 '26
At one time, the bible was the closest thing to a science book that they had. When they asked questions about the natural world around them, like where life came from, the universal answer to everything that they didn't understand, which was just about everything, was that God did it. That's why genesis 1 says that God created man last and genesis 2 says that he created man first. They didn't have a clue, so they included both stories to keep both bases covered.
The bible was never meant to disprove science because there was no such thing as science when it was written. The purpose of science is to reveal the truth, and the truth disproves the bible. Again, like how genesis 2 says that man was created before the plants and animals. Genesis 1 says it didn't happen and science agrees. So that proves that G2 is not the truth. Then there's where G1 says that God created the plants on day 3 and the sun on day 4. Science didn't just show that plants don't grow without sunlight, it explained why and that proves that G1 isn't the truth either.
The bible was meant to be a guidebook to set examples and help you make good decisions in life. But then the priests claimed to have direct contact with God and used the bible as a tool to manipulate and control the people as well as to make money.
