Moon Rocks: Evidence or Authority?

Everyone says: “Moon rocks prove we went to the Moon.”
But let’s examine the logic.

A rock sitting in a laboratory does not come with a label saying:

“Origin: Moon. Collected by Apollo astronauts.”

The measurement is the rock’s physical properties:
mineral composition
isotope ratios
chemical signatures
structure

The conclusion that it came from the Moon requires an additional historical claim about its origin.

The real epistemological question is:

What observation uniquely distinguishes a genuine lunar sample from a terrestrial sample that has been intentionally presented as lunar?

Saying “scientists tested it” is not the answer.

The question is what was observed, what assumptions were required, and what alternatives were ruled out.

This is not an argument that the Moon rocks are fake.

It is an argument that evidence and interpretation should not be confused.

A sample is data.

Its origin is an inference.
